About the Author

Elsie R. Vergara, Sc.D., OTR, FAOTA, received a bachelor of science degree in physical and occupational therapy in 1968 and a master of public health degree in maternal and infant health in 1977 from the University of Puerto Rico. Her interest in neonatal care emerged during her clinical experiences in Puerto Rico. These experiences took place when major medical and technological advances in neonatal practice were occurring in the United States. Dr. Vergara moved to Boston to pursue a doctoral degree that would expand on the knowledge and skills in neonatal intervention that she had acquired through intensive self-study and her master's-level experiences. Dr. Vergara received training from respected neonatal care scholars such as Dr. Kevin Nugent and Dr. Heidelise Als, and in 1987 she earned a doctor of science degree from Boston University. Following the reauthorization of the Education of the Handicapped Act Amendments of 1986 (PL 99-457) as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1991 (PL 102-119), states began to develop educational resources and activities to prepare personnel to comply with the mandates of the law. Dr. Vergara obtained a 3-year grant from the state of Florida to design and establish a statewide training program to prepare neonatal and early intervention physical and occupational therapists. To accomplish this task, she created a series of self-study materials that the American Occupational Therapy Association published in 1993 as a two-volume set titled Foundations for Practice in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Early Intervention: A Self-Guided Manual. In 1993, Dr. Vergara was inducted into the American Occupational Therapy Association's Roster of Fellows for her contributions to the enhancement of the profession through the development and promotion of educational programs in early intervention. Dr. Vergara's interest in infusing a family-centered, developmentally supportive perspective into the training and service delivery of neonatal personnel has challenged her to conduct similar training programs in countries such as Mexico and Honduras. She plans to establish two training centers in Mexico to provide ongoing preparation of neonatal personnel. Rosemarie Bigsby, Sc.D., OTR, FAOTA, earned a bachelor of science degree in occupational therapy from Western Michigan University in 1974, an advanced master of science degree in occupational therapy from Boston University in 1980, and a doctor of science degree from Boston University in 1994. She holds a Board Certification in Pediatrics from the American Occupational Therapy Association and in 1993 was named a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association for her contributions to the practice of occupational therapy with infants and children. Dr. Bigsby's experience as a pediatric occupational therapist spans three decades, during which she has worked in a variety of settings as a clinician, supervisor, and consultant. When she began her career, sensory integration and early intervention were emerging practice arenas. The potential for applying principles of sensory integrative theory to practice in early intervention captured her interest, prompting her to advance her education and to eventually engage in research with preterm infants and their families. In the 1980s, following her graduate studies, she became Chief Occupational Therapist at Meeting Street School (now called Meeting Street Center), a center in East Providence, Rhode Island, for school-age children with multiple disabilities. She participated on the multidisciplinary diagnostic team as well as the Parent Program for Developmental Management, one of the first early intervention programs in the country, which was founded by the late Dr. Eric Denhoff. In 1990, she began her doctoral research under the mentorship of Dr. Barry Lester, focusing on physiologic and behavioral indicators of self-regulation in preterm infants. Since that time, she has contributed to a number of grant-funded research studies as a trainer and consultant. Dr. Bigsby has practiced in the NICU at Women & Infants' Hospital since 1992 in the combined roles of therapist, educator, and researcher. She was instrumental in translating the model for psychosocial and developmental support to NICU infants and their families—first described by Dr. Elaine C. Meyer, Dr. Lester, and colleagues — from a research protocol to a clinical service that is provided by the Infant Development Center team. Dr. Bigsby has authored numerous journal articles and book chapters and coauthored the American Occupational Therapy Association guidelines for NICU practice and the Posture and Fine Motor Assessment of Infants (The Psychological Corporation, 2000). She also has served as a contributor to the Neonatal Network Neurobehavioral Scale (NNNS) (Lester & Tronick, forthcoming from Paul H. Brookes Publishing Co.). Dr. Bigsby's research focuses on motor development, behavioral cues, physiologic regulation, and feeding in early infancy. She has been invited to speak both nationally and internationally, and each year, she teaches several 2-day multidisciplinary workshops on assessment and intervention in the NICU.

It's a good book for profesionals working at NICU, with a lot of information about the childrens medical conditions, the parents'point of view, but with only few especific information about intervention for an occupational therapist.I recomended for my colegues.

Great book

I liked this book and the material was relevant and essential for entering into the NICU. The book focused on many issues that are prevalent in the NICU such as stresses to the infants( ex. environmental) or issues that involve family-centered participation in the NICU.

This book was purchased for our early intervention department. It is filled with excellent information and techniques in working with babies born prematurely. Well written and easy to understand the terminology used in the NICU.

Nice big size but the story isn't really a story. I thought it would have some stories from the smaller books in it, but instead there are huge images and just bios on each of the dogs, etc. Nice for any little Paw Patrol fan but the lack of actual story will not keep me engaged to read it over and over again as a parent.

If you own the book "Pups to the Rescue" do not buy this book. My 3 year old son was so disappointed when we found out this is almost the exact same story with just a few words changed here and there. I'm going to return this book if I can.

There is NO story, only a description of each pup, Ryder & the lookout. I wish we could have seen the book before buying it. My 2 yr old Paw Patrol obsessed son is so disappointed. We bought the Pups to the Rescue book and the words are the same as this book but at least that book has stickers included... and it was half the price of this one! Don't buy this book, buy the other one with stickers or The Itty-Bitty Kitty Rescue book (my son LOVES it and we are getting ready to read it now)!!!

Bogus content. Big Book of Paw Patrol doesn't make me think it is going to be just a 'meet the characters' intro without a single adventure or story. If I saw this in the store, I'd have flipped through and known better but it is misleading, the description online. Buy one of the other soft covers on here or small golden books that have actual series episodes or stories. This is like zero content and if your kids KNOW the characters they don't need it.

It's not a story book. I thought it had stories from the paw patrol episodes like the Little Red Rescue book collection which my son loves or the story time collection of the Thomas the Tank Engine! This is just a big book introducing the characters. Not a story book and very thin! We don't like it at all!

I was surprised to find this on my Kindle, then realized my 3 year old grandson had bought it while I wasn't looking! He loves Paw Patrol, and at $1.99, that's not much to make him happy. I will be shutting the internet off before I leave him alone with it again, though.

The printed book was put into the binding upside-down. I was going to give this item as a gift at a kids party but I’m embarrassed to do so now after I opened it up.

My son wanted this so I got it for him. HE loves it - but it is just basically a list of the characters and what they do which I'm not impressed about. It's also not that big of a book being it's titled "The Big book of paw patrol"

This book is mainly just descriptions of the characters. I thought it would be a few stories, but it's just a larger little golden book. The thickness is about the same as the little golden books. Cute book, but I was imagining it'd be a thicker book. If I was purchasing again I would buy another actual little golden book, so I'd get a better story. Though the price and shipping was very good!

The book is written but it was disappointing with no state road or local foot maps to help pinpoint locations.

This book is good for residents and tourists alike.It has many quirky and fun things that you can do and see. One of them being "The Old Man of the Valley" in Shelburne, which hasn't fallen! Another face in granite!It categorizes what to do by county, so you can specifically look up yours if you don't feel like going far, or if you were going in that direction. It doesn't just scatter things.

This will be part of my summer travel package. Making short days trips or weekends is what its all about this year!

Lo leí a los 20 años y me gustó. Ahora, despues de 35 años, casada con un Mexicano, entendí mucho más. Porque en la familia de mi esposo hay fantasmas, tesoro enterrado, santos, revolucionarios y todos los detailles sabrosos que incluye Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Mi profesor decía que lo que Don Quixote de la Mancha es para la cultura española, 100 años es para la cultura latina. Para mi, 100 años tiene la mejor terminación de cualquier libro que he leido. Que lo disfruten!

If there were more stars, I would give this book more. Garcia Marquez's writing is just exquisite -- just study the opening paragraphs of this book.He captures the atmosphere of this Caribbean part of Colombia masterfully using his magic realism style. It did help that I have a wonderful Spanish teacher who explained the connections and allusions to me. A visit to the region only intensified my love for this novel. I have a hard time though deciding whether I like Cien Años better or Love in the Times of Cholera. they are my two favorite books and I have read both several times in Spanish and English. It's even better in Spanish.

Fue un poco dificil al principio de seguir los personajes con el mismo nombre pero sobre todo es muy interesante como la novela se desarrolla, me gusta la creatividad y estilo de Garcia Marquez y es chistoso, comedia latina. Aun no acabo de leer toda la novela pero quiero commentar que la recomiendo mucho. Me recuerdo de todos mis viajes a sudamerica mientras leo la historia de cien anos de soledad. El libro me lleva ahi y Garcia Marquez pinta una imagen muy clara de la cultura de america latina. Es de veras el Don Quijote de Sudamerica! :D

Colors, characters, animals, objects are there for a reason, not just as embellishment.This is a remarkable master piece, as few in the modern literature. Make your self a favor and read it.

This is a haunting book, one I read years ago and recently bought again as a Christmas gift for someone who hadn't heard of it. It really is a book everyone should read. Back during the Greek Civil War, a family was living in the remote mountains while their father had gone to the U.S. to earn money and had been sending it home to the family. The rebels were drafting young children to fight, and Eli was determined to get her children out of the country. They become immigrants, adjusting to a new life in a new country where they do not speak the language, do not know the customs, have never seen a light bulb or a flush toilet. The determination and efforts of this family to make a new life and to be successful citizens will be etched into your memory. It is one of my all time favorite non-fiction books. The ending will have you staying up all night to finish it.

Very intimate and engaging story that leaves no room for anything short of applause.Gage's non fiction work does read like fiction (engaging/engrossing/emotional), yet it is pure non-fiction and supported by exhaustive investigative journalism. Where the book could have been dry, his research and writing brings the characters alive and while you know Eleni's fate early on, you could not help but continue to read the book and admire her resolve and dedication in saving her family.Gage wisely omits his opinions/thoughts throughout most of the book, only interjecting when necessary.Unlike many seemingly similar immigrant stories, Gage makes the story accessible to all. You are not at all required to understand Greek culture to enjoy this book, although you may be inclined to afterwards. He provides the appropriate historical context and touches on universal topics as he tells his mother's story--family first, human perseverance, unfairness, loss and acceptance.

The book is well written, and gives the reader much to think about beyond the particulars of the Greek civil war. The human experience includes much intolerance, manipulation, envy and fear, as well as more elevating characteristics such as love, loyalty, courage and sacrifice. The Greek proverb quoted near the beginning was extremely appropriate; “when buffalo battle in the marsh, it’s the frogs that pay.” There are many people and small nations that have suffered greatly in the power struggles of the mighty and ambitious. Yet it is also important to contemplate the actions of individuals in this context, and how their actions make things better or worse. The frog might not survive, but it can retain some dignity and integrity, and this is a large part of the story told here. When the larger players have faded or left for other battlegrounds, healing is a necessary but difficult process, and the book (as well as his daughter’s sequel North of Ithika) examines the process of understanding and overcoming the past as well.

I have been meaning to read this book for years, knowing it would be a difficult story for me to absorb - one that would not be forgotten. I am a Greek American, whose Yiayia and Papou emigrated to the U.S. around 1920. Although I may have relatives in Greece that were affected by the violence of WWII and the Greek Civil War, I do not have personal knowledge of any. Read this book, and you will suffer with the Gatzoyiannis family. It gave me an insight into some of the customs practiced by my grandparents, my US-born father (to a lesser extent), and our Greek Orthodox church community. This story of Greek against Greek (Communists versus Nationalists), which continued to rage after WWII was over, is horrifying to those of us proud of our heritage. Nick Gage (born Nikoloas Gatzoyiannis) painstakingly reconstructed the history and events leading up to his escape from the Communist-occupied town of Lia, along with his sisters, as well as the execution of his mother (who instigated their escape to safety). It is a wrenching story of love, unfathomable hardship, and betrayal.

Read this book many years ago and it was a heart rending story.. lost my original and plan to read this story again. just shows how politics affects all our lives and all too often in negative ways.. not to mention gossiping, jealous people.. Nicholas did a wonderful job in showing the world just what an amazing person his mother, Eleni was.. It never ends, just look at what is happening in the middle east right now, and all the suffering the innocents have to endure!! But this is and will be a neverending story, it is unfortunately, human beings..

This book is written for the most ordinary person and by the most extraordinary man. It is a compelling story presented in a way that resonates with a broad audience. Above all else it is story telling at it's finest. Be prepared to be convicted in a way that challenges your assumptions about how we often make our decisions and form our opinions. This book is informative as any historical accounting should be but it really makes one look at the human spirit and sense of mission and duty. The topic of genocide does not interest a lot of people but as presented here it should. An Ordinary Man is a cautionary tale and it reminds me of how important it is to live consciously. It portrays people in the ugliest way but through this author it validates the strength and beauty of the human spirit.

This book is so powerful! I have only gotten into the first 100 pages and am going crazy to find time to continue reading! The history is very accurate.

An extremely detailed, lengthy report of the life and death struggles of the author's mother and villagers in a small, communist occupied Greek mountain town. While a tremendous credit to his mother, I nearly set it aside. The last 100 pages made it all worthwhile.

I am very very impressed with this book. It contains far more information and recipes than I expected. It's organized by month and contains relevant recipes and food-culture facts about each month. It's the kind of book I can imagine we'll be taking out all year round to make recipes and look up information.For example, September has a few sandwich recipes, and an introduction to quinoa with a back to school theme and craft projects such as making your own reusable lunch bag. (That's not all there is for September, but just a sampling.)The book has recipes, food facts, crafts, and true to national geographic, also pays attention to the environment and culture. I'm very glad I happened upon this book and look forward to getting into it with the kids. We are going to try and do everything in the September section this month and bust it out every month for family time. I just hope we can hold off until October before moving on to October's projects!

This is one of the best cookbooks I've come across for cooking with kids.My six-year-old granddaughter and I can pull it up on our individual Kindles and look for something seasonal and enticing.The book is arranged seasonally by month, with lots of eye-catching photos and creative ideas based on food and eating.The book is for older children, I would say 9-12 roughly, so my younger granddaughter needs plenty of help, but it is a joy for us to cook together.I use the book for myself as well, many of the recipes are suitable for adults to cook and enjoy too.

A neat book with lots of food facts and pictures. I agree that it doesn't have as many recipes as I thought it would, though. The kids and I have made a few of the recipes, and they turned out pretty well. Anything to get kids interested and excited about making their own food is great in my book!

I purchased one of these for each of my grandchildren. My ten-year-old granddaughter has made dinner using this cookbook and even provided me with a shopping list for a recipe she wanted to make when she was coming to visit. Both kids loved this book. I highly recommend it for grandparents to give their grandchildren.

We love all our National Geographic books but this book should not be titled as a cook book. It has great information and stories but very few recipes. The title is misleading.

Great book.I Purchased for my niece (7) who wants to cook. It was hard to find one for her age that was not just kids finger foods. Love that it is informational in addition to the recipes. It was not just fruit salad and ants on a log. She was already reading it on Christmas picking what recipe to mage first.
