After reading through this book I am inspired to try some new recipes! It is a comprehensive guide to smoking meat, but it was much more broad that I expected. From areas of the United States that are the barbecue hotspots to what type of wood you should use for certain meats, this book covers it all! Even though I don't have a smoker, I am still benefiting from this book as there are some great recipes for sauces and side dishes that pair well with meat dishes. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a smoker or is interested in purchasing one. I received this item in exchange for an honest review.

This is an excellent book for those who want to start cooking real BBQ. It starts off with the basics in explaining the different type of smokers and moves into the regional differences of BBQing. I’m a big fan of Texas style BBQ and I really liked their brisket recipe as well as their Texas style BBQ sauce. I am looking forward to trying out some of the recipes from the “Not Your Everyday BBQ” chapter. As a beginner smoker (but seasoned backyard griller) I highly recommend this book.

I totally feel like I could enter and win one of those BBQ competitions after reading this book. I know about those BBQ competitions because this book tells where they are and how much you can win. Clearly, I have been wasting my time in the kitchen. I need to be outside fiddling with a smoker and signing up to win big money. It has so much information and even some pictures. I liked that it explained the difference between smoking and grilling. Who knew? It gives smoker maintenance which I would have not thought about half of those things. Another wonderful part of this book is it lists different woods and tells what flavors they have for the meat. Again, who knew? I am not one to give books as gifts, but this would be a perfect book to give those newlyweds or a graduate. I did receive this book for free for review purposes.

This book is a very good introduction to the art of smoking. It is very versatile as it is good for beginners as well veteran smokers, who are looking for new recipes. I liked the way the book was organized with an introduction to smoking and how a smoker works and then leading into the recipes. I think this is a gook book to pair along with any new smoker purchase as it talks about the process of smoking and would be good to read before you begin smoking. The recipes section of the book has uncommon smoking items like salmon, duck, and cheese as well as smoking staples like ribs, pulled pork, and brisket. It also includes side dishes which was part of the reason I purchased this book over others. The book it self is flexible in design and includes vibrant pictures and drawings which help to break up the recipes and instructions.

Real BBQ: The Ultimate Step-by-Step Smoker Cookbook is the perfect gift to get any man in your life, be it your husband, father, brother or even son. This is the ultimate smoker cookbook. While my husband is an expert on the grill, he is a beginner with the smoker. This book starts out with telling you the basics, how everything works, the process and what to look for in a smoker. Once you learn about which smoker is right for you, and how you want to fuel it (along with a few pointers from Pit Masters) you reach the delicious recipes. The recipes are broken up into the different types of meats; Turkey, Chicken, Pork, Beef, Seafood and more. Last weekend we tried out the "All Day Long" Smoked Beef Briskit and followed the recipe to a T. We were really surprised with how delicious and moist the meat tasted, after all it was our first time really cooking on the slow cooker. If you are new to using a Smoker, this is the perfect book for you.*I received this product for a discount in exchange for my honest review*

I love to cook, grill and use a smoker. There's nothing better than smoked meat on a hot summer day. This book was excellent for tips and tricks on BBQ and smoking meat. I liked that the recipes and tips were easy to follow, even if you are a novice.The book breaks down type of meat you are using, fat contents, types of smoker and wood chip recommendations for flavors. The recipes are broken down for you and detailed in level of difficulty.I also enjoyed their selection on marinades and rubs, which have been delicious.I prefer to use an electric smoker or turn my grill into a smoker with wood chips. All these elements are easily explained with temperatures based on protein of your choice and what temperature the meat should be when it is considered cooked.The beer can chicken recipe was amazing - this is something I could make once a week. I have heard of using coffee as a rub but never actually tried it until recently. A coffee rub is excellent on beef. What a surprise! My next attempt will be lobster tails.Besides a healthy dose of meat recipes you can find side dishes such as beans and potato salad in this book. I loved the dijon potato recipe and plan to make it on a regular basis. Overall this is a great book I pick up on the weekends and plan out fun family meals.

When first looking at the title, I was weary at how much information I could find in the book. I'm an avid BBQer, and I was wondering how much this book could teach me. Well, let me tell you how wrong I was... The first two chapters covered equipment and the different styles of Southern BBQ. The detail that was covered in these two chapters was worth the price of the book alone. The book is appropriately broken down into the different proteins. Very easy to navigate. The chapter that covers sauces, rubs and more is written well and makes it easier to navigate the other chapters where these are being used. The tips that were included throughout the book from great BBQ masters were not only incredibly helpful, but made the book fun to read. It helped you get more into the book. The smoky, spicy chicken thighs recipe was exactly how they described it, with bold flavors and crispy skin. The recommended wood for each recipe was dead on. The Kansas City-style glazed spare ribs with a dry rub and a Kansas City-style BBQ sauce makes me understand why Kansas City is one of the Meccas of BBQ. I highly recommend this cookbook to novice and professionals alike.

I must admit it did take a while to really get into the different personalities but once it got there it was very interesting. I can't imagine having a child in the midst of trying to figure out what is wrong.

well written. the first part of the book seemed much too long and repetitious, but it seemed to all come together at the end and I realized the why the extra details were needed.I have followed Kim Noble on the internet for years, on Oprah and was anxious to read her book. Kim is an amazingly strong and courageous woman. I wish I could meet Kim Noble.

Very good read on what it's like to be in the shoes of someone who has DID. It definitely helps you understand this topic more. The background is disturbing, as are all cases of DID but she gives you strength through her strength once you see how amazing the human mind can cope with abuse at infancy

I absolutely could not put this book down once I started reading it! I read the entire book in 3 days! And even after finishing the book I would go back and look over certain parts again. I thought just reading articles about this book gave me enough information but that is not true. The book is filled with so many details and important statements that make a person really think and reflect. So many times I wished that I could have protected and cared for Kim Noble the body so she and her alters would not have had to go through so much pain and confusion and heartache. I liked how most of the chapters had thoughts from the other alters (besides Patrica the dominant) so that the reader could learn more about them and their background. Before reading this book I truly thought it would be best if Kim's body could be intergrated into one. But I do understand more about DID after reading this book and how each personality has its own life essentially. I certainly would not want Patricia to ever dissappear! I can relate in that when something tragic happens to a person your mind can't bear it so it sort of hides it so you don't feel the pain as much. However; it is amazing that these different personalities can develop and each not even know about the other and have special talents such as speaking different languages. When Patricia realizes that she is an alter and that shares a body with all these different people and she wants to just scrub her body and put sand paper on her tongue was such a real, heart wrenching statement that I think anyone would think. I kept trying to put myself in her shoes and think how I would feel or how I would react. She is such a strong person! I got the feeling that we have barely touched the skim of what really happened to Kim to cause her to split into all this alters. But I completely understand that this is a healing process and a learning process and the body wants to protect Patricia and all the alters. I have my own opinions about who I think may have hurt Kim when she was a baby but I think what happened may be worse than any of us could have guessed. I hope that Patricia continues to write more books as her life progresses. I would also enjoy hearing the other alters' stories too. I really like Patricia and hope that she continues to be the main alter. That is how personal this book becomes as you read it. And I truly think that having Aimee was the saving grace for the body. They had someone special to love, take care of, and make sure that they took good care of themself for her. A very endearing story that is a true story. Now I want to hear more! I highly recommend this book to everyone! Excellent story. I would go on and on as I have so many questions and comments to make about what happened but I don't want to give too much away to future readers :)

I found this book enlightening. I had thought that the evils we (the US) sometimes do in the world were aberrations caused by greed of individuals accepting corporate donations. I have been off the mark. It turns out that this is a cohesive philosophy with actual followers: authors, scholars, and theologians. It was the theological underpinnings of this philosophy that shocked me. Some theologians say that third world poverty has a religious and moral dimension. It is the fault of the poor because they don't have respect for private property. A touch of Calvinism is involved too. Our prosperity is evidence that God prefers us. The profit motive is part of God's divine plan to discipline fallen man and make him produce. The Evangelicals actually sent _guns_ and bibles to the Contras! While the corporations might not be religious, they can certainly make common cause with this philosophy.This philosophy is what made it okay to attack and kill human beings who had never done anything to us in Iraq. I had been mistaken in my thought that it was caused by a temperamentally belligerent president and a vice president in the pay of the military industrial complex.This philosophy says it is okay to create instability and poverty in a nation because we can then lead these poor, tired people to unregulated capitalism which is the highest good.Having said the book is enlightening, I must add it is hard to read. The run on sentences kept having me backtrack to antecedents. And words like "insurgents" must necessarily shift meaning depending upon who is in power. I suggest wading through it anyway.

This book is an extremely powerful look at the history of the U.S. relationship with Latin America. I really recommend it for anyone wanting to better understand current issues in Latin America today.

Greg Grandin's Empire's Workshop is a work of enormous synthetic breadth. While it is a commonplace for commentators to point out that many of the policy analysts and foreign policy specialists that staffed the Reagan administration have also staffed the George W. Bush administration, in my reading Grandin's work is the first to chart the philosophical, policy and propagandistic correlations between them.Grandin demonstrates that many of the techniques employed by the Bush administration to garner and sustain support for its wars and to employ effective disinformation were forged and refined in the laboratory (or "workshop" as Grandin puts it) of Central America during the Reagan years. Particularly novel is Grandin's analysis of how both Reagan and Bush curried the active support of the USA religious right in pursuit of its foreign and military policy aims. In the end, the reader realizes that the Reagan years became a template for the Bush years.The book is brilliant. I found it difficult to put it down.

This is a very readable book about US foreign policy in Latin America. I used it as a resource when writing MA level papers about US foreign policy. It is a good read and well worth adding to your library.

Have you ever wonder why the rest of America despises or doesn't trust the USA? Yes I wrote America so the people living in the USA will finally comprehend that America is a continent not a country, people please check your map!!! Well let me tell you why, is because the USA always interfere or sticks her big nose in the business of her American neighbors, just to name a few examples/ Guatemala 1954 and Chile 1973, and also a big part of the real problem is that the USA is not governed by the President, he or she is just a pawn or an employee of the big corporations, and the person in the Oval Office will do anything in his or her power to keep the big CEO's happy. You want proof of this? Think about these recent events, 9\11, the wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, the tax payer's money given to big corporations to cover the losses caused by their satanic greed and Guantanamo. Also I'm tired of hearing that illegal immigration has ruined the USA, let me tell you that if you keep your nose to your own business and leave the rest of America alone, you won't have a big immigration problem and just to keep in mind that the USA was built by immigrant hands. Please the USA has enough problems, public education, public health, a failed economic system and social disintegration just to mention a few, for the United States' Government to start thinking about building a global empire. FYI I'm not a leftist or a USA hater, I like the USA and its people very much but I don't have affection for the neoconservatives and the capitalist pigs that think in big profits before their fellow human beings. Enough said, peace, live long and prosper. I'M PROUD OF BEING A REAL AMERICAN!!!!!

Zayd Saleem is a fourth grade boy who loves basketball. His goal is to make the school's gold basketball team. When he gets in trouble for blowing off violin lessons, it looks like his dream isn't going to happen. Will things turn around? You'll have to read the book to find out.Power Forward is a well-written middle grade story. The dialogue between the characters has a good flow, and the story is one that a lot of young boys can relate to. Another nice feature is that the main character is of Pakistani heritage. There's a lot of interesting cultural references sprinkled throughout the book. Not only is it a story that kids can relate to, it has some good life lessons: One, that you should stand up for yourself and follow your dreams. Two, that you should work hard to accomplish your goals. Three, that you should be honest. The book isn't long, but that makes it ideal for reluctant readers. This is an excellent start for a series. In Hena Khan's fun yet touching new book series, Chasing the Dream, 4th grader Zayd Saleem is set on becoming an amazing basketball player. These books center around Zayd’s obsession with basketball, so you would think I would be the last person to pick it up off the shelf. Yet these inspiring stories about the everyday challenges of a Pakistani-American boy pursuing his dream managed to grasp my attention and win my love even though I am not a huge fan of sports.The first book in the series, Power Forward, is about Zayd’s efforts to make his dream team, the one that his BFF, Adam, is on. Unfortunately, his parents care more about him mastering the violin, and when (SPOILER ALERT) Zayd gets grounded for blowing off violin practice, it seems as though he has lost his chance to try out for the Gold Team. Soon, Zayd has to deal with extra music lessons to make up for the lost practice while also maintaining a food journal to keep track of what he eats (Zayd is very underweight and suffers from unusual stomach pains). Can Zayd still try out for the Gold Team and accomplish what he had always wanted?We find out in On Point, the second book in this series, that Zayd does accomplish his goal but in the process, he learns that many new challenges lie ahead both at school and at home. After finally making the Gold Team, Zayd thought his troubles were over (he had also hit 60 pounds!), but his favorite uncle getting married turns life into a circus at home, and pretty soon the Gold Team begins to struggle. Zayd can’t help but wonder if it is because of him. Even worse, his best friend Adam suddenly doesn’t seem to be interested in basketball anymore, and has turned to football instead. Zayd finds himself having to suddenly navigate challenging times not only on his new basketball team, but in dealing with the changes in his relationships with both his best friend and his favorite uncle, all the while trying to stay true to his family and friends.This book series is a huge contrast to Hena Khan’s previous book, Amina’s Voice, but I loved it just as much. Amina’s Voice told a poignant, artful story about a second generation Pakistani-American girl’s struggle to find her voice, both in the sense of overcoming the challenges of a typical middle schooler, but also in trying to live up to certain cultural expectations imposed by a distant uncle visiting from Pakistan. The funny thing is, Amina’s near perfect, angelic character didn’t resonate with me as much as Zayd’s imperfect, flawed self. I was able to relate to how Zayd got grounded and ditched violin (something his parents wanted him to love), for his true passion, basketball. Even though Amina was definitely more like me (she played the piano and loved to sing), it just wasn’t as easy to imagine myself in her shoes.Something I love about both Amina’s Voice and the Chasing the Dream series is Hena’s frequent use of cultural and religious references, as well as to foods from Pakistan like when Zayd’s grandma wanted to fatten Zayd up with paratha. I also loved that Zayd’s grandpa teaches him cricket and watches ridiculous soap operas with him and his sister. These descriptive and thoughtful details help the reader to understand Muslim culture while laughing along with the characters and thinking of our unique relationships with our own relatives. Having read each of Hena’s books in this series in one sitting, I am incredibly excited for the next one to come out in October!

Hena Khan does a great job of addressing the anxieties that tweens face.I have a 10 year old daughter who just finished reading Point Forward. She said it’s the best book that she has ever read. She said that it made sense ( I am guessing it’s the Pakistani references!). There were many moments where she was giggling because she could relate to the family situations.She is now on the book On Point and is eagerly awaiting the third book in the series. We just preordered it!

My 10-year-old son got this book on a Friday afternoon, and finished it by Saturday evening. He was so enthralled that he just couldn't put it down. There is something in Zayd's story for nearly any tween/pre-teen kid can relate to - sports, culture, humor, and drama. He is REALLY looking forward to reading the next two books!! Highly recommend!!

My second grader is hooked! I had been looking for books that would have a character he connected with as a young boy. He loves Zayd and Adam’s genuine friendship, that there are cultural references he finds familiar, and that Zayd is a boy who loves basketball just like him!

This great book is perfect for elementary school readers - my 7 year old son loves the basketball references and the fact that the main character gets in trouble for skipping violin. So appreciate this new voice in children’s literature.
