I have read two more books on this topic but found this one to be more to the point and a good resource to get started on the right foot. Not very informative. Much of the information is readily available via any internet search. Couple that with the repetitive information, typos and grammar mistakes makes this a poor purchase.

I purchased the kindle version. The book offered a lot of insight to a number of aspects in this trade. The kindle version often repeated segments of the previous page for some reason making it a little frustrating reading it.

I bought this book more than a decade ago. I was finding my first job. A career advisor said "read a book on negotiating salaries. It makes every minute of a professional interview worth $1000." Who doesn't want to make a grand a minute?At first, even walking seemed intimidating, let alone haggling. But over the first three years of my career I read this book 3 times. It's a masterclass in negotiation. The audio book is good too, but different. I attribute 15% of my income for the last decade to learning key lessons from this book. I've suggested it to many friends, but most don't have the time to read hundreds of pages for a job interview. Who's smarter, the person who saves 10 hours on a $10 book, or the one who spends that time and money to learn how to free up 300 hours of a 2080-hour work year, by increasing his pay rate?I have given up on insisting that friends and family learn to negotiate. But I had to write this review to thank Roger Dawson. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for life.

Imagine sitting across from someone who says:"I only have $5,000, that's all I have.""You've got to do better than that.""You've got to do MUCH better than that.""I don't have much time. What have you got?""What if I doubled/tripled/etc my order?"I asked that question in a review I wrote about a book that didn't have answers for how to respond. I mentioned in that review that Dawson's "Power Negotiating" had the answers. So I thought it was about time to post this in a review for THE book. Knowing how to negotiate well is a life skill that could help us in so many ways. It's just not about buying cars or houses, or discussing salary, or selling or buying a product. It's life. It's your toddler asking for a cookie; it's your teenage daughter asking for new luggage and spending money (Dawson provides personal examples). Having good negotiation skills is an essential life skill, and I know of no better book on the topic than Dawson's. The book drags a bit in the chapters on mediation, arbitration, and conflict resolution. But the chapters on the negotiation gambits -- beginning, middle, and ending -- is everything you need to know. He also talks about unethical gambits -- great info so you are aware when others try it on you. I have this book on my shelf for quick reference.

I listened to the audio book version of this years ago. This book is a classic on negotiations. Many books talk about WIN WIN negotiating. The problem is that's like going into an MMA match knowing nothing more than Marquis de Queensbury rules boxing. It puts you at a negotiating disadvantage when you're up against someone who simply doesn't care about WIN WIN. This books teaches you some of the basic techniques and maneuvers that people use so that you're prepared for the negotiations.

The secret of getting what you want is all about negotiation. The better negotiator you are the better chances you have at a positive outcome. Some people seem to be born with the ability to negotiate but that doesn't mean that others can learn the skills that will improve their abilities. This book is thus an excellent resources for those who want to under the practicalities and winning strategies behind successful negotiation.For those who are not born negotiators I think that it will take a few readings of this book to implement all the strategies covered. To improve any skill takes practice and this book gives you the guidance on the techniques to practice. Conversely, the book will also help you understand when these techniques are being implemented by opponents, which again will certainly give you a leg up.The book is easy to read, comprehensive and most important enjoyable. If you want to improve your negotiating skills with practical tips and strategies then this book is certainly worthwhile. However, given the breath of material covered it is probably something that you are going to need to keep studying to assimilate all the techniques outlined by the author.

Everyone should read this book, because it would make life simply better by helping to deal better with conflict.This is one of the best if not the best book on negotiating I have read. It's a book that I would be reviewing from time to time. Using the techniques, tools and skills I have learnt to make win win situations for my business and life. It can do the same for you.The book you don't read, won't help. Invest in this book today, you will be glad you did. You certainly don't want be less skilled negotiator in a business deal.Go negotiate with power!

This is the third time I purchase this material and currently have it on book and Kindle versions. I first heard the program "Secrets of Power Negotiating: Inside Secrets from a Master Negotiator" by Roger Dawson over a decade ago on cassette format. It really opened my eyes about what others were doing to me every day. Once I understood it then, I could respond more appropriately and could also use the same approach to accomplish win-win results myself. Before being aware of this material I thought that there wouldn't be anything new in it since I was already in sales for another 10 years and had read many books about the subject. Not so, this material is not covered on common sales or negotiating books as far as I know. I'm sure it is covered somewhere because I see it being used in all high level negotiations being it political, Union, International or even in public service. It doesn't matter if we negotiate with others or if we sale anything or not. Being aware of the material covered on this book is a must for everyone who wants to stay ahead of the masses. Regardless of your age, student or professional, I believe this book will change your view of the world and perhaps even your future outcome.

Very powerful. Only a handful of chapters in and i feel i have grown much in a short time and see things in my everyday worklife from a different elevated, more educated perspective. highly reccommend for any person who works a job where you sell , anything.

It is a sprial bound book. I barely, if at all, used this book for class. The material it covers can be useful, but the book is not that good. Maybe that I associate the uselessness of this course with the book, but this is one course book I wish I had not bought. Depending on your professor you might have to buy it to complete book assignments specifically from the book. My professor said they were going to do that, and then never did. So...this is really a 50/50 chance and decision on your part.

great book that helped me throughout the semester. I wish the rental fee was a little longer because my course is not over yet

The picture gives you the perception tha book is bigger. The actual size is pocket format and I had hard time reading it. I do not like how it is organized. It was one of my books for grad school communication class but I think there are much better books out there.

This book is good and new. Delivery is also well. Thank you very much.

This is a different approach to depression. Too often, our focus has been on the DSM-IV approach, or to the treatment of depression using selective seratonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac and Paxil. Very rarely does somebody, let alone a respected psychoanalyst, attempt to explain what it actually *feels* like to experience major depression. This is a writing that gives meaning to depression, and I feel that it helps people and their families understand the experience of depression.The process of all modalities of psychotherapy involves communication, a dialogue between the therapist and the client. This process draws the client out and is an essential factor in the care of the client. Kristeva emphasizes the "antidepressant qualities of psychoanalysis." While acknowledging the utility of antidepressants in psychotherapy, the function of the linguistic component seeks to emphasize the meaning of the "inconsolable loss" experienced by the depressed patient. To symbolically illustrate the sensation of depression, Kristeva uses great sensativity in drawing on the poetry of Gerard de Nerval, the novels of Doestoyevsky, and Hans Holbein's picture "Dead Christ.""Dark Sun" had meaning to me because of its emphasis on the *individual* and how he or she feels. We must always emphasize the dignity of the individual in dealing with the depressed.

And she writes beautifully about depression and artists. Not an easy book but an important one. Read it for enlightenment not entertainment.

Kristeva is so good discussing some of my own issues that she ALMOST makes me take psychoanalysis seriously

Kristeva's is definitely worth a read. While staking a claim for the salubrious effects of psychoanalysis, the author freshly details art's engagement with melancholy and depression. The first chapter or two will make rough going for the reader who is not amused by the lexicon of psychoanalysis. But even readers with a literary intolerance of that sort will find the third chapter on feminine depression sensitively written and thoughtfully invested with human presence. The chapters on art and artists with melancholia make generally excellent reading. The most brief of the chapters, "Beauty: The Depressive Other's Realm," provides a soaring inauguration of the author's poetic and psychoanalytic approaches to the madness and melancholia among Durer, Nerval, Dostoevsky, and Duras. The chapter on Duras might not bear a discussion of an author familiar to American readers but it is worth reading because it alone of the chapters explicity raises questions concerning politics, expectations, madness and depression. The author investigates the sites she has chosen with great sensitivity and radiant intellect. Scattered clouds will be apparent to those who find psychoanalysis an unsatisfying or capricious methodology of investigation.

In much the same way that Philippe Aries took the subject of childhood and illuminated it for all time in "Centuries of Childhood," fellow French writer (although Bulgarian-born) and Lacanian psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva examines depression and melancholia. She comes at it from various angles and filters: fine arts, literature, history, philosophy, religion, and of course psychology. She posits psychoanalysis as a (really THE) 'counterdepressant' -- convincingly. This is great highbrow stuff: chapters with titles like"Beauty, the Depressive's Other Realm," and "Life and Death of Speech." Death, suicide, the inevitable gloom resulting from loss of maternal, later erotic, love; all are insightfully discussed -- even rather tenderly. If you're depressed BLACK SUN won't make you more so -- and if you're feeling okay to begin with, it's a terrific scholarly study.

Her purpose is to study this world and write about it in such a manner that the reader can feel the excitement of a buyer as they are feeling the wet dew on their shoes, still dark outside, coffee cup in one hand, flashlight in other hand, working , looking for the next item that will be part of their bread and butter. This is part of the world of us crazy people who sell and buy at flea markets, antique shows.The author brings to light the endless hours of research it takes to hopefully educate ourselves so we don't buy a reproduction, or miss a flaw that makes a piece worthless and, how to tell the real from the fake, , keeping up with what is selling for top dollar today, because tomorrow it may plummet in value and you are left holding an item until its value swings up again, and praying all the while, that the value on the item goes up again in your lifetime.Many of those who love this business and would rather do this than anything else are true lovers of the artistry that goes in to these old pieces. You will not find the kind of quality of material and craftsmanship in todays furniture, lamps, books , or anything else. We will by a piece of finely crafted 19th century silver for an amount we may or may not recover rather than see it go to the buyer who melts down these one of a kind pieces for the value of the silver content. I think I was expecting a bit less narrative and more product/item descriptions and advice in this book. Instead, what I got was even better! This book is a treasure trove wrapped in a fascinating life story. Maureen Stanton immersed herself in the world of the "picker" with zeal making friends along the way.Through the use of aliases Stanton expertly tells the story of veteran antique/collectible seller/picker, Curt Avery, whom she has followed for years, watching him as he has climbed the ranks from low-level rookie to highly knowledgeable antique dealer pushing for the big leagues. A refreshing change, Avery is as free with his advice and expert knowledge as he is with his inexperience and what he doesn't know! Instead of "fake it 'till you make it" Curt lets Maureen know when he has made mistakes and when he doesn't know something so the reader can learn from that as well.Taking us on a page turning journey traveling from show to show filled with that specific product knowledge that I was seeking we go along with Avery and Stanton with small side trips to visit other experts. I received more than my fill of expected item knowledge - MY BOOK IS CHOCK FULL OF POST IT NOTES, HIGHLIGHTS, AND UNDERLINING! I can't put the book down... what show will we go to next, will Curt decide to go to a high-end show, if so does he do well? Stanton does a great job drawing the reader into Curt's story so that we can learn from this quirky, likable expert.Killer Stuff and Tons of Money is a great, knowledge-packed read that is worth the price.

Such an honest and funny collection of thoughts and anecdotes on motherhood. Each chapter was the perfect length to read over lunch, or waiting at an appointment, and each was extremely entertaining. I've read some of Whitney's romantic comedies, but I have to say this book is my favorite. I laughed out loud quite a few times, in particular when her mother finds herself on a motorized scooter at Costco. No spoilers, so I'll say no more. So much good stuff here, though. Hopefully Whitney writes another one of these in ten years or so, on the joys of the teenage years!

I thoroughly enjoyed Whitney Dineen's #5Stars romcom She Sins at Midnight which impressed me with its creativity, unique story line andflirtatious charm. Â I loved this book so much I had to read it twice, just to appreciate every nuance. Â Ms. Dineen knows how to write an totally engaging and enveloping story! Â When I heard she had a brand new book filled with real-life motherhood essays, I knew that I had to try it. Â As a new fan (from reading She Sins), I've followed her author blog periodically, and her mom humor thereÂ is always on point: snarky, ironic, self-deprecating, andÂ hilarious. Â Motherhood Martyrdom & Costco Runs is a collection of smart, sassy, and slightly contained madnessÂ essays about the joy/stressfulness/and funny, humorous events that enliven every parent's life. Â Ms. Dineen brings you directly into the unvarnished and true-stranger-than-fiction trenches of everyday, chaotic, parenthood life, filled with misadventures, unique parenting challenges Â (bathroom yodeling class, anyone?), and throughout, infused with love, warmth, and of course, snarky humor (all amidst the backdrop of Costco)!For any parent who wants to commiserate with someone on the vagaries and strangeness of parenting, bring this book with you into your 5 min. bathroom break from the kids. With Motherhood Martyrdom and Costco Runs, Whitney Dineen has given us a beautiful, comical, and often poignant look into what raising children is really like. I found myself laughing and shedding a tear or two as I devoured the pages of this fantastic book. I absolutely adored it. And now Iâ€™m off to renew my membership at Costco.

I loved this book! Whitney Dineen describes things in such detail that you can truly see the situations unfold as you read about them. This book is so relatable to me as I swear I've experienced some of the exact same things since I became a mother. I laughed out loud on so many of the pages! I love that the author tells things like they are, doesn't try to make things pretty. Motherhood is a messy, chaotic, loving, nerve racking, emotional, hug filled party that lasts until the very end. This is a must read for moms everywhere!

Great summer read. Fast moving, funny, and heart warming. Being a Mom isn't for cowards, but it is easier with a fully developed sense of humor.Whitney Dineen has that in spades. Loved the book!

I really enjoyed this book!The story is well build and the characters are great. I would recommend reading the previous book to get a the full picture, but you can still understand without reading them.It's also nice to have the two bonus stories, since they feature characters present in the main book.I'm looking forward to what's next.I received and advance copy of the book, but also decided to purchased it to support the author.

I love this series. I can't wait for the next book. The world this author has created is incredible. The characters are fascinating in every way. And the storylines are intriguing. I HIGHLY recommend this book and this series.

Really nice story, not as predictable as I thought

Well written. Keeps your interest and difficult to put down. I thoroughly enjoyed the series.

Where do I even begin? This is book five in this amazing series, and I know I say it with every book, but this is my absolute favorite! Uvim and Milly just struck a chord with me. Their romance is breathtakingly beautiful. They both have backgrounds that make them broken, but together they heal and come together in such a way that I got tears in my eyes. There is more to this story than the beautiful romance, though. There is the danger and action that are part of this series as a whole. There are twists and turns that keep you turning the pages faster and faster. There are also characters from previous books that make appearances, which I absolutely love, and passion. So much passion! This is an incredible love story that will make you melt and no one should miss it.

Molly has lived her life in fear of losing control since she got away from her parents. She doesn't believe that she can have a relationship or fall in love because then she wouldn't be able to be in control anymore. Milly has volunteered to help guard the cell phone that the Mer can use to contact her sister.Uvim has come to surface in order to contact Queen Zara about a possible attack by hunters on their home. Before he reached the phone a loud air horn goes off in his face and damages his inner balance and he falls and blacks out.Milly rescues him. He senses something is happening but he is not sure what it is. As he starts to heal he realizes that Milly is his bride but he thinks he is unworthy. He also feels that he must do his duty to his queen.This books shows a group of humans who will do anything and go to any extent to get rid of the Mer.This book has quite a bit of excitement in it. There were times when Milly got on my nerves at the beginning but she finally grew into a more confident person. I liked that we were introduced to two more queens in this book and two more warriors found their happy ever after.

Milly and Uvim's romance just reaches inside the heart and gives gentle, inspiring squeezes, making it nearly IMPOSSIBLE not to love it! Add in a lovable octopus and you have something extra special. And lets not forget the extra little surprises at the end fans will get all gooey over. Its unforgettable! I loved Uvim and Milly's romance. There is a lot going on emotionally in this book. From Uvim's guilt from past mistakes to Milly's fears and insecurities due to her history. Add in a storyline that deals with intolerance and fear and you have a book that melts your heart and makes you think. Uvim's devotion and kindness to Milly was so sweet and watching Uvim's love bring out Milly's inner fire and confidence was just beautiful. These two were perfect mates. I loved how each another's love made them grow into who they were always meant to be. There is drama, danger, action, twists, surprises, cameo appearances, passion and romance. Everything has been expertly crafted into a wonderful read. Also included are two bonus shorts. These are inside looks into the other two couples that form up in this book. I am voluntarily posting a truthful review.
