Passage to Juneau: A Sea and Its Meanings, by Jonathan Raban

Amazon.com Review

British-born Jonathan Raban sets out on a passage from Seattle to Juneau in a small boat that is more a waterborne writing den, and as usual with the brilliant Raban, this journey becomes a vehicle for history and heart-stopping descriptions that will make readers want to hail him as one of the finest talents who's picked up a pen in the 20th century. The voyage through the Inside Passage from Washington's Puget Sound to Alaska churns up memories and stirs up hidden emotions and Raban dwells on many, including the death of his father and his own role of Daddy to his young daughter, Julia, left behind in Seattle. More than just a personal travelogue, however, Passage to Juneau deftly weaves in the stories of others before him--from Indians whom white men formerly greeted with baubles set afloat on logs, to Captain Vancouver, who risked mutiny on his ship when he banned visits with prostitutes, some of whom offered their services for bits of scrap metal. Pressed into every page are intimate descriptions of life at sea--the fog-shrouded coasts, the crackly radio that keeps him linked to the mainland, the salty marine air, and the fellow sailors who are likewise drawn by a life of tossing on water. While Raban successfully steers his boat to the desired port, readers ultimately discover that this insightful, talented sage is in fact emotionally in deep water and may not fully be captain of his own life. --Melissa Rossi

From Publishers Weekly

As he recounts fishing a rain jacket he'd mistaken for a corpse out of cold Pacific waters, Raban wryly confesses that "gallivanting around the world in a small boat is a continuing education in one's limitless capacity for self-delusion." Sailing up the Inland Passage, the protected waterway that serves as a great nautical freeway between Puget Sound and Alaska, Raban (British expat and chronicler of the American experience) sounds its history in a clever, always curious, yet increasingly morose voice. It's a lengthy journey over vast territory, and Raban struggles to maintain a streamlined narrative. He finds himself at turns landlocked by fog, skimming across water that is incredibly deep, cold and oddly "greasy," intrigued by the "floating junkyard" brought by the tide and anchoring at once prosperous timber and fishing communities. In his NBCC Award-winning Bad Land, Raban composed a moving portrait of desert homesteaders in Montana and North Dakota from the intimate stories of several families. Here, although his journey is his narrative vehicle, the subject is definitely Raban himself, as explorer, traveler and man. He keeps the most intimate company with ghosts: his companions include the cruel Captain George Vancouver, who mapped the coast in the 1790s; the shipwrecked poet Shelley; the Indians and settlers who peopled the landscape. He also writes of his daughter and (increasingly estranged) wife, who remain back in Seattle, and of his father, whose illness and death in England interrupt and recast Raban's journey. A compelling meditation courses beneath the surface commotion of the book as Raban seeks solace (and himself) in the movement of the sea with its deadheads, whirlpools, unpredictable tides, submerged mountains and stony shores capped with evergreen wool. First serial to the New Yorker; 9-city author tour. (Nov.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Raban weaves together several parallel life passages while sailing from Seattle to Alaska: his own solo voyage, long-past explorers of the Pacific Northwest, his father's death, and the barely-noticed unraveling of his marriage. Some dangers lurk forever deep underwater; others appear spontaneously floating on the surface. Life, like sailing, is complicated, unknowable, sometimes ominous. There's a lot of history bound up in the sailing metaphor: Raban's own as well as Captain Vancouver's and his family's. Some is objectively third-person; much is deeply personal. Not every reader will want to get on board with such an introspective observer, but it's a very well-written account of one man's journey.

Jonathan Raban is, for my money, among the best of our contemporary travel writers, standing shoulder to shoulder with Paul Theroux and Bill Bryson, and Passage to Juneau only reinforces that opinion. I first read this book in 1999, when it was published, because I was looking forward to a sailing trip through the Inside Passage from Seattle to Southeastern Alaska. Then I read it again just recently because I am again looking forward to this trip.Like most of Raban's books, Passage to Juneau, is written in two layers. The first is an account of his preparations and execution of a solo sailing trip from Seattle to Juneau, Alaska. The second level is an entertaining and well-researched historical account of the travels and travails of Capt. George Vancouver aboard HMS Discovery during his four-year exploration of the northwest coast of North America. But it isn't really a story about a routine sailing adventure similar to that undertaken by dozens of boats every sailing season, is it. It is a poignant story of a successful writer who in late middle age looses first his father (to cancer) and then his wife (to neglect and absence of common focus) and is left alone facing old age in disconsolate apprehension and confusion. The reader is given an early clue to the direction the book is about to take when Raban, early on in his voyage, meets a married couple who seem to cling to each other like the two sides of a Velcro patch and makes the mildly derisive comment, "some people are more married that others," leaving us with the feeling that he isn't very married at all. This is reinforced throughout the book by his obsessive preparations for a planned visit by his young daughter, where he is looking forward to showing her the bears, with only passing mention that his wife will be coming along also.Raban is an excellent writer who doesn't hesitate to bare his soul to the reader and does it with a refreshing lack of maudlinly and only a trace of sentimentality. He records his varying responses to his surrounding with an honest and only slightly judgmental way that lets the reader understands what is going on without feeling the need to interfere or change things. This interested-but-detached view is particularly apparent in his interactions with the members of the First Nations tribes he encounters, and in his slightly cynical take on the ceremonies he is invited to attend. It is like he is letting the reader share his view of the world through one of the portholes in his boat.Passage to Juneau is a recommended read for anyone interested in maritime history, for present-day sailors traveling on sailboats, and to anyone wanting a poignant yet free-from-moralizing story about the personal passage of a late-middle-aged man facing an uncertain future.

This is THE book to read if you plan to spend time on the waters around Seattle, Vancouver, the San Juans and the Inside Passage. The author shares his sailing experiences and, if you pay attention and you are a sailor, you will not have to experience a tragedy involving tides, winds, obstructions, sunken logs, large shipping, and more. The book brings to life the explorations of George Vancouver and his crew along with other early explorers and traders who plied these shores. Several areas of interest are set forth in parallel and in the form of flashbacks. For example, as the author sails the various channels and sounds along the Inside Passage and Puget Sound, he reflects upon what George Vancouver might have seen when he passed there over 200 years before. At the same time, he discusses what early Indians saw and how they related to the sea and how modern day Indians are faring. He delves into Indian art and how the Indians might have drawn artistic inspiration from wave borne reflections. Raban shares his encounters with some of the very interesting characters who inhabit the coastal waters and harbors. He even goes into the changes in the economy in the regions through which he passes. And, on top of all this, he brings you into his personal world where he sails a more stormy sea, the sea of the death of his father, his retracing his life in England and - to top it all off - the rough tides of marital issues. First, I read this book on loan from the public library and then I had to add it to my personal library. Raban introduces some authors I had not read and he enlarged my reading experience for which I thank him. He even caused me to visit Munro's bookstore in Victoria, BC. This book augmented my own voyage up the Inside Passage. I also gave it as a gift to a friend in Seattle who - like Raban - is an avid yachtsman. You will benefit by this book if you take it with you when you visit the region. A masterpiece.

Ever have a child that simply hates to read? I have one like that. Because he doesn't ever read for enjoyment, and doesn't enjoy it enough to try when he has to read for school, he struggles with spelling, language, and so many other things. My son was given book 1 of the Wings of Fire series for Christmas last year. He wasn't interested in reading it, but finally relented when he had a book report due. After all, it was about dragons, it has to better than other books he's read, right? He LOVED it! He loved it so much that he read it a second time, used hard earned money to buy books 1-5. After reading those, he just had to have number 6. He read it in 2 days.I am so thankful to have finally found a way to get him to read. He is doing better in school since starting to read too.

Ohmygosh I love this book! New prophecy! New school! New dragonets! New mysteries! New adventures! NEW NIGHTWINGS WITH POWERS!!😆 Moon Rising is so epically awesome. I had to stay up all night to read it. Twice. Moonwatcher is so cute and shy, but then I like how she becomes so much more brave and awesome toward the end. And am I going crazy, or is Winter in love with Moon?!For all of you who have not read the book yet, it starts with a NightWing dragonet hatching under two full moons. That dragonet is Moonwatcher, and she can read minds and has the gift of prophecy. The previous 'dragonets of destiny' (Sunny, Starflight, Tsunami, and Clay) have started a school underneath Jade Mountain. Moon is one of the dragons that has been accepted as a student there, and she is really quiet and secretive and shy and can read minds and is slightly adorable. In her first day there, she hears something new; a dragon who can speak back to her. However, he is only in her mind, not at the school, and he is actually a five thousand year old animus dragon. Moon begins to make friends at the school, all the while learning more about the Darkstalker, a.k.a. the mysterious animus who speaks to Moon. She learns that there is a student who is conspiring with QUEEN SCARLET and is planning a murder. A few days later, Moon gets a vision of the history cave exploding and her friends dying. She barely manages to convince them not to go in the cave, but in the explosion, 2 dragons still die, and those who didn't are very suspicious of how she knew. She finally tells them about her powers, and they get mad at her and freaked out and worried and storm off in a huff. One of those friends, Qibli, (yes, Thorn's 'guard') forgives her and tells her she should use her powers to find the dragon who set the fire.I can't tell anymore without revealing every single secret I'm the entire book

I love Wings of Fire so much!! I just got this book because I felt like re-reading it. It was really good and descriptive, but it was kind of boring. Nothing happened. Just Moon in school doing random stuff, nothing special. No suspense.Something I noticed is that when Moon asked Darkstalker "Who taught you?" after he taught her some mind-reading tricks, and Darkstalker said "My father." But, it is later revealed that Darkstalker's father was an IceWing, who knew nothing of mind reading powers, and, he hated him.One thing I don't really like is that Moon really has it all. She has long-lost powers, many friends, and makes everyone think she saved the world in the 10th book, even though she did NOTHING except talk to Darkstalker in her head. NOTHING! Anemone and Kinkajou did most of it, and they get NO CREDIT. Moon doesn't really even do anything helpful with her powers, like stopping the explosion, and keeping it a secret from her best friends. She complains about her headaches and the pressure of freeing Darkstalker all weighing down on her, but really, no one cares. Other dragons, like Anemone, should get some credit too. I think Tui T Sutherland should focus more on like, Carnelian (who loyally serves her queen and thinks that herself is stupid and only gets seen as someone grumpy) and Tamarin (who gets underestimated because of blindness but is actually smart), who've actually suffered through things.I know i sound really critical and harsh, but overall it was agreat book and i recommend it!I sound harsh

I watched the film first, and loved it so much that I watched it every day for a week. I watched interviews of the two lead actors and their take on the characters journeys... and that's when I learned it was a book adaptation. Normally I don't like to read books after I've seen the film, but this one, I had to- and I'm so glad I did. It filled in so much more of the emotion the film could barely touch on. It painted a far more realistic picture and timeline, of things that went on outside the relationship between Lou and Will, with her family, with Pat... and though this is a book review and not a film review, I have to say you won't be disappointed in either, if you had read it first or seen the film first.I couldn't put the book down, despite having watched the film several times, despite knowing the outcome... getting a little more insight into everyone's world was addictive. I only wish we could've heard a little more from Will's prospective.Being American, some of the references and language was a bit hard to follow, but overall, the sarcasm and humor translated very well.

4+ stars to Jojo Moyes's Me Before You. I saw a glimpse of the movie preview and had perused a few online reviews of the book when I added it to my "To Read" list. I had to read it before I could watch it which means moving it up quickly. It seemed like a good choice yesterday morning and soon it became my Saturday read!StoryWill was hit while crossing the street ending the extremely adventerous part of his life and leaving him a quadriplegic. His friends slowly disappeared and Will was stuck moving back home with his parents living a very minimalistic life where he basically sat in his chair staring thru the window all day long. He comes to an agreement with his family about his care for a 6 month period where he will try to be a little more positive but afterwards, they must accept his choices.Louisa was content with a simple life supporting her parents and sister but suddenly lost her job and had to find something to be able to help survive. She had very little hopes and dreams mostly because she just addressed each day as it came never really focusing on her own future. She accepts a job as a caretaker for Will where she's supposed to just try to keep him a little cheerful but fights with the decision to take on this type of role for a 6 month duration. They of course mix like oil and water at first but in time find a way to tolerate one another. Their relationship eventually gains depth and learn they need one another to keep going forward. But Will's ultimate plans are not what Louisa expected, and she struggles with how to accept his choices. The story takes you on a path of romance, anger, hope and despair ending in a very emotional place but opening the door for a sequel to see what happens after this experience.StrengthsFor most readers, this book will take you away from your own life's troubles giving you something much more intense in which to immerse yourself. The pacing, timing, setting, character development and imagery will capture your attention and make you realize you likely have it pretty good in your own life. While you'll understand enough of the pain and barriers people with physical disabilities experience, you will also learn what it's like emotionally to handle such a huge change to your lifestyle and relationships. By the end, your problems will seem far less dramatic and you may even walk away from the book feeling energized to be more positive. (And yes, you'll spend most of the book crying and sad!)WeaknessesWith full caution, I may not be aware of what life is like in towns like the one in this book and thus this may not actually be a weakness... however, Louisa's family and hometown seems a bit unrealistic. I get that she has two parents, a grandparent, a sister and a nephew living with her and times are tough financially. I get that parents sometimes tease their kids about life choices. But there's a clear love between the family at the same time as a clear favoritism for Louisa's sister over Louisa. Many pages are devoted to how intelligent and beautiful her sister is and why the family needs to spend more money and love on her. Louisa may act a bit plain and simple, but she's the one supporting the family. And then when the mother reacts to Louisa's choices at the end of the book, I was confused as to why she would be so divergent. Yet the scene where Will comes to Louisa's birthday party were incredibly touching to a point where I really liked her family. It felt a little bit yo-yo-ish for me.Final ThoughtsTo love this book, you have to love emotion. You have to be OK with crying and getting angry. You have to be OK with accepting how other people have a right to make their own choices. You have to realize people are different. You have to understand that yes, there are people in the world like this and just because you haven't met them or interacted with them much doesn't mean they aren't there. What I loved most about this book was the beauty and pain from which I am often sheltered. And when a book makes you get out of your own skin, you have to acknowledge its strengths.

#Daughternumber2 read Me Before You by JoJo Moyes back at the End of April, Beginning of May. She gave it 5 stars and was such an emotional mess after reading it that I think I was taken aback by it. I am ashamed to admit that it took me weeks to pick up the book. I think part of it was because I was afraid that I wouldn't like the movie (and I really wanted to like the movie!) or that it wouldn't live up to all the hype.I did however pick up the book. I made plans with #DaughterNumber2 to see the movie on a Sunday afternoon. So Friday night I picked the book up. I was impressed, and loved being in a English (British) book. There is just something about the language that I love. I started feeling connected to the main character, but also started to feel the pain, and sorrow that must of been going through Will and his parents. While this was a super interesting and REAL story, I was caught off guard by all the feels I had. I went through every emotion possible while reading this story! I latterly finished the book 20 minutes before leaving to see the movie! Now I am vary familiar with book to movie adaptions. And as far as those go, this was a pretty good adaption. I understand the scenes that were cut, and can understand why. I however had a few issues with the near end of the story and how things were changed for the movie verses the book. I wish that part was closer to the story.Overall I give the Book 4 1/2 Stars and the movie 4 stars.

As someone who is young and chronically ill and my husband, who is young and seriously ill, so many parts of this book tugged at my heart strings. So many parts of it were relatable. We both had to adjust our lives significantly after becoming ill. We lost more than anyone can imagine. Healthy people don’t understand us. Etc etc etc. i honestly believe Will wanted to take revenge for his ex girlfriend marrying his best friend and that’s why he had no desired to live. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and how Will was slowly becoming happy again doing things despite being in a wheelchair. I was highly disappointed how the book ended however. I know Will was desperate to be able to make his own choices because he felt that was taken from him but he could’ve. He had money which a lot of ill people don’t have because they can’t work, he had a nice annex to live in, he could’ve hired playboy bunnies to dance for him if that’s what his heart desired. But what he didn’t have was the will to adjust and live life. I don’t blame him but there’s hundreds and thousands of very ill disabled people who once had beautiful lives and have had to adjust. Life isn’t always beautiful the way we dreamt it to be. Often finding the beauty if our lives is what makes us happy. He could’ve found another girl, if not Louisa who made him happy. It’s not always about snobby pretty girls and being an aggressive businessman that equals a good happy life.

If you agree that our social, political and cultural discussion have degenerated to a screaming horde of people calling others names (accusing those who disagree of racism for example), that instead of trying to have a rational dialogue to lead the way to a positive political change, some groups just want to silence all dissent, and that what once was considered untouchable (Free Speech) is now under attack, and above all; that we have to learn to how to properly counter that, then this book is for you. Written as an answer to Rules for Radicals and a teaching tool, Hedgpeth explain how insidious Alinsky teachings are, explaining the infamous rules for radicals. Then he goes on how to counter them in an effective way, since “rational discourse” will get you nowhere with Alinsky disciples (the rules are designed to make rational discourse practically impossible). Is a brief, easy to read book that will help you learn more of how we have come to “safe places” and “free speech zones”, and how we must begin to counter all of that, but in a democratic, smart way.P.S. I recommend that you read it along with Rules for Conservatives.

Great book. A must read for every American.

It's a dam scary book everyone needs to read that wants to stay a free person

This book makes it very clear what the left is doing in this country.

Most valuable!

This is a good counter-point to Rules for Radicals. How to turn their actions back on top of them. A must for anyone serious on the right. However, one should also study Alinsky's Rule for Radials first.

When I got to the author's practical rules or guidelines I thought they were quite good though he didn't address the point that it is more costly to defend the truth than lie.
