From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—This follow-up to Morris Award finalist Because You'll Never Meet Me picks up the story of pen pals Ollie and Moritz right where the previous novel left off. Separated by an ocean—and by unusual health conditions that could threaten both of their lives should they ever meet—the teenage boys continue to exchange letters as they encounter new challenges and uncover more secrets about the laboratory where they spent time as children. For the first time in his life, Ollie has left his isolated cabin in the woods to join his doctor on a road trip to visit other experimental "Blunderkids" from the lab. Meanwhile, Moritz is adjusting to life at a new school as well as a burgeoning relationship with fellow student Owen, who is deaf. As in the first book, the strength of the tale lies in the unique bond between Ollie and Moritz, both of whom are forced to confront their limitations and face their fears about their relative places in the world. The boys' voices remain distinct, and the dual narration once again helps to build tension, though the story loses some of the freshness and novelty of the first one. More firmly rooted in science fiction, the tale also ventures toward the allegorical, which feels a bit heavy-handed at times, and the ending leaves loose a few threads that beg for a third installment. VERDICT Fans of the first volume will likely enjoy reading this new chapter in Ollie's and Moritz's lives.—Lauren Strohecker, McKinley Elementary School, Elkins Park, PA

"Unforgettable and distinct voices . . . A fantastic novel that will be especially resonant for readers who struggle with being or feeling outside of 'normal.'" - starred review, Booklist"This brilliant follow-up to a clever and unexpected novel does exactly what it should in keeping the same epistolary format but taking these two unforgettable characters way out of their comfort zones and toward lives that are lived rather than waited out, and the result is powerful stuff indeed." - starred review, BCCB"Ollie and Moritz continue to be compelling characters, struggling to figure out how to use their talents while living within their limitations. In many ways, they are no different than most teens, just a few steps further along the continuum." - VOYA"Part mad science, part convincing portrayal of the volatile, resilient nature of friendship and grief--and that, as Ollie says, is not science fiction." - Kirkus Reviews"The strength of the tale lies in the unique bond between Ollie and Moritz, both of whom are forced to confront their limitations and face their fears about their relative places in the world . . . Fans of the first volume will likely enjoy reading this new chapter in Ollie’s and Moritz’s lives." - School Library Journal"The pacing is impeccable, as letters move from sunniness (Oliver) and bemused distance (Moritz) to both writers exploring their darkest fears, experiences, and worries for their futures." - starred review, BCCB on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"A witty, unusual take on friendship and parlaying weakness into power." - Kirkus Reviews on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"Ollie and Moritz are memorable characters with engaging and often humorous voices. . . A quirky, almost whimsical feel even as Thomas grounds it in heartfelt and often painful emotion." - SLJ on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"The two may be eccentric outcasts, but their conflicts, heartbreak, and eventual bond form a relatable and engaging narrative." - Publishers Weekly on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"It’s the distinct, deeply memorable voices of Ollie and Moritz that make this novel an affecting page-turner." - Horn Book Magazine on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME

This is such an exciting mix of genres. It's like realistic sci-fi, if that makes sense. We follow the two main characters, who have fantastical problems, as they try to make their way into the world. Imagine Eleven from Stranger Things trying to go to high school. It's told through letters the two write to each other, and is a story of a strongly-bonded friendship. It would help if you read the previous book though I don't think it's entirely necessary.

I have been waiting not-too-patiently for this sequel to Because You'll Never Meet Me. I loved the friendship between Ollie and Moritz and couldn't wait to see where their adventures took them. I was not disappointed - the book picks right up and sucks you into their world where you cheer for them, roll your eyes at them, or want to hug them as they help each other grow up through their letters. The new characters we meet are well-written and full of depth. I've been recommending these books to everyone I know.

The second in a fantastic epistolary series. The book follows the previous Moritz and Ollie with visits from additional Blunderkids. The book is built on weird science and long-distance friendships, fully capturing the messy and enheartening nature of both. I cannot say enough good things about it.(Full disclosure, I know Leah personally. She is a huge dork.)

Great read! Different plot line than a lot of stories that tend to follow roughly similar story lines. Really enjoyed it and LOVE that Leah is from northern MI!!

It arrived on time and in perfect condition. I would recommend. Nice price too.

Love it.

The ending left a big detail open so I'm wondering if there will be a third book in the series.I still love the characters and I really liked the new ones Molly and Arthur. One thing I wish there was more of was Ollie visiting more Blunderkinder. He only met two and from the description I was expecting something more. Another thing I missed was Moritz's dad. He only had a few tiny parts in this one.Outside of that it was a solid follow-up and the ending will bring a smile to your face for sure. I wish Ollie all the best. He is the sun after all.

Thank you Netgalley and Bloomsbury publishing! Can I give this ten stars? Is that maybe a thing? GUYS this book blew me away. This is the follow up to Because you’ll never meet me which was fantastic. When it comes to books with more the one sometimes the second book ends up dragging. This did not happen.Nowhere near you had me hooked from start to finish. It still follows the letters between our favorite boys Ollie and Moritz. This installment brings us some new scenery and along with it some new characters. Author was my most favorite new character to meet he was so down to earth I just loved him so much! Molly and Klaus were just fabulous! We also meet Bridgett, Brian, and some adult characters. I loved them all! These characters brought so much to the story I couldn’t imagine Ollie and Moritz journey without them.Let’s talk plot, OH MY FREAKING LANTA, I was on a rollercoaster of emotions. First I was happy, hopeful, sad, scared, ALIVE, loving, torn to pieces because nothings right in the world, to hopeful. I would not have had it any other way. This was dare I say it even better than the first which I did not think was possible. I can begin to explain the weight this book holds in my heart now. I need more time with this characters so PLEASE say there will more because that ending. If I am being honest I finished this book and sat in my chair a cried my eyes out. I cried of sadness for a moment but mostly I cried with hope. I could live with this being the end but I hope, pray, and dream there will be more because so many questions are still open. This was a fantastic read. Everyone needs to get their hands on these books. My heart may never be the same. 5 fluffing starsFavorite Quote“I thought of you calling me good. I thought of you, just you—“

Great book that makes a compelling case for free trade.

Irwin makes international trade easy to understand.

I encourage anyone who is skeptical about the self-professed economic know-it-alls whose claims run counter to the long-established wisdom not only of Adam Smith and David Ricardo but even that of more contemporary economists like Milton Friedman or Thomas Sowell. Free Trade is a good thing - it is advantageous to each side of all trades conducted by mutually voluntary consent. I haven't read all the way though this yet but I am already pleased to see that Professor Irwin has addressed many common fallacies, misinformation and worries around that derogatory term "Globalism."I wasn't sure what to expect exactly, perhaps an assessment citing the truths and falsehoods of each anti-free trade propaganda claim. I did suspect that there would be a predominant appeal to collectivist justifications - 'better for the common good' - and so far that's in there too but moderated. In the age of Trump, where economic nationalism, protectionism and big govt economic central-planning are all just de rigeur, this is a good place to start for the collectivist-brainwashed out there, since Professor Irwin seems to be addressing their contentions more directly. However, even if you are a skeptic and want to hear the other side of the story, the one economists have been explicating for 200+ years - and protectionist sentiment was strong in their times too - this book will give you a solid education and a lot to ponder. Why not five stars? First, I rarely give anything that high of a mark, otherwise it seems meaningless. To improve this book, I would suggest to Professor Irwin to scale back the collectivist justification and place some emphasis on individual liberties - on which the United States was originally founded. It is better for the individual to obtain the best perceived value and owes nothing to anyone else, whether one trades with those of another country, state/province, region, town/city, postal code... or not. Protectionism penalizes anyone who demands the freedom of choice. It benefits some at the expense of many - Milton Friedman noted that the penalty is diffuse, it punishes all consumers. It does not encourage the consumer to buy domestic, it threatens the consumer to buy domestic or be penalized. Moreover, it punishes domestic exporters who will face retaliatory penalties in foreign markets where they are more efficient. Everyone back into their safe space hidey-holes now!Personally, I buy domestic products when they are the better value to me. I will not reward inefficiency and uncompetitive operation just because of some nebulous obligation to pay more for less because it helps my neighbor. I don't make excuses why I cannot compete and I won't accept the same from others. Protectionism is no better than cronyism, government handing out special favors to special interests. By the way, for anyone who believes the myth of the cheap wage country threat - Professor Irwin will demonstrate here how low wages=low productivity; Americans don't earn more money just for the hell of it - minus those helped by minimum wage laws, another bankrupt idea - they produce more: with superior skills, and the leverage of capital investments. Sweatshop factory wages are cheap because that is all they are worth.

This is a comprehensive look at trade. Politicians ignore the facts, and prey on the ignorance of voters. If you vote, read this.
