From a strategic analysis standpoint, this is a great book. Extremely well researched and thought provoking, it makes Americans question how long our dominance on the world stage can last and what we might need to change in order to prevent a scenario like the one in the book from happening. From a storytelling standpoint, this book is written in the style of the Game of Thrones books - each chapter rotates between characters, and at first you don't really know what is going on until the many plotlines start to come together. However, it is far too short of a book for this approach to be truly effective. Many characters/plotlines are introduced but then forgotten or wrapped up haphazardly. Another frustrating similarity this book shares with Game of Thrones is a knack for ending a chapter right as something intense is about to happen. You only find out about how such events unfolded in passing in later chapters, if the event is explicitly mentioned again at all. But the value of the book is in the vulnerabilities and possibilities we face as a nation in the 21st century, so I still thought it was a great book overall.

A cautionary tale. America's military has fallen prey to ill-advised budget cuts and has unwisely allowed key electronics components to be supplied by manufacturers subverted by enemy agencies... processor chips have naughty agendas!I enjoyed this, but it's scary. I really truly hope our military never fall prey to the scenarios portrayed in this novel.The only thing preventing me from given this book 5 stars was, for me, the ending seemed a bit rushed. After the huge amount of detail given the lead-up to the final battle, the actual battle seemed a bit perfunctory - I want to relish how the baddies were at last given their just deserts and the final denouement was too brisk.

This is an interesting book and premise - a future war fought against a Chinese/Russian alliance. The technology mentioned exists (or can easily exist) and it gives one pause when you realize that over the years, we've basically handed our technology over to the Chinese to produce... and what can happen as a result.The book reminds me a bit of Tom Clancy's often over looked thriller, 'Red Storm Rising" (an excellent book and one of my favorites). There are no real chapters, just sections with each of the events unfolding in a different theatre of operation. The question posed is: can you fight back with "obsolete" equipment. In this case, much of the story focuses on naval power.It's not the best written novel I have read, and the end left me a little hanging, but it was well worth the time reading and I enjoyed it thoroughly. In a way, quite thought provoking.

I give this book 5 stars for research, documentation, and prescience, but only 3 for story; an average of 4. While the concept is not new to military sci-fi readers, the cyber storyline and very near future timeline set it apart. More directly, the plausibility is troubling, especially in light of America's recent blind "trust" of potential adversaries.Overall, an engaging and quick read.

There are two aspects to this book:1. Fictional story (3 or 4 out of 5 stars) - The storyline is well thought out, flows well, and has (mostly) good character development whom you can identify with. It is fast-paced with short sections alternating between character/event groups. I would recommend it just from an entertainment aspect alone.2. Fact-based Cybersecurity warning (5 out of 5 stars) - The book is riddled with real-life factual references like a thesis paper on the potential dangers if the U.S. doesn't get serious about cybersecurity. We are already in the first stages of a cyberwar with China and other nation-states, and this book highlights what it could easily lead to. Even if the fictional aspect is not the genre one likes, politicians, military leaders, government agencies, and business leaders should read this as it if were a validated white paper that outlines the risks that they should seek to mitigate now.When so many fictional "cyber" or "hacking" stories can be rather corny (e.g., CSI Cyber), this one is first rate with its storyline, writing, and informative insights.

"Ghost Fleet" is a collaboration between two individuals who as described follow and write about new military technologies. Their novel, then, appears to contain some of their favorite projections and complaints regarding the direction of American mil tech investments. It sometimes reads as near future sci-fi, and at others like a polemic with a dose of Jane's Defence Weekly.The plot involves a surprise attack by a Chinese and Russian alliance against an overconfident and complacent USA. The Pearl Harbor scenario is exciting and then continues as the Chinese strategy seems to mirror the WWII Japanese strategy of not seeking an American defeat but rather our acquiescence in their war gains. (Minor Spoiler Alert) In this case, the Chinese occupy Hawaii, and a good deal of the book is about American resistance efforts there.As one should expect given the authors' backgrounds, the technologies described are quite interesting. Surprisingly, I found the characters to be well done and the book as a whole a more engaging read than I had expected. This is admittedly not a subject that would appeal to everyone, but I encourage those interested in current military affairs to give it a try.

Greg does an phenomenal job of researching and narrating (in extremely, detailed chronological order) the rise of Van Halen. The only third party biography on the band that you'll ever want or need, as you will walk away firmly satisfied. The narrative is written with journalist neutrality - not taking sides, but sharing just the facts. The notorious riffs between the brothers and DLR are deeply rooted in their first encounters with each other. Many have asked how DLR was tapped for the band. But, he actually brought vision and flare that complimented and completed the virtuoso playing of the brothers. It is unlikely that either would have succeeded to their zenith without the other. This is a statement that I would not have made prior to reading this book. I opted for the audible audio version since it is in narrative form. Very easy to set down and pick up later. But you won't want to set it down that much as it is a thoroughly interesting account.

I just finished this book, having consumed it as soon as it arrived. (Well, as fast as I could considering I work full time and have three little kids and a wife, but you know what I mean). I am a Van Halen fan and gained a deeper respect and appreciation for the band after reading this book. I've always loved their albums but have taken them for granted until now. I was three years old in 1978, so pretty much every memory involving the band or hearing their name and their music came with the assumption they are undisputedly awesome. They defined hard rock for my entire life. Just the name "Van Halen" was synonymous with ass-kicking.Now, having read this book, I realized what set them apart from so many awful clones: They worked their asses off for years before hitting it big, against the crazy tide of commercial music that hated what they represented. It seems like most bands since Van Halen want fame immediately and are unwilling to put in the work to build their name up. Having read this book it is absolutely NO WONDER they exploded within a year of their debut album hitting the stores. I absolutely loved the stories from the "big" bands at the time for whom Van Halen opened -- Black Sabbath, Journey, etc. -- regretting having to follow these young upstarts. Van Halen were starving by the time they landed a tour, and were primed and ready. The big bands at that time -- and no disrespect is implied here -- hadn't seen anything like them and were on automatic pilot, it seems. (Such a kick that Sabbath were supporting an album called "Never Say Die" when they were clearly dying a slow death night after night.)Probably the biggest thing I came away with after reading Van Halen Rising was a deep respect for David Lee Roth. Look, you either love him or hate him. I've vacillated between one or the other in the years of being a VH fan. I now can say I love the guy. He's taken his licks since Day One when he took voice lessons in school. No one has ever praised VH for vocals the way one praises Led Zeppelin, Journey, etc. But without a doubt were it not for his style, incredible DRIVE, and an unfathomable amount of faith and hope (and those aren't just the names of a couple of strippers in Vegas) Van Halen as we know it would not exist. He changed their look and broadened their soundscape. He compensated for his vocals with incredible charisma. The man is smart and savvy, and I can tell he knew he was lucky when Ed and Al let him into the fold. They no doubt knew they were lucky to have a guy fight so hard to help them become a best-selling act.The interviews are well-sourced. I loved hearing Ted Templeman's stories, including that he wanted to replace Roth with Sammy Hagar but relented when he heard Roth's lyrics. To this day that's one of the biggest differences between those two iterations of Van Halen. Good to hear from Michael Anthony -- who I felt sorry for when I saw the pics to the clothes he had to wear the first concert he played in -- and good to hear from Mark Stone, the guy he replaced.I'm giving this 4, not 5 stars for aesthetic reasons only. This looks like a vanity press, self-published book. I know it is not endorsed by VH, I get it. But the ink on some of the pages were lighter than others and at times somewhat difficult to read. I would have loved for this to have been published by a better publisher, and certainly in hardcover. It was clearly written by a fan who took it upon himself to fill a void that many of us wanted filled, but the quality/presentation of the book FELT like it was written by a fan, if that means anything. I'm that specific kind of book nerd. So sue me. Of course most of the photos in here were not professionally done -- probably taken from a friend at the party, but as a rock bio fan I would have killed for a middle section of some color photos.But I hope you hear from this review that the quality of the story itself is very satisfying and made me appreciate Van Halen more than ever. I saw Van Halen at least 20 times at backyard parties and small venues that they sold out themselves. I then saw a dozen shows of the first tour alone. This book nails what I saw and the people like Rudy Lieren who was Ed's longtime guitar tech that I spoke with. His research is truly amazing, his sources are listed throughout this book. It takes you from the band members early days right up until they get signed. It's the most comprehensive book on those early days I have ever seen. A must for VH fans or any rock fans.

First and foremost, I am a lifelong Van Halen fan since 1978.I have been following the band since I moved to L.A., and my youth was formed around the music scene there since 1978 to 1985.The book provides me some refreshed memories of backyard parties and auditorium gatherings where bands played live. I wish I had seen the mighty Van Halen in its formative years but this book takes you back in time.I have my memories of what bands I saw but now I can certainly see where all the luster and bluster for hard rock comes from. I just saw them in concert this year and was glad that the book plus the tour made the summer even more special for me, as a fan.In researching the young Van Halen's youth, particularly bringing us in to their teens years, you can learn so much about who they are today.Especially their relationship as brothers, as band mates to each other, and their relationship with one David Lee Roth.I am glad Greg Renoff put this well written story of my favorite band together.I am on my second re-read and much like Dave's Crazy from the Heat, I cannot put it down.If you love music, and if you love success stories with great background I strongly recommend Van Halen Rising!

As a music lover and miserable wannabe player I read a lot of this type of book. In fact I read Sammy's and Valerie's works quite a while ago. I don't know what to even say about this effort. I've never seen anything like it. It's SO well-researched, and written by not just a fan but someone that knows something about music.I jumped on this because of the great reviews and never considered that it might not be a complete biography of the band. You click on this before all synapses are firing if you are some of us. I was in a world of book-reading where "it's too good to be true". Then we were done and it dawned on me that the title of the book indicated the scope. Bummer, but it is still one of the most fulfilling books about one of my music heroes that I have ever read and I am going to scour the landscape for another Renoff project.

Since this book was required for the last class I have to take for my degree, I had no choice but to buy it. It thoroughly covers polymers at a graduate level. It doesn't waste your time going over topics that were covered in organic chemistry I & II, which is a good thing.Why the three stars then? The author could have done a much better job presenting the information. What do I mean? Well, for example on page 23 when discussing synthetic rubbers he just mentions "IIR" and you should somehow know that it stands for "isobutylene isoprene rubber". This is right after he mentions ABS, which you have to infer from the previous paragraph that it stands for "acrylonitrile butadiene rubber". It seems like every few pages you have to stop and back into the information that he should have simply stated. This prolongs study sessions quite a bit.The homework problems are also pretty useless. My instructor did not assign homework so I had no way of testing my knowledge of the material because this book does not provide answers to any of the homework problems. Is it required? No, but since most textbooks have answers in the back for the even or odd problems, I feel like this one should as well.Overall, 3 stars=average. Nothing spectacular but nothing seriously wrong either.

I'm really enjoying this book. It has a fair bit of practical advice on how to test polymers (more please!!!) and gives lots of facts about their structure, function and properties.TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis) and Raman spectra don't get much of a mention... but it's certainly seems to cover a lot of areas.It was surprisingly hard to find a polymers book that covered most of the basic facts... despite asking for suggestions from a number of polymer chemists and searching online. This suggests that there are very few good books which meet this need.From the undergrad perspective (my undergrad project is in polymers) this is a quite readable and very useful text. I'm just sorry that they don't teach us more about polymers at Uni: they've dropped polymers as an elective entirely (lecturer retired and not replaced).Polymers are a very interesting area of chemistry... and this book certainly helps explain why.

The majority of the Third Edition is unchanged from the Second, except in two important ways: for the first time, problem sets are found after each chapter, which is a welcome addition over the earlier editions. Secondly, recent developments in polymer chemistry have been added: controlled architecture polymers, such as dendrimers and stars, along with metallocene chemistry, RAFT, ATRP, and other catalyst mediated chemistries. To make room for these developments, the content on liquid crystalline polyesters is combined with the chapter on crystallinity. Those seeking an in-depth coverage of viscoelasticity and ultimate mechanical properties, especially the latter, will need to supplement the coverage of these subjects using other texts and reference works. Publication under the CRC/Taylor and Francis Group makes this book more readily available in the U.S. than were previous editions.

Such a good read for materials science majors like myself! It's a great textbook and an easy read with tons of graphs.

The book is very well written on the chemistry and physics of polymers. It is one of the very best books of the field. The new edition includes review questions, a bonus.

My toddler loves this series. I love giving her strong female role models. There are times when my feminism and Christianity seem to clash, but thankfully, this book presents the female character in an empowering way.The illustrations are wonderful and ascend above cartoonish depictions of Bible characters. I love that the characters aren't whitewashed, which makes the books both more historically accurate and inclusive.Overall, I'm a big fan and hope to see more books like this embraced by the Christian community.

You better believe I will adding the other books to our collection as soon as I can!This is a creative retelling of the story of Deborah perfectly suited for kids the age of my own (3,5,6.5). They were enthralled with the story and the pictures are just art. I especially loved the lesson about trusting God to tell you what to do and the discussion questions at the end. An easy way to add a little more depth and a few more stories into your kids Bible knowledge. These books are vital for little girls (and for boys). A great way to communicate that God calls women and girls to do all sorts of things, not just traditionally sanctioned roles. Hurray for that!(Also: don’t worry they skimmed over the graphic details about how Jael killed Sisera!) —

The story of Deborah is a beautiful one, and I loved every page of this book telling of her courage.I loved reading this with my four year old daughter. She gasped at the destruction Sisera’s army brought to God’s people, hating the villages on fire. She laughed out loud when God rescued them, and celebrated the courage of Deborah. My own heart rejoiced to share this Biblical narrative in an accessible way with my girl. Like Deborah, she is a leader, brave and imaginative.I loved the opportunity this book gave us to talk about what courage looks like, and pray together for her upcoming doctor’s appointment that she feels afraid for.I anticipate that this will be a new favorite in our home.A for me.I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
