Review

"Girls and young women today receive many powerful messages about what it means to be female. From Disney princesses to teen pop stars, these 'icons of femininity' can obscure God's message of love and identity for young women. Christian communities have not always been proactive in ensuring that girls receive an identity derived from Scripture. That is why I am excited to see Rachel Weaver and Anna Haggard create a children's book series that recounts and honors the women of Scripture. In every story, we see how a woman responded in faith to God's call on her life and was used by Him for incredible purposes. As parents and churches use this book series for instruction, I see many girls responding to God in faith and being used by Him to reach the world with the gospel. We've waited for a series like this for a long time, and I'm so glad it's finally here." —Katelyn Beaty, managing editor at Christianity Today magazine and author of A Woman's Place: A Christian Vision for Your Calling in the Office, the Home, and the World"As a mother longing to impart the knowledge and strength of biblical women to my daughter, I truly wish this resource was available for us during her young formative years. Making the truth of God's Word understandable and applicable to young girls can have the power to change a generation. Thank you, Rachel and Anna, for filling the gap with this series." —Beth Koser Schwartz, women's minister at Saddleback Church"I can't wait to give these books to my own tinies! If you've ever wondered where the women of Scripture are in the children's book section, this book is your bright and bold and gorgeous answer." —Sarah Bessey, author of Jesus Feminist and Out of Sorts: Making Peace with an Evolving Faith"Scripture is filled with stories of women who are role models of faith, intellect, and resolve, characteristics I see in my wife and daughter, as well as in the entrepreneurial women we serve around the world. It is exciting to see a book series that shares biblical stories of women who are leaders in their homes, businesses, and communities. Called and Courageous Girls is perfectly timed and expertly positioned to reach the littlest leaders, those whose characters are being shaped to look like Jesus. The series fills a gap in children's literature. We must share these stories, and I am thrilled to enthusiastically support Called and Courageous Girls." —Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE International, coauthor of Mission Drift

My toddler loves this series. I love giving her strong female role models. There are times when my feminism and Christianity seem to clash, but thankfully, this book presents the female character in an empowering way.The illustrations are wonderful and ascend above cartoonish depictions of Bible characters. I love that the characters aren't whitewashed, which makes the books both more historically accurate and inclusive.Overall, I'm a big fan and hope to see more books like this embraced by the Christian community.

Image that a young girl named Deborah, along with a group of friends, are happily playing on a hilltop. Suddenly, the children see danger approaching their village. Instead of running away as she wants, Deborah risks death to warn the villagers of the coming threat. Surprisingly, she is able to convince her playmates to help her. So, begins a narrative based on the Biblical account of Debra in Judges 4.There are many reasons for Deborah’s story to be fascinating: she was the only female judge in ancient Israel, she believed God would give Israel victory even during times that didn’t look promising, and she decided cases and meted out justice--all the while sitting under a palm tree.Whether your child is familiar with Deborah’s story, or this is the first time to hear it, they will enjoy this exciting account that has action, bravery, and God’s help in scary situations. War times are part of the story, but it is told on a child’s level.A Fearless Leader is part of a collection of books that has the following hope: “through the stories of female Bible heroes, The Called and Courageous Girls series invites your children to answer God’s calling to discover and use their talents, passions, and gifts to journey with Him on a lifelong adventure.” This book does all that and more. Boys, too, will enjoy this book despite the name of the series. This hardbacked volume uses a type of illustration by Eric Elwell that really captures the outdoor scenes throughout the story. Bravery, courageousness, and remaining faithful to God in hard times are all promoted in this 5-star book. I recommend it to all the children in your life.Harvest House Publishers has provided bookreadingtic with a complimentary copy of, A Fearless Leader: A Bible Story About Deborah, for the purpose of review. * I was given this book for my honest opinion, no money was exchanged.I can't express how much I like this book. But I'm going to do my best.In a world that is nurturing the idea that feminism equates to emasculating the men around you, demonizing the world, and picturing yourself as a victim, this book shows the true power of a woman.Power, of course, comes from God. This book perfectly illustrates to our children how God can use anyone regardless of age, sex, ethnicity…I can tell you about how the book is a book made of quality. I can tell you that the illustrations are fresh, distinctive, and beautiful. I can tell you that the story is biblically accurate. (Though the ending is more kid friendly 😉)I would prefer to tell you, though, that my nieces were completely enraptured by this story. My six-year-old niece was enthralled with the story of Deborah and how God used her. That is my favorite thing about this entire review. When you can get a small child to fall in love with the real events documented in the Bible then you are setting a path for them that can only lead to success. This is the path God desires for women - that we might be used by him mightily, not see ourselves as victims! The story of Deborah is a wonderful one and I'm so glad that it has been made accessible and exciting to children through this book.If you want to empower young girls in your life, or share with any children in your life that God can use anyone that is willing to be used by Him, I encourage you to purchase this book today.

(Review Copy thanks to @harvesthousepublishers) I am so pleased with this series of books, Called and Courageous Girls about women in the Bible. I love this one about Deborah. You better believe I will adding the other books to our collection as soon as I can! This is a creative retelling of the story of Deborah perfectly suited for kids the age of my own (3,5,6.5). They were enthralled with the story and the pictures are just art. I especially loved the lesson about trusting God to tell you what to do and the discussion questions at the end. An easy way to add a little more depth and a few more stories into your kids Bible knowledge. These books are vital for little girls (and for boys). A great way to communicate that God calls women and girls to do all sorts of things, not just traditionally sanctioned roles. Hurray for that!(Also: don’t worry they skimmed over the graphic details about how Jael killed Sisera!) —

The story of Deborah is a beautiful one, and I loved every page of this book telling of her courage.I loved reading this with my four year old daughter. She gasped at the destruction Sisera’s army brought to God’s people, hating the villages on fire. She laughed out loud when God rescued them, and celebrated the courage of Deborah. My own heart rejoiced to share this Biblical narrative in an accessible way with my girl. Like Deborah, she is a leader, brave and imaginative.I loved the opportunity this book gave us to talk about what courage looks like, and pray together for her upcoming doctor’s appointment that she feels afraid for.I anticipate that this will be a new favorite in our home.A for me.I received a copy of this book from the publisher. My opinions are my own.
