What We Believe: Understanding and Confessing the Apostles' Creed, by R. C. Sproul

From the Back Cover

"When a person embraces the Christian faith and says with assurance, 'I believe . . . ,' then that person has truly embarked upon life."--R. C. SproulTo be a Christian is to be one who believes. But believes in what? In an age of cafeteria-style religion--a little bit of this, a little bit of that--believers new and old may be overlooking the basic tenets of faith in favor of modern trends that have no biblical basis. For millennia, Christians have affirmed the Apostles' Creed because it summarizes the tenets of Christian belief, boldly declaring that there is uncompromising truth that is foundational to life. In this book, renowned theologian R. C. Sproul presents the creed statement by statement, unpacking what it means to believe in God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, and what Christians believe about the church, salvation, and eternal life.R. C. Sproul (1939-2017) was founder of Ligonier Ministries, an international Christian discipleship organization located near Orlando, Florida. He was also founding pastor of Saint Andrew's Chapel in Sanford, Florida, first president of Reformation Bible College, and executive editor of Tabletalk magazine. His radio program, Renewing Your Mind, is still broadcast daily on hundreds of radio stations around the world and can also be heard online. Dr. Sproul contributed dozens of articles to national evangelical publications, spoke at conferences, churches, colleges, and seminaries around the world, and wrote more than one hundred books, including The Holiness of God, Chosen by God, and Everyone's a Theologian. He also served as general editor of the Reformation Study Bible.

Very well written

Awsom theology

Virtually everything by RC Sproul is great...

great

Once again RC brings vitality to theology. Recommend.

I enjoyed reading this book because I got some answers to why we say what we say in the Creed.

In 1973 R.C. Sproul's first book, The Symbol, was published. It was an appropriate title, but not one that grabs attention. This book is now in its 4th edition, and has its 4th title. In 1982 it was released as Basic Training. And in 1998 it was released as Renewing Your Mind. It has been recently updated and released as What We Believe. This is probably the best title this volume has had because it goes straight to the point. The book is about the Apostles' Creed and therefore basic theology for Christians. While I have not read previous editions, which is surprising to me actually, this is not the same book. It is updated and interacts with some newer challenges and has contemporary illustrations. This book is very much what you expect from R.C. Sproul. He presents theology and philosophy (his undergraduate degree is in philosophy) in an understandable and interesting way. His purpose is revealed at the end of the first chapter: "The following chapters offer a contemporary explanation of its teaching- not to give a historical exposition of each point, but to apply its basic tenets to contemporary faith-issues."This means it is not an exhaustive book. It does not get into all the historical controversies that it addresses. This is an introductory book. This is not Herman Witsius' 2 volume work (my copy seems to be missing) or even Michael Horton's book We Believe. It isn't like Rooted by Cannata and Reitano with its missional focus either. This really is basic training. While I would be interested in many of the historical controversies the Creed addresses, not everyone is.In basic training, a drill sergeant will deconstruct you before building you into a soldier. This book, in some ways, seeks to deconstruct elements of a non-Christian world view to build up a Christian one.He begins with the words "I believe" to talk about what faith is. He talks about content, assent and faith. Faith is rational, not a leap into the existential dark. Saving faith looks to and delights in Christ. Faith is not superstition either, this is seen most clearly in suffering. Faith complicates life because it brings an ethical system with it. True faith will produce a changed life; an increasingly holy life. "To say that faith is reasonable is not to confuse faith with rationalism. Rationalism emphasizes the mind's ability to understand all reality without help."This is why R.C. says "Faith involves confessing more than professing; in the final analysis, it is a platform of commitment to the will of God." The content of our biblical faith should fill our minds and find a happy home in our hearts so we become more like Jesus.Faith is not faith in faith, but in God. Here Sproul stresses the need for content. He notes a rally by Louis Farrakhan where he was surrounded and applauded by a number of "Christian" pastors. The god Farrakhan believes in is incredibly different from the one "we" do. There is also existentialism's impact on Christian theology that drove it to liberalism and the Jesus Seminar nonsense that robbed theology of its content. From there he moves into how we can speak of God, and can't. He discusses the hidden God who is also the God revealed. In the midst of this he brings out Moby Dick, one of his favorite novels and the subject of his dissertation. "Our talk of him is legitimate because he has entered into the arena of human activity. We confess not only that there is a God, but that God can be known and that our knowledge of him can be meaningfully communicated."One of the challenges that comes up is creation. While he isn't pushing a 6 24-hour day creation, he focuses on our dignity as a result of creation. The other option is chaos, the loss of dignity and of values. God is both above creation (transcendent) and actively involved in creation (immanent) thus ruling out panentheism and deism respectively. He then moves into Jesus as the conclusive revelation of God. He briefly interacts with the contemporary attempts to remove Jesus from history or separate a historical Jesus from the church's theology of Jesus. He focuses on many of the names of Christ to reveal who He is.His chapter on the virgin birth addresses the challenges presented by the attack on miracles. He also defends the historic Christian view from the common rabbinic (and liberal) view that "alma" in Isaiah doesn't necessitate a virgin birth. The New Testament, however, clearly does teach that Mary was. "alma" doesn't exclude virginity, and Matthew's account clarifies it.One of the weak links in the book is the chapter on eschatology. He sticks closely to the Creed, but doesn't really address any of the evangelical views that in competition with one another. Perhaps this reflects his earlier lack of commitment to a millennial position. There are a few other places where I wish he would offer greater clarity. This is really a book for those who are new to their faith, or the Apostles' Creed. While not necessarily simplistic, Sproul is introducing concepts to people. More advanced readers will not be challenged enough. But it is one to keep on hand to help those younger in the faith.[I received a complimentary copy of the book for the purposes of review.)

R. C. Sproul is a household name among reformed evangelicals, and perhaps simply among evangelicals. For years, his books have encouraged, challenged, and at times provoked reformed and non-reformed believers alike. Whether readers are of Sproul’s theological persuasion or not, his works are valuable, rational, and clear. In this 4th edition of What We Believe, Sproul rereleases one of his foundational books on the basics of Christian doctrine. Formerly released as Renewing Your Mind, this work is a systematic and sequential walk through the Apostles’ Creed. As I read this book, I found myself encouraged by Sproul’s simple and clear handling of theological concepts such as faith, trinity, Christology, and the church. Since we were in the Christmas season as I read this, I particularly found Sproul’s treatment of the importance of the virgin birth of Christ and the proper view of Mary to be solid reminders of valuable truths.I also found this writing to be one of Sproul’s most gentle. He certainly does not compromise on any theological truth in the work. Yet, he is not riding any personal, theological hobby horses. For example, though Sproul’s eschatological views are strong enough for him to have written an entire book, he did not use this work to insert any of his nuances into the affirmation that Christ will return. What We Believe would make a fine book for use in Bible study, either home-based or Sunday School. It is simple, but the truths in this book are foundational. It is Sproul, so the occasional Latin phrase will work its way into the text, but the concepts are still quite readable and understandable for people who come to the book from a variety of backgrounds.Note: I received a free copy of this book for review purposes from the publisher.

First off- it seemed as though it was printed straight from an e-book. There were links you could "click" so you could see the transformation pictures they reference. Secondly, it's like 40 pages, including recipes. If you aren't a heavy reader this may be a good buy for you because I don't think it even took me ten minutes to read the entire thing. Was super bummed with this purchase. Seeing how this book got such great reviews I definitely expected more content. Everything I read in it seemed to be either common sense or I'd already read in other articles/books. It's alright if you want a (VERY) basic overview but don't expect any in-depth knowledge. If you're already vegan (like me) don't bother purchasing. You've probably already read the "tips & tricks" listed in this book.

I was looking for a book which can help me and guide me in getting a fit body shape. This book is a good one. It taught me a lot of things to get back in shape in an easy way and healthy way. This book shared some diet meal plan which are tasty and healthy to intake. I am loving the result and I must say that I highly recommend this book to everyone.

First I decided to be a vegan, I had a fear about getting fat and lose my shape. I was reading books and articles but couldn't find good information about it.I had that fear because most of my friends who are vegan, they start gaining extra weight because they eat much more carbs than protein. This book helped me how I can balance my diet as a vegan.Different food options, which food should I avoid, which food should I get. This book covers them all!Daily menu helped me choose my meals easy!Snack tips between meals are my true savers! I highly recommend this book for beginners who are searching a great source for being vegan and vegan diet.

I've been a vegetarian for a while now, but I want to trial a vegan diet to see what impact it has on my physique. Although I'm healthy, I'd like to be that little extra bit lean! Within the book the numerous benefits of a vegan lifestyle are clearly and concisely explained - many of which I was never aware of. The best thing about the guide was the interesting recipes that can put a tasty twist on your your meal plans. Overall, this is a great informative guide for anyone just starting with a vegan diet with the hope of achieving a super lean body.

It wasn't very educating for me as I am already a vegan for 3 years now and read the book 80/10/10 before. I would recommend this book for vegan newbies or people who do not know anything about the high carb low fat lifestyle.Since I became vegan I lost a lot of weight (and I wasn't overweight to begin with) and a lot medical issues that could not be solved by ordinary medical treatment got better along the process.I recommend this book and lifestyle to anyone whose tired of being tired, tired of yo-yo dieting, loves animals, loves fruit, loves themselves enough to treat their bodies as they deserve to be treated.

This was a really great book on the Vegan Lean diet. Ever since my birthday last year, followed by major holidays like Thanksgiving, Christmas, then New Year's where I partied too hard and drank a ton, I feel really yucky and fat. This book is full of tips to easily go vegan and get lean without a whole lot of sacrifice! It is full of easy meal prep tips and the ingredients were all easy to find. I'll definitely be keeping this book in my arsenal of weapons to fight the fat and get lean!

This book is full of tips to easily go vegan and get lean without a whole lot of sacrifice! It is full of easy meal prep tips and the ingredients were all easy to find. A lot of books just include the health benefits of being vegan. This book not only includes a meal plan, but stories from other people who have lost weight!! The best thing about the guide was the interesting recipes that can put a tasty twist on your your meal plans.

This book plus her bonus teach me how to eat healthy plus the inspirational YouTube videos motivated me. I never knew Vegan chips, cookies or ice cream are not necessary healthy. I learn that from this book. I work in a grocery store and I have craving for junk foods and I tend to give in my craving but her bonus tips put my craving into rest. I highly recommend this concise and valuable book. :)

If you grew up like I did in the 1970s greater New York metro area, you will want to read Richard Neer's memoir of life at WNEW-FM during its hard-rock heyday just for the blasts of nostalgic recognition. Radio handles like "Rosko", "Scottso", and "The Nightbird" become vivid personalities, and you are reconnected to a time when people anxiously awaited the latest Moody Blues LP. But even without such attachments going in, you will find "FM" a pretty absorbing read on many levels.First, there's the gossipy behind-the-scenes aspect, of discovering who didn't get along with whom among a group of high-profile radio disc jockeys to whom the big shots of the day, like Led Zeppelin and Elton John, came a-calling. They called WNEW the place "where rock lives" for a reason. Then there's the aspect of WNEW-FM's place as an oasis of free-form radio while the medium was changing all around them, a period that ran roughly from just before Neer's arrival as a weekend jock in 1971 to the murder of John Lennon in 1980. The money still came in for a while after that, but as Neer writes, the dream was over. Finally, there's the fact Neer is a sensible, candid observer of all around him, who can describe lovingly and at some length everything from his first broadcasting experience on college radio to his initial trepidation when cornered by Jonathan Schwartz, a velvet-throated rock-jock mainstay at the time. With a voice like that, Neer thought, Schwartz had to be gay."I would learn later that my fears were completely unfounded, and that Jonno went through women like [fellow WNEW legend Scott] Muni went through scotch."I suspect Neer and Schwartz aren't on speaking terms today, not for that so much as a hilarious anecdote he shares about Schwartz, two willing bedmates, and Schwartz's idea of mood music, his own pre-recorded voice on the radio. But Neer's loss of a Christmas card is our gain. It's like that the whole way through, Neer explaining the unsavory as well as the heroic aspects of WNEW's rise to fame. Sex and drugs, yes, though more the former than the latter, unless ego counts as a drug. That the jocks had in spades. When Alison Steele a.k.a. "The Nightbird", sensed a new female jock WNEW had hired was a threat to her domain, she got the woman fired. Schwartz eschewed the disk jockey term for one he coined himself: "Jocque du disques". For a lot of jocks, the term "free-form" meant playing whatever they wanted to, and sneering anytime the word "Arbitron" came up.They're a great bunch all the same. Neer makes clear his overall admiration for their varying personalities and what they did. It's hard not to envy Neer his "Almost-Famous" style proximity to the entire gang and the world they represented, a world that arose greenfield-like in the late 1960s from the underused hinterlands of the FM dial just as rock music became polytonal, expansive and willfully reckless. Neer even fills in the details of the wider rock/FM scene without losing his focus on WNEW.He takes sidetrips to California, where free-form programming was taken even more seriously and crashed even more spectacularly than in New York. The last 100 pages deal with WNEW after free-form's heyday ended, and are far less vital reading than the 1971-81 section, as new wave and grunge began pushing hard rock into the oldies circuit.Draggy or not, Neer finds a way to bring it all together, not in such a way as to draw in the uninitiated (his prose is solid but never immersive) but to reward the curious. Radio lovers will enjoy this deep dive into a world, still a part of many living memories, that feels a million miles away.

Richard Neer has created a great accounting of the Golden Age of progressive free form radio. While this focuses a great deal on WNEW FM where Richard worked, it gives insight to the whole genre of radio as well as sister stations such as WMMR in Philadelphia ("the radio station") as well as similar stations in LA, Cleveland, etc. If you grew up during this period listening to progressive radio its a must read to get the inside scoop on your favorite DJs and how it all evolved and devolved. Scott Muni, Carol Miller, Allison Steele the Nightbird, Dennis Elsas, Pete Fornatale, and many others (some still on satellite radio and local radio, are discussed). Great insight into the radio and rock and roll industries as well as their effect on the culture and the cultures effect on them.

I was big fan of WNEW FM growing up. Richard Neer does a nice job discussing the music and the on air personalities that made the station a must listen to in the 70's and 80's. I enjoyed Richard's description of the internal politics of the station. I remember with sadness the demise of the station when I found I could no longer listen to it in the 90's. Of course by then it was only a couple of years until I could listen to satellite radio and now stream whatever music I like.As an avid sports fan I still make it a point to listen to terrestrial radio today and Richard Neer Saturday mornings on WFAN.WNEW where rock lives!

This is really two books. One is a memoir describing Neer’s career in radio, especially at WNEW-FM. Readers who were fans of that station will enjoy hearing stories about the various DJs, and also the many top-name rock stars who bonded with the station. Some of the stories are funny, and not all are flattering. The second book is what the title suggests: an account of how rock FM radio went from free-form to corporate, eventually imploding because of clueless management. The descriptions here were more balanced than I expected. For sure, some of the key players come across as arrogant jerks, but Neer also shows some sympathy for the managers who were trying to make sense of a changing world.Overall, the book reads real well, almost like a novel. He also does a good job of weaving in what was going on at progressive rock stations in Boston, California and elsewhere. What bothered me were the many direct quotes of conversations where Neer was not present. Presumably that info came from some of the people mentioned in the Acknowledgements, but he makes no mention of the specific sources or any suggestion that those accounts might be biased. It's all stated as fact.
