An enjoyable read. Part 1 to part 3 are pre-war Paris, with a brief background of the heroine in England. I found it a bit slow but it gives a good picture of fashions and rivalries. Then follows Paris during the German Occupation and the meat of the story. Very well documented from the historical point of view. The fashions of that period are also very well documented. I remember the hats female family members used to wear! Many small details are just so right, talking about the heroine's daughter: "...remained a slight child and would probably always be so as rationing and shortages had stripped everyone's diet of proteins and essential fats." How true! Also a detail that not too many readers would catch, often overlook in historical fiction of that time: "...Gestapo black uniforms but more usually grey." There's a lengthy explanation for black vs grey. That was the official uniform, not to be confounded with the black leather trenchcoat the underlings wore when doing arrests.One reviewer said "Try ALL THE LIGHT WE CANNOT SEE or THE NIGHTINGALE for more realistic historical fiction." I am a student of WWII in Europe, and particularly in France as I was a small child living in Paris during the war and the Occupation. I'd like to point out that The Milliner's Secret's research is impeccable, whereas The Nightingale is full of glaring errors of life in France during the German Occupation despite the fact there is a great deal of information readily available. The story line is very good, too bad Kristin Hannah didn't spend enough time in research. It is unforgivable for a major author.All The Light We Cannot See is a moving novel, very well researched, I gave it five stars.The Milliner's Secret is well worth reading.

As an avid reader I enjoy most books I pick up, rarely do I find one I love, and even less often do I find one that I give five stars to. This story had me from the start and I actually couldn't put it down, truly I stayed up through the night reading finishing at six a.m. a truly gifted writer, such as Neg Evans, tells a story so beautifully that you not only visualize the people but the whole book is a movie in your mind, I saw every one of the characters, the locations and felt the emotions and truly understood the motivations and struggles of each person. After putting the book down I still found myself unable to rest, rehashing all the events and emotions and the turmoil of Paris before and during the occupation. Born storytellers are rare, I immediately went online and ordered every book by this author. Congratulations and thank you, I will not forget this story anytime soon if ever.

I would give this novel 5 stars but it was just so long and drawn out that I had to dock it a bit. Normally, I love a long, well-developed novel, but this was just so much back-and-forth by the main characters that it was hard to be completely immersed in it. Sometimes, the main characters are so wishy-washy that I had to put the book down and come back to it after taking a break.With all of that being said, the description of historical events and daily life in Paris at the time before and during WWII was very interesting and worth the long read. I just wish the author had taken out some events that weren't necessary for story development.

I purchased this book because my dentist told me to read something less dramatic. I loved the tittle and it seemed a good relaxing read and one my dentist would approve of. Needless to say, as you can see I give it a 5 star I really got hooked.The book starts of interestingly and sets the reader up for an interesting romantic Historical journey. The romance is with Paris hats and interesting woman and of course a personal one too.It was a very easy read that took you on different types of journeys with out any confusion. Lots of interesting characters and many likeable ones.With out too much gore it involved you in what went on in Paris when the Germans came to town. So if you would like a bit ok knowledge about Paris pre World War11 and during the occupations with out being hit in the face with too much reality, this book is for you.

As a lover of historic fiction, and also a lover of Paris, England and Germany, this book captured my interest from the beginning. I learned more about the devastation of the Nazi's in the life of Parisians during the second World War. The author's creative use of people to tell the story through a couple of main characters and the people with whom they interacted made it hard to put the book down. The young girl from a poor family with an abusive father had worked in a milliner's shop in England, escaping to Paris to became a couture milliner, making for a positive rather than negative story. There is some sexual content that is not explicit, a lot of mystery and intrigue, and an unusual love story.The author is a talented wordsmith.

The first two-three chapters of this book made me think there would be nothing original about this World War II book set in Paris. I was wrong. Once the book kicked into high gear, it stayed there. The main characters are flawed but likable, especially Dietrich. I cannot decide if it is first a love story and then about survival or if it is first about survival and then a love story. Maybe you can decide. Enjoy!

This story was a page turner. The main characters were well developed. Our heroine, Carolie, is proof that human behavior can be so different depending on what our situations in life are. She had deep emotional feelings, as well as the German Officer,Dietrich who was a heroic and sympathetic character.Both of these people were brave and loyal to themselves, but were able to still deeply love each other. Highly recommend this book.This story covers human emotions during war with characters that have different loyalties and beliefs. Even though they are conflicted, it doesn't prevent their depth of emotional commitment to each other, and the heroic acts that have to be committed for that love.

I ordered this book with the hopes of it helping me get a youth discipleship program off the ground. I am actually using the books tag line for our program: "Disciples making disciples." I am a big fan of Chan because he is very readable, biblically sound, and ministerially adept. I want to review the book in 3 sections; the first section will focus on the book as a whole, while sections 2 & 3 will focus on Strengths and weaknesses, and a conclusion respectively.OverviewMultiply begins with a well thought out section on how to use the book for discipleship. Chan and Beuving will follow their criteria here, throughout the book. Here's how Chan puts it: "The goals of the Multiply material are to help you understand Scripture and to give you the tools to disciple others in this process (Multiply, 9)." Chan offers sections covering weekly meetings, weekly videos, and weekly study guides. The book is divided into 5 parts; the first is living as a disciple maker, followed by living as the church, then how to study the bible, and finished with understanding the two testaments (Old and New). The last chapter is how to apply the material to the readers life.StrengthsIf you have ever read any Francis Chan books (Crazy Love, Forgotten God, Erasing Hell, etc.) you know they are very readable and deeply rooted in Scripture. Multiply is no different. In fact, this is probably one of his most theological books to date. Chan is also a master of the biblical story line, stretching from the Old testament to the New, and he is on full display in Multiply. His desire to direct his readers towards a closer relationship with Christ through a close study of scripture is unparalleled in a lot of famous Christian authors. I have read many Christian books, whether it be self-help or deep theology, and Chan's book is a refreshing medium between the two. Being a seminary student myself, this book will reach a wide range of reading abilities, while challenging the most skilled biblical exegetes and seminarians. More specifically, Chan's chapters on the Old and New Testaments are theological gold mines, as are his chapters on the church in our world today. What Chan does that is different from most Christian ministry books, is that he is personal and yet theologically challenging. He has changed the way books of this kind should be written from here on out.WeaknessesThe weaknesses worth mentioning from Chan's book are few and do not detract from the book, but the first one is the fact that the book does not give a clear plan on how to make disciples that make disciples. I was hoping to find some definitive answer to my questions on how to start a discipleship program, or how to teach youth students how to disciple other students, but Chan was lacking in this area. I finished the book understanding scripture better, but not the process of discipleship. The second weakness is that the chapters on how to study the bible were introductory at best. I was surprised by how poor and lacking these chapters were, despite the fact that Chan is a wonderful exegete of scripture. He offers nothing new on actually how to study the bible, but rather he offers the reasons why we study the bible.ConclusionChan's book is an easy and useful read for anyone in ministry. If you are looking for an in-depth study of discipleship or a new outlook on how to study the bible, this book is NOT for you. However, if you are looking to better understand the grand narrative of the bible and the churches mission, then I would recommend this book to you.

Of all the books I could recommend any Christian, it'd be this oneCause it's about the walk! Following Jesus! WholeheartedlyWe need more spiritual food about the walk, that's what we struggle with the most. A lot of us anyway. We need to be confronted by these things & reflect on them, pray to grow in these areasThe Lord is good!

The beauty of multiply is not in its unique approach to discipleship, its discovery of a hidden facet of training up strong followers of Jesus, or even in its back to basics approach. The beauty of the book is found in how easy it is to repeat with others.One of the other reviewers, who was basically positive, mentioned that this was no different from Sunday school curriculum. In a lot of ways, he is correct. The difference is that this isn't dependent on a lay-leader or "Christian professional" to use. If used properly, it can be a powerful tool in the hands of your everyday church attender.How we are trained is often the way that we will train others. If you were trained in a Sunday school, than you will, most likely, bring your neighbor to church and let someone else train him up or tell him about Jesus. With multiply, you could (and should), have your disciplee begin discipling someone on the first part of the book before you are even done going through it with them. They should, in turn, encourage the person that they are discipling to do the same. This has the potential to create a culture of discipleship whereby it spreads as a way of life instead of a forced program. That, I think, is the true power of the book. You don't need to reinvent the wheel and write your own discipleship study or train 10 guys on how to do discipleship. The book provides all the tools necessary (especially when coupled with the website) to equip someone to disciple another person. Even if the person you are discipling isn't done with the book, they are equipped to wrestle through the first few sections. By the time that you have finished going through it with them, you are in a position to monitor and assist them as they go through it with someone else. You learn by teaching/doing, and they do the same. Doing this doesn't pigeonhole discipleship as a job for the professionals, the pastors, or the teachers - it puts discipleship in the hands of every person.Other Pros:The book covers the basics of what people need to do know about the nature of discipleship (what it means to follow Jesus), the Bible, and the church. Right off the bat, I have to give kudos to Chan for including a section on the church. One of the downfalls of so many discipleship materials produced over the last few decades is a glaring omission of anything related to the church.All the material is available for free on their website, multiplymovement. This is comforting to me because it gives proof to the point that they aren't trying to make money by getting as many books purchased as possible (with a discipleship method reliant on their book). You can download the pdf chapters and print them out at your leisure, watch leadership videos, and even stream Chan reading his book to you - all for free. Incredible.Too Long Didn't Read Version: Multiply is great because it puts discipleship on the bottom shelf, not by diminishing the depth of content, but by making it accessible to everyone - not just pastors/leaders. I truly believe that this could be a discipleship tool that anyone could use to disciple another person with little preparation beforehand.

I have to admit: I read this so high because I read it in his voice. This book actually seems like two different ones. Both are good on their own but the transition isn’t well and I understand what he was doing with both sections but they don’t talk to each other very good. The first section is on discipleship the second is an overview of redemptive history. I agree that it’s important for every disciple to have but that’s not the theme of the book. The theme of the book is supposed to be multiplication.

This book has so much more info than I expected. Very very happy!!

What a great book! Even though it is a college textbook, it is a super resource for an amateur fossil hunter like me. I can't stop reading it!

This is a great introductory text and reference for experienced but seeking paleo students. Photography is adequate as are the drawings. Very good book for energizing confused geology buffs.

Oh my my, oh hell yes! If Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a band that lights your fire, you have to read this biography, which comes out Tuesday, November 10. Petty made it big just as I graduated from high school. By the time my first-born entered elementary school, I had a backseat full of little kids who bounced their heads along to the unquestionable rhythm of his music playing on the radio. Petty tried school several times, but English (oh yeah, poetry right?) and art were the only courses that held any magic for him. He had one marketable skill, and unlimited ambition. As it happens, that was plenty.If you want to read his story, this is the place to get it. Zanes has filled it with lots of vignettes, some of which are very funny. When a particular episode or situation is remembered differently by different musicians, producers and what have you, he tells what each has to say.What you won’t find much here is his family, and that is oddly appropriate. Petty himself recognizes that when a guy is a professional musician doing the album cycle—write the songs, record the songs, make whatever changes need to get made, release the album, then go on tour to promote the album, and come back and do it all over again—family just gets left out. His first wife Jane developed some serious problems with chemical dependency and mental illness, and he experienced serious guilt over leaving their two daughters with her, but what else was there to do? Taking them on the road wouldn’t exactly be a healthy environment. Even if he quit making music, who’d pay the bills then? And so it went. So his elder daughter Adria puts in her two cents here and there, but mostly this is a story of Tom’s life as a musician. But reading about Jane’s addiction issues and then watching this video gave me chills (not great for small children, if you have them near you):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aowSG...There aren’t really any slow parts to this biography; the least interesting to me were the various bands he formed or joined prior to his success as a soloist and then as the leader of the Heartbreakers.That much said, this is the first, the VERY first time this reviewer (and all the reviews on my blog site are mine) has ever gone back to read a galley a second time before reviewing it, not because I didn’t get enough notes (oy, the notes!) but because it was just so much fun to follow Petty’s music and read the stories behind the songs.If you don’t like Tom Petty, I question why you are even still reading my review. But if you’re a fan, this is a great bio to read, intimate without being tawdry or prurient, carefully researched, tightly organized. I am glad I didn’t have to edit it, because he probably had a mountain of extra information that was either cut or not included in the first place. But from anyone that loves good rock and roll, it’s uplifting and absorbing.The ultimate holiday gift for someone close to you that loves Petty’s music would be his giant discography, the Traveling Wilburys DVD and CD, perhaps the documentary (which is on my own Christmas list), and this book. Rock and roll forever!

I'll risk sounding like a loser and just admit that I wasn't super into Tom Petty before reading this book. Sure, I know (and enjoy) his big hits like anyone else, but not much beyond that. I basically started this book with a clean slate, more curious than anything else, and really just looking to learn.Well, after finishing the biography, I can say with all honesty that I am now a legitimate Tom Petty fan. I have enormous respect for the man. I really had no idea he had been through so much. I never knew his father used to beat the sh*t out of him for years--but then turned around and mooched off of his son's success for the rest of his life. It never registered for me how hard Petty worked to get where he is. Truly, his work ethic is admirable. While it seems that his family life suffered for it, I am still a bit in awe that he has remained so focused and determined to succeed after decades in the business. It's respectable. And yet, despite the fact that he has been so successful, he's also surprisingly humble. He says many times that he was never in it for the money. He always dreamed of living comfortably, sure--paying rent on time, etc., etc.--but he never got sidetracked by a huge payday. His heart was always in the music.That became even more obvious to me when I went back and really listened to his music. While reading the book, I played most of the tracks author Zanes highlighted in the book. And I felt like I heard something new in these songs. I noticed the layers to the lyrics and the creativity in the sounds of American Girl, Listen to Her Heart, Insider, You Don't Know How It Feels, and others. It was just crazy to me how much I got out of these songs after I knew a bit more about the artist.One last thing...I also want to mention how impressed I was by Petty's oldest daughter, Adria. While reading, I could tell that she had experienced a lot of pain, especially after watching her parents divorce and then having to essentially raise her younger sister. But she seemed very strong to me--and surprisingly insightful. I looked forward to hearing her perspective on her dad. She added something special to this story.At any rate, I loved this book. I don't even normally like biographies that much--just because they tend to be so dry, ugh--but Zanes managed to write this one with a lot of heart. I finished it and felt legitimately connected to Petty and his music. It was a wonderful read.

- WOW -....is all I've got to say....my man sure did put on a brave face considering the long life of agony he was suffering - I know many of you may find that hard to believe - but just read this book - and there's a lot of parallels with Tom Petty and every Boba musician I have ever met in the last 50 years...including YOURS TRULY...!!Some of the parts had me baffled and confused thinking I was reading my own biography...!!!!If you are any kind of Tom Petty fan, or American musician, even if yours was a garage band, and you never made it to the top of the mountain like Tom, you've got to read this book!!!...you will laugh and cry all at the same time...and kudos to Warren Zanes (Del Fuegos - BOSTON BABY!!!!) for layin' it all down so well...even that perspective added so much familiarity to this story for me....I grew up cruisin' the same places and listening to the same radio as Warren..After reading this, even though I never met the man, I feel like I lived on the same street as Tom Petty....I guess I did.....Main Street, America....this is as American a story as it gets kids....get you some!

With Tom Petty suddenly passing, I turned to this biography for a sense of closure.As a life long fan , I thought I knew most of his history, but found the depth of knowledge in this biography far beyond what I had read before.It is a very impressive book, and hard to put down.I really feel a deeper understanding of his music after reading this, and would highly recommend this to anybody interested in musical history and Tom Petty in particular.
