About the Author

Andreas Deja was ten years old when he first applied for a job as a Disney animator. The Walt Disney Studios wrote back to Deja telling him that they had no openings, but were always on the lookout for new talent. At the age of 20, he applied again and was accepted. This launched a long and successful career with Disney. Deja has left his mark on some of the most memorable and successful Disney animated features and shorts. His early work includes animation and character design for The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In addition, he is known for his animation of some of Disney’s most evil villains: Gaston, Jafar, and Scar. The list of memorable characters continues with King Triton, Mickey Mouse, Hercules, Lilo, Goofy, Tigger, Mama Odie, and Juju. In 2006, at the 35th Annie Awards, Deja was awarded the Winsor McCay Award for outstanding contribution to the art of animation. In 2015, he was named a Disney Legend by the Walt Disney Company. Presently, Deja is working on his own independent animated short films and is actively involved in his animation-related blog, Deja View.

This book is awesome!!

Simply Brilliant! This book could NOT have been written by ANYONE else. Andreas KNEW almost all of them. So these are FACTS, not opinions.I worked at Disney Animation many years ago. And I have been waiting along time for a book like this! The way Andreas fills the page with heartfelt stories, and techniques and using negative space to fill with beautiful images. BREATHTAKING! If you're a fan of a Walt Disney, Andreas Deja or animation you MUST buy this book!I can't wait to sit down and start sketching! Not that I can hold a candle to any of these artists. But you can't help to be utterly inspired. Thank you Andreas! A legend animator creates a legendary book!!!

The Nine Old Men, the key animators of the 1940's and 50's, continue to inspire many up and coming animators.Andreas Deja, one of the leading Disney animators of the Renaissance era, knew and was taught by most of the Nine Old Men and writes about their careers and contributions to Disney Animation.Unlike Canemaker's earlier book which chronicled the lives of the Nine Old Men, Deja focuses on their skills and animation style while providing many animation sketches of a few scenes from a given film. I love the craft of these animation drawings. For up and coming animators, this should provide inspiration and insight on how to approach various animation aspects.Deja has hinted on writing about the other "earlier generation" of Disney animators (a book that needs to be written) as well as coffee table books on individual animators such as Milt Kahl (which would be a real treat).A great read for animators and Disney enthusiasts.

It may say "lessons, techniques, and inspiration" but this is more a series of biographies than anything else. If anything, you will glean some teachings imperceptibly by studying the drawings and sequences inside. There are hints of how and why the 9 animated the way they did, but nothing explicitly instructional from them, for obvious reasons. That said, it's a good read, and the drawings are fun to look at... You may even remember the scene or short illustrated.

Over the past 25 years we've seen lots of books written by great fans of animation. This is the first done by a great animator who-- as a result of Divine Fate or cocked up luck-- arrived on the art scene just after the Golden Age of animation had sadly ended. Fortunately for us, Andreas sees himself as the chronicler of that great age, the age of the fabulous Nine Old Men. As is the case, I'm sure, with each of Andreas' hardcore fans, my copy of "The Nine Old Men" was pre-ordered the moment I discovered it was available---and I anticipate waiting at the door soon to greet it with the words, "Hello my new friend, welcome to Hawaii." But in the meantime, forgive me for jumping the gun somewhat to review Andreas' book based on the utterly remarkable "See Inside the Book" appearing above. "The 9 Old Men" appears to be a typical Deja production--- and by that I mean, a pure delight. Anyone who has visited Andreas' blog "Deja View" (itself one of the Wonders of the Modern World), knows this man/boy is possessed of the deepest appreciation for 2 dimensional animation ---so deep, in fact, that his live lectures come across as art events themselves ---somewhere in between poetry readings and improvisational theater. All that enthusiasm and affection is present in the pages of "The 9 Old Men" ---the meticulous selection of extraordinary artwork, the heartfelt exposition (spiced with Andreas' clever "asides"), the astute delineation of the process by which drawings are made to move (in both senses of that word). In 100 years, if anyone wonders what that thing called 2 dimensional animation was all about, all they'll need to do is consult this lovely gem of a book. Actually, as I think about it, Andreas has done something more than that. Something more beautiful. I read once that Gustave Dore, interrupted work on his long planned masterpiece, The Veil of Tears, to design a sculpture for the tomb of his friend and hero, Alexandre Dumas ---a magnificent D'artagnan, sword drawn, standing guard over Dumas' soul for all eternity. This is, in essence, what Andreas has done ---delaying completion of his own labor of love, the short film Mushka, to undertake a similar gesture of friendship to departed friends --only he's erected a safe resting place for 9 great souls, not just one.

I've been waiting forever for this book!! It's so beautiful! I was not disappointed with its content! Detailed a ketches of each artist and great, applicable background stories for any artist wanting to make themselves legendary 😉

I waited a good long time for this book to finally come out. I have been fascinated with Disney's 9 old men and their work for quite some time. I also have been following Andreas Deja's blog, also being a big fan of his storied life's work. I finally received my copy of the book and was not disappointed at all! What a great resource for fans of traditional 2D animation this book is! The insights of Andreas Deja are like no other, he knew these men and worked closely with most of them during his apprenticeship and career with Disney. If you are a fan of Disney, this book is a must have. If you know someone who aspires to me an animator, again this book is a must!!!

Wow! What a beautiful book! I love the way it is organized. Each chapter is a short biography of each animator and the characters they animated in various Disney films. This book is filled with beautiful photos and sketches. A "must have" for future animators. Thank you, Andreas, for writing this wonderful book!

Bill Bryson is at it again, he is back to telling history from an unique and witty perspective. With "At Home" Bryson wanders through his mid-1800s home and offers a bit about its history. I really do mean, "A bit" because while Bill Bryson begins in a particular room, such as the kitchen, dining rom, and etc. but he rarely stays there long. instead we are taken on tangets throughout history. We discover the meaning of words (such a "Chairman" and "Room & Board")that routinely pop-up in our daily lexicon... but when taken singularly... really don't make much sense. Why do we call it "The Boardroom" when it houses the CEO of a powerful company. Bill Bryson provided answers to this and countless other unique question.Final Verdict - while "At Home" really is not a history of the home, but it is a chance to indulge in 300+ of Bill Bryson wit and ecletic tid-bits of information.'4 1/2 stars - A must read for any Bryson fan!

Simply wonderful. I work at Winterthur Museum which is sometimes/often said to be the home of the world's foremost collection of American antiques. Guides were impassioned in their love for this book as it explained in great & wonderful detail everything that wonderful Winterthur is all about.AND it has broad appeal. Knowing that my engineer spouse would find some fascination in it I plugged it into the car's CD player when we were locked in its embrace for 8 hours...& he loved it. We talked about finer points raised in the book endlessly & thoroughly enjoyed both the book & what would ordinarily be a painfully boring trip we know all too well. For our next road trip I've got Bryson's book on 1927....I am just hoping he doesn't read it himself as he isn't the best representative of his own work. If you accept his Iowan birth, he comes across as stuffy & pretentious because of his diction which is full of British overtones having lived there so long. If you accept him as a citizen of the world, he can't honestly represent Des Moines. He should just shut up & write - a lot!

LOVE THIS BOOK! I enjoyed every single page! It's a big book and took me forever because I only had time for several pages each time I picked it up. Learned SO much about the history of homes and of England. I even learned that Christopher Columbus didn't discover North America. I always enjoy a Bill Bryson book. He's an amazing author and has a wonderful way with words. I recommend any of his books. If you want to discover where people used to sleep, the origins of glass, how people lived...you can discover all that and more in these pages.

This is the year I have become a big fan of Bill Bryson! The reporter who was born in Iowa and lived a good portion of his life in Great Britain is a wonderful tour guide to the mundane realities of life and science. In At Home he invites us into the Victorian vicarage where he lived for many years. We tour the home exploring each room such as the bathroom, bedroom, garden, dining room, cellar etc. We learn all about furniture, food consumption, clothing, crops, tea, salt, pepper and many other fascinating subjects. He traces the growth of industry and technology as the industrial revolution is examined. We learn much about how people in the past had to deal with disease, death, childbirth, education and existing from day to day. The past was a different country where life was often hard, brutal and short. Bryson is a man of erudition and wit who takes us into how ordinary people have lived in the past. This is a long book which is a great way to learn history and science in a painless way. Bill Bryson is a national treasure and you cannot go wrong in reading any of his books; this book published in 2010 is a gem!

I am really enjoying this book though I find I am forgetting what I've read almost as soon as I have read it! That is because there is SO much information in here! I enjoy Mr. Brysons writing, it is like listening to a charming and well read friend. If ind I prefer to own his books (rather than borrow from the library) so that I can jump in and out of the conversation or refer back to them. This one in particular is crammed full of the intriguing histories of all sorts of unnoticed daily spaces and objects. I feel as if I know my ancestors better after reading and therefore know myself a bit more. Quite a nice book if you like this sort of thing!

Bill Bryson never disappoints and this book is no exception. I read it several years ago, recommending it to everyone I knew. Such fascinating material for him to work with and he works with all material so well. When I saw it was available in an audio book I decided to buy it for an upcoming drive from Florida to New England. We enjoyed it very much. Nothing personal to the author but I know he's an American so I did find his British "ness" terminology a bit annoying. Having lived overseas for many years and knowing many people taught in British English, I full well know how easy it is to pick up their interesting terminology, still I found it somewhat difficult to put up with coming from a mostly American accent. . Overall though I enjoyed the audio version and I recommend it and the book itself highly.

Bill Bryson makes history very accessible with this easy-to-read and beautifully illustrated book. Ever wonder about the evolution of the modern home? This is your book! Bryson takes us through every room and thoroughly explains how they developed from the simple, one-room huts of our ancestors to the multi-room, multi-story homes of today. Everything about every room is delved into, from plumbing fixtures and appliances to tines on forks and table manners.
