Letters to a Young Poet (A Penguin Classics Hardcover), by Rainer Maria Rilke

Review

“For this reason, my dear Sir, the only advice I have is this: to go into yourself and to examine the depths from which your life springs; at its source you will find the answer to the question of whether you have to write. Accept this answer as it is,without seeking to interpret it. Perhaps it will turn out that you are called to be an artist. Then assume this fate and bear it, its burden and its greatness, without ever asking after the rewards that may come from outside. For he who creates must be a world of his own and find everything within himself and in the natural world that he has elected to follow. [. . .] Whatever happens, your life will find its own paths from that point on, and that they may be good, productive and far-reaching is something I wish for you more than I can say.” —Rainer Maria Rilke “I cannot think of a better book to put into the hands of any young would-be poet, as an inspirational guide to poetry and to surviving as a poet in a hostile world.” —Harry Fainlight, The Times (London) “I read Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet every day.” —Lady Gaga

Would give this a "0" stars if possible. This vendor is NOT selling the publication of Rilke's book, but has gotten the text and laid it out (probably with MS Word, horrible for layout) and done a cheap printing of it. Am I going to return it? Probably not, only because it's more effort to pack it, take it to the P.O. and mail. But I'm very angry about this book, I do publication layout professionally, and am an editor, so the extra spaces between words, the dropped punctuation, and visually awful layout is an abomination to Rilke's work. I know how they did it: they stripped the text out of an e-book, put it into Word and left-aligned, never proofed it, and sent it to China to be printed. Monstrous. Never buy from this outfit.

Whatever kind of writer or creative artist you are, Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a voice worth listening to. The letters were written in the early 1900s when Rilke was about 30 years old. He wrote ten letters to a young poet named Franz Kappus, offering not only advice but a philosophy on how to cultivate the creative spirit. As a fiction author with three novels out, I often get discouraged. We writers know that art and struggle go hand and hand. I’ve read all the pep blogs about following your passion and keeping the faith, recognizing the common Van Gogh blues, blah, blah, blah. Rilke’s book is such a refreshing look at why a person writes at all. He addresses doubt, loneliness vs solitude, love, and patience. This is probably one of the most impressive of books I’ve read on this subject. The thoughts in this little 100-page book is a true source and one to keep on the night stand. I love to open a page at random and see what Rilke has to say to me for the day. Page 61 told me this morning that “We must embrace struggle. Every living thing conforms to it. Everything in nature grows and struggles in its own way, establishing its own identity, insisting on it at all cost, against all resistance.” This book is for any artist who wants inspiration on how to live as an artist.

Louth's translation of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet is a mediocre translation, does not match that of M.D. Herter Norton's (Letters to a Young Poet), whose quintessential translation must be the standard for all others of Rilke's work. You cannot see it the following pages in the Look Inside feature, but the following famous passage in Letter 8 is an excellent example. "Mr. Kappus," the young poet, might as well be us, and the passage can be read without the words "dear Mr. Kappus" and stands alone -- at least in the M.D. Herter Norton translation.M.D. Herter Norton's translation (Letters to a Young Poet), Letter 8, reads: "How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are the beginning of all peoples? The myths about dragons that, at the last moment, turn into princesses. Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, who are only waiting to see us, once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is, in its deepest being, something helpless that wants help from us. So, you must not be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up before you, larger than any you have ever seen. If a restiveness like light and cloud-shadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening to you. That life has not forgotten you. That it holds you in its hand. It will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any agitation, any pain, any melancholy, since you do really do not know what these states are working upon you? ..."Compare this to Charlie Louth's translation of this same passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet):"How can we forget those ancient myths found at the beginnings of all peoples? The myths about the dragons who at the last moment turn into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses, only waiting for the day when they will see us handsome and brave? Perhaps everything terrifying is deep down a helpless thing that needs our help. So, dear Mr. Kappus, you shouldn't be dismayed if a sadness rises up in front of you, greater than any you have ever seen before; or if a disquiet plays over your hands and over all your doings like light and cloud-shadow. You must think that something is happening with you; that life has not forgotten you; that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why should you want to exclude from your life all unsettling, all pain, all depression of spirit, when you don't know what work it is these states are performing within you? ... "Note that word order in changed in by Louth to give a different meaning, and this is often the case. Also, compare to Stephen Mitchell's translation of the passage in Letter 8 (Letters to a Young Poet (Modern Library) and (Letters to a Young Poet):"How could we forget those ancient myths that stand the beginning of all the races, the myths about dragons that are at the last moment transformed into princesses? Perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act, just once, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is, in its deepest essence, something helpless that wants our love. So you mustn't be frightened, dear Mr. Kappus, if a sadness rises up in front of you, larger than any you have ever seen; if an anxiety, like light and cloud-shadows, moves over your hands and over everything you do. You must realize that something is happening to you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand and will not let you fall. Why to you want to shut out of your life any uneasiness, any misery, any depression. since after all you don't know what work these conditions are doing inside you?...."Really, "that wants our love"? Our LOVE? No reason for this translator's license, none at all. Mitchell's translation likewise strips the Letters of poetry, and, of note, his introduction to the Letters is somewhat bizarre. If one goes further back in this letter, to Rilke's discussion of solitude, the demarcation between the beautiful and the mediocre translation is equally clear. I find M.D. Herter Norton's translation by far the most beautiful, poetic and meaningful, although reading other translations can add to the reader's understanding, or else, show the reader which translation speaks to him.On the other hand, here is an opportunity to compare, free of charge, three translations. I have chosen to confine myself to the translation by M.D. Herter Norton's of Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, since I don't want to interrupt the flow of reading as I study these great letters, and feel it is best to choose one. It is a shame the M.D. Herter Norton translation is not currently in print in hardcover. Still, there are used copies to be found and I'd rather buy several paperback copies of Norton's than have a nice looking hardcover of a mediocre translation.

I loved it! It reminded of the literature I had to read many years ago, when I was in college. Notice I wrote the verb "had". I am feeling a little guilty of not appreciating the works I had to read, then, and puzzled, by how I admire them now. The content of these letters are timeless. "It is perhaps no use now to reply to your actual words; for what can I say about your disposition to doubt or about your inability to bring your outer and inner life into harmony, or about anything else that oppresses you-: it is always what I have said before; always the wish that you might be able to find patience enough in yourself to endure, and a single-heartedness enough to believe; that you might win increasing trust in what is difficult, and in your solitude among other people. And for the rest, let life happen to you. Believe me:life is right, at all events".I think it reads like a prayer. I have no knowledge of the German Language, but if this translation conjures this kind of emotion, imagine the impact it should have on the reader that reads the original.Thank you!

My wife lovvvvves dogs--and not just our dog (though he gets special royalty status)--AND Mary Oliver. So when I bumped into this book, I knew I had to get it for her right away. And she's delighted with the book. Even I (also a lover of dogs--though less appreciative of poetry) was charmed--and more important--touched by MO's words and the poems in this slim volume (which include both previously published and new works).Mary Oliver is actually one of the few poets who does move me--and obviously I'm not alone. Probably some experts and academics will scoff, but to me she has both a delicacy and down-to-earth quality that offer grace so even someone like myself, who might be a bit tone deaf to the mystery and romance of more obscure works, really sees/listens (

The 11 pen & ink illustrations are lovely. The 35 "Dog Songs and One Essay" are tributes to the individual dogs Mary Oliver has known and loved. But none of them touched my heart like a wonderful dog poem by Dalia Shevin, titled,In My Good Death:I will find myself in high summer grass. The humming shock of the golden light. And I will hear them before I see themand know right away who is bounding across the field to meet me.All my good dogs will come then, their wet noses bumping against my palms, their hot panting, their rough, faithful tongues.Their eyes young and shiny again. The dense scruff of their fur,The unspeakable softness of their bellies, their velvet ears against my cheeks.I will bend to them, my face covered with their kisses,My hands full of them.In the grass I will let them knock me down.".

I love Mary Oliver's poetry, but this is the best!!! My best friends are my 5 4-legged companions and this book of poems about the beloved dog is amazing!!! Some of her poems in this book brought tears to my eyes while making my laugh too. Her work is amazing and simple and just lovely. If you love poetry and dogs, go for it.... you will not be disappointed. I read the whole book aloud to my dogs and I know they savored every moment too.

I was really looking forward to Mary Oliver's Dog Songs, and hoped I could share the book with my dog loving husband and son in law... no such luck. Not bad, and the illustrations nearly made up for my disappointment with the poems. I guess it's just I expect so MUCH from Mary Oliver, and these are only OK. Cute pictures, though.

Poetry speaks to me. I like the standard poets, Plath, Heaney, Auden, Housman, Dickinson, and the full canon of must-read-because-you're-an-English-major, Sir Thomas Wyatt, John Donne, John Milton, Percy Shelley. For pure love and enjoyment, I turn to Mary Oliver. When I found out her new book would be published in October, I pre-ordered it. How could I resist a book named DOG SONGS?I read these poems aloud to my dogs. Oliver reminds us that our dogs live in the moment, but they also feel our emotions. We know when we love a dog that its lifespan will probably be shorter than our own, and we must come to terms with the grief. In this volume, Oliver's poems give the various dogs, some hers, some from the neighborhood, voices. They do speak to us.Her Percy poems (Percy now deceased) are magical. She says, "For often I see his shape in the clouds/and this is/a continual blessing." I look for my dogs in the clouds too. I know this feeling.Other poems celebrate dogs running leash-free, dogs making friends, dogs sharing their finds (dead fish), the dog's adoration of his human: "Percy, meanwhile,/leans against me and gazes up into my face. As though I were just as wonderful/as the perfect moon."If you love a dog, pick up these poems. They will help you celebrate your love, and when that someday comes, grieve the loss. Another favorite line, "Tell me you love me, he says./"Tell me again."Yes, Mary Oliver, I will tell my dogs I love them. And I love you too.

PreS-Gr 2–These four books are intended to give children basic scientific information about the featured topic. The double-page illustrations depicting the flora and fauna of the books' settings are rich and warm, but the computer-generated people look stiff and are a bit jarring against the more realistic backgrounds. Two children's exploration of and conversation about each topic inevitably lead to the end, where readers can find a related craft/activity. For the many early childhood classrooms in which all aspects of autumn are a part of the curriculum, these titles will be welcome, child-friendly additions.–Maggie Chase, Boise State University, ID. Great book to spark conversations with children about the apple season. This book is more of a story. It is not able the life cycle of the apple tree. It is a fiction story, great as a mentor text for sparking ideas of writing about a trip to the apple orchard.

The story is dull, the quality of the printed book pages duller. The cover gives a clue; each page is almost sepia infused and dreary in lack of color. How a holiday with a color palette with bright orange pumpkins and big red apples gets such a gloomy illustration treatment surprised and annoyed me. Read once with my 4 year old and moved on to other more entertaining and brightly illustrated reads.

What I needed

I loved the book and used it to teach Apple unit at scchool.

I ordered these group books for a reading. For a lower second grade lexile, this book was perfect. It is informational text on what to do with apples. It even has a craft in the back! This is a must have for a classroom library or harvest celebration.

Great book

My six-year-old and I love these fall-themed books illustrated by Nadine Takvorian. The glorious hues of fall are beautifully-rendered in the illustrations that show the activities that go on during fall. In Apples, Apples Everywhere! young children are introduced to the process of apple harvesting. A young boy and girl stop at an apple orchard and discover people picking apples off trees, discover how apple harvesting is done, and learn about the delights of apples, i.e. apple pies, apple cider, and even apple bobbing! There's a list of further reading at the back of the book, with a glossary of terms. In addition, there is even instructions on how to make a dried apple wreath which is certainly something fun to do with a young child. This would make an excellent fall read with children ages 4-8.

I think this will be a great book for a nine year old boy and His three old year sister. I will be traveling to NH in two weeks and We will go applepicking together. I 'ordered' the boy to help His sister with the words if She can't read them yet. Did I do right ? What do You think ?

Sweet Liar is a sexy short book. The story was about Audrey, a younger woman and Dylan, an older man from London (who doesn’t love a British accent?) This couple was magnetic with tremendous chemistry. The story had a wonderful plot and superb characters. I loved how strong and assertive Audrey was. I also liked that Dylan was level-headed; it made him so much more sexier and appealing. Thank you Laurelin Paige! I can’t wait to read Sweet Fate!

Dang....Laurelin has really outdone herself this time with a hot age-gap romance. She knows all the buttons to push as Audrey tries to seduce Dylan - who is 19 years older than she is. But she is definitely the pursuer - believing in kismet, and trying to get him to believe it too.I can’t wait for the conclusion!

Another winner in the Dirty Universe!!! Sweet Liar, book one of the Sweet duet, is just so good!!! It has everything I have come to love in a Laurelin Paige book....hot, sexy alpha? Check. Strong, independent love interest? Check! Witty banter? Check! Hot and steamy sexy times? Check, check and check!!! Dylan Locke is one of the partners of Reach, Inc., in their London office. Yes, he's British, so on top of being hot and sexy, he's got that accent going for him. He's 43 and 23 year old Audrey is attracted to him. I loved watching the way Audrey lured(see funny banter) him in. Oh these two are just perfect for each other. I just loved this book and can't wait for the second book.

Laurelin Paige is a brilliant writer who mesmerizes us with her sensual stories of desire and passion that we can’t get enough of. The anticipation of each new book release is almost too much too bear.“Sweet Liar” is an intriguing, spellbinding, intricately woven montage of pure desire between Dylan and Audrey. She believes in true love, soulmates, happy endings, instant attraction and complete devotion. Dylan knows that he shouldn’t want her, but he cannot stop the feelings from bubbling up inside of him. Avery is taboo: too young, too innocent, too starry eyed for a hardened man such as himself. She sees the world through rose colored glasses and he has a cold heart and does not believe in love. What could they possibly offer each other? As I turned each page of “Sweet Liar” I became caught up in the cat and mouse sparring between Dylan and Audrey. They are like fire and ice; she is sunlight and pure, and he is dark and brooding. Their connection is volatile and akin to a match lighting a candle; it only intensifies as it gets hotter. Dylan and Audrey’s romance continues in “ Sweet Fate”, part two of the Dirty Sweet Duet. Will their dalliance withstand any obstacles they may encounter?

The craving, the want and the magnetic pull that Laurelin Paige excels at in every book is just a strong with Sweet Liar.Aubrey is young and lacking the sexual experiences she craves. She wants to learn all she can from someone with more experience, someone who can teach her the things she wants to know about her sex life and what she wants out of a sexual relationship. Dylan is older, a gentlemen and sexy as hell, a man who has been burned before, he has no interest in love and kismet but Aubrey has her sights set on him to learn the finer sexy things in life.A short quick read that packs a punch. Fun and flirty, sexy and a little naughty, you will be clenching your thighs together in anticipation. The Dirty Universe just got a lot more interesting and Dylan Locke will melt your panties.

Sweet Liar is another sexy read by Laurelin Paige! It amazes me what she can write in such a short amount of pages. I had to fan myself after reading this steamy book. I need book 2 right now! I'm dying to know how Dylan and Audrey's story ends.Dylan and Audrey have chemistry in spades despite their age gap. I love how bold and confident Audrey is! I love how Dylan tries to be a gentleman with Audrey. However, what I love most is his struggle as he fights his attraction to the much younger woman. As hard as he fights it, there is just something about her that he couldn't resist. This book is flirty, sexy and seductive!

Dylan is divorced, has a teenage son, a she-devil of an ex, and is definitely NOT looking for a relationship. I felt like he was setting himself up for what came next. And what came next was Audrey. Audrey is young - like twenty years too young for Dylan. But the instant they meet - CHEMISTRY - the explosive kind. And Audrey is one person that Dylan can't quite ignore. Especially with such huge differences - the age factor and the fact that they reside on two different continents. Can just one night satisfy them? Can they can move on with their lives, separate and unaffected?Dylan Locke. Business man. Experienced. Living God! Oh my stars ... I am in lust with Dylan! Once again, I've been brought a book that has a character from a previous series and I need to play catch up. So worth it! What I time I will have playing it ... catch up that is. This book was sweet, sexy and had the makings of an epic love story that tugs at the heart strings! I can't wait for it's conclusion in Sweet Fate.*** I received an exclusive ARC of this book ***

How can a man resist a woman twenty years his junior when she asks him to teach her things only an experienced man knows. In Sweet Liar, Audrey is going to give Dylan a run for his money. She a believer in fairytales, and he's a non-believer. He loved a woman once and she broke his heart. Can Audrey show him that fairytales really do come true.Laurelin Paige has written another page-turning book that keeps you glued to your seat. It's fun, it's daring and a little bit sexy. I can't wait for book 2 in this duet.

I have Interfaith devotions at my house monthly. I try to use scriptures from all the major religions, but they can be difficult to find. I'm so glad I came across this little books. My friends who have attended have commented very favorably on the selections from this book. Very nice.

Love this book. Not only is it filled with beautiful prayers, but they are divided up by religious beliefs. There are explanations of how the religious group feels about prayer and a bit about their belief system. A way to choose a lovely prayer for an event or celebration, and perhaps learn a bit about where it came from.

Well worth the price. Interesting and complete with many prayers or translations of prayers to help any minister.

Quotations from Indegenous peoples as well as many different religious traditions.

A lovely selection of poems from individual religions to the universally spiritual.

I loved this little book, but because of the length and content, I only gave it 4 stars. I was hoping that it would be more of a resource than what it really is. Each faith has a few pages and not all religions and/or faith traditions are included (which was also disappointing!). I liked the content, just wish there was more.

I bought this not for its theology, but for the eclectic collection of prayers. I thank the author for it.

As an inter-faith chaplain, I consider this to be a crucial book on my shelf for an inclusive ministry.
