Since this book was required for the last class I have to take for my degree, I had no choice but to buy it. It thoroughly covers polymers at a graduate level. It doesn't waste your time going over topics that were covered in organic chemistry I & II, which is a good thing.Why the three stars then? The author could have done a much better job presenting the information. What do I mean? Well, for example on page 23 when discussing synthetic rubbers he just mentions "IIR" and you should somehow know that it stands for "isobutylene isoprene rubber". This is right after he mentions ABS, which you have to infer from the previous paragraph that it stands for "acrylonitrile butadiene rubber". It seems like every few pages you have to stop and back into the information that he should have simply stated. This prolongs study sessions quite a bit.The homework problems are also pretty useless. My instructor did not assign homework so I had no way of testing my knowledge of the material because this book does not provide answers to any of the homework problems. Is it required? No, but since most textbooks have answers in the back for the even or odd problems, I feel like this one should as well.Overall, 3 stars=average. Nothing spectacular but nothing seriously wrong either.

I'm really enjoying this book. It has a fair bit of practical advice on how to test polymers (more please!!!) and gives lots of facts about their structure, function and properties.TGA (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis) and Raman spectra don't get much of a mention... but it's certainly seems to cover a lot of areas.It was surprisingly hard to find a polymers book that covered most of the basic facts... despite asking for suggestions from a number of polymer chemists and searching online. This suggests that there are very few good books which meet this need.From the undergrad perspective (my undergrad project is in polymers) this is a quite readable and very useful text. I'm just sorry that they don't teach us more about polymers at Uni: they've dropped polymers as an elective entirely (lecturer retired and not replaced).Polymers are a very interesting area of chemistry... and this book certainly helps explain why.

My toddler loves this series. I love giving her strong female role models. There are times when my feminism and Christianity seem to clash, but thankfully, this book presents the female character in an empowering way.The illustrations are wonderful and ascend above cartoonish depictions of Bible characters. I love that the characters aren't whitewashed, which makes the books both more historically accurate and inclusive.Overall, I'm a big fan and hope to see more books like this embraced by the Christian community.

Image that a young girl named Deborah, along with a group of friends, are happily playing on a hilltop. Suddenly, the children see danger approaching their village. Instead of running away as she wants, Deborah risks death to warn the villagers of the coming threat. Surprisingly, she is able to convince her playmates to help her. So, begins a narrative based on the Biblical account of Debra in Judges 4.There are many reasons for Deborah’s story to be fascinating: she was the only female judge in ancient Israel, she believed God would give Israel victory even during times that didn’t look promising, and she decided cases and meted out justice--all the while sitting under a palm tree.Whether your child is familiar with Deborah’s story, or this is the first time to hear it, they will enjoy this exciting account that has action, bravery, and God’s help in scary situations. That is my favorite thing about this entire review.When you can get a small child to fall in love with the real events documented in the Bible then you are setting a path for them that can only lead to success.This is the path God desires for women - that we might be used by him mightily, not see ourselves as victims! You better believe I will adding the other books to our collection as soon as I can!This is a creative retelling of the story of Deborah perfectly suited for kids the age of my own (3,5,6.5). They were enthralled with the story and the pictures are just art. I especially loved the lesson about trusting God to tell you what to do and the discussion questions at the end. An easy way to add a little more depth and a few more stories into your kids Bible knowledge. These books are vital for little girls (and for boys). A great way to communicate that God calls women and girls to do all sorts of things, not just traditionally sanctioned roles. Hurray for that!(Also: don’t worry they skimmed over the graphic details about how Jael killed Sisera!) —

The story of Deborah is a beautiful one, and I loved every page of this book telling of her courage.I loved reading this with my four year old daughter. She gasped at the destruction Sisera’s army brought to God’s people, hating the villages on fire. She laughed out loud when God rescued them, and celebrated the courage of Deborah. My own heart rejoiced to share this Biblical narrative in an accessible way with my girl. Like Deborah, she is a leader, brave and imaginative.I loved the opportunity this book gave us to talk about what courage looks like, and pray together for her upcoming doctor’s appointment that she feels afraid for.I anticipate that this will be a new favorite in our home.A for me.I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Dianne Lake was 14 when she joined Charles Manson's Family. She was there because her mixed up parents decided they didn't have to take care of her anymore. That's why I say she's a victim.You want to reach through the book and shake her mom and dad until their teeth rattle. What in hell were they thinking?!But ultimately she's a victor. She got mental health help, testified against the murdering Charlie and his Family. She got an education, married happily, had kids, and created her own--real--family.Her feelings and adult analysis of how Charlie manipulated people are really interesting. As she looks back, she connects the dots. What she just accepted as Charlie's fiats back then, she now realizes were part of his plan for control and success. The specifics of how he got the Family and outsiders to do his bidding is fascinating.The book is well written and talks about aspects of Manson and his crew that other books don't cover. Whether you're interested in Manson, true crime, or biographies of people who successfully overcome the odds, it's a great read.

Overall this is probably the best memoir written by any of the former members of the Manson Family (Susan Atkins wrote a bunch, but they all feel like attempts to excuse herself, as does Tex Watkins's book). To her credit Lake admits at the beginning that many of these events took place 50 years ago and there are simply things she cannot remember, and that she is presenting things from her perspective. The only reason I'm giving this four stars instead of five is because it feels as if there is a crucial chapter missing between when she testifies against Manson et all in the first trial and the epilogue. I found myself wondering if anyone from the Family ever tried to contact her after 1978 (she mentions one pseudo-reporter finding her), and what her thoughts about these people -- in particular the girls whom she refers to at one point as her friends, lovers, and family -- after all of these years. I understand why she may not have wanted to write more about her husband and children, but -- particularly since the parole board recently voted to grant Leslie Van Houtten (whom Lake doesn't seem to have had liked much) parole -- I felt this was really needed. One (probably unintended) audience I think this book might resonate with would be girls in the 14-16 age range who might be struggling to connect with their family.

I don't want this book to end. Fascinating. I was a pseudo-hippie in the 70's - I remember this all. The author has written an interesting birds eye view of what it was like living with Charles Manson. I often thought briefly of heading toward a racier life than I actually did - so glad I did not. I chose working for a living in corporate America; I could have landed in a similar situation with the wrong guidance. Thank God Dianne you made it out in one piece. Your book is the kind of book I save for vacations in the islands or a long plane trip! I'm getting toward the end of the book - too bad. Good books like this are hard to find.

My interest in this book stems from my readings of Alice Miller’s early work and like many people, I’ve read "Helter Skelter". The curiosity of how a ‘Charles Manson’ could be created and how he could get so many followers has been an ongoing question since those horrible murders 50 years ago. Having viewed the PBS, “Summer of Love” documentary and seeing Netflix’s, “Mindhunter”, (which is a great book also), one significant key lies within this highly introspective account.In the PBS show, one point made is that the Haight-Ashbury District was teeming with young kids on their own. In light of current sex abuse scandals & the high incidence of pedophilia, I wondered how many of those vulnerable kids were escaping molesting environments and dysfunctional homes. Turns out my suspicions were correct with this history; Dianne Lane provides a very personal recollection of being a 14 year-old in 1967, in the LA and San Francisco area. Dianne’s heartbreaking family experience and her courageous portrayal sheds light on how kids need safe structure in their lives. Neither she or Manson had healthy upbringings and they intertwined in a perfect storm of deadly chaos. (At the very least known, Manson was burdened with abandonment, uprooting and deep shame at age 4 or 5 with his teenage mother’s imprisonment. He was sent into the Catholic school system thereafter.)Dianne is the narrator of her own account and she has a pleasing voice; she speaks clearly and the book is written with great focus and care. She shares the thoughts of a normal, young teen trying to navigate life with normal, early teenage drives and needs. Unfortunately, she was let down by the adults who surrounded her. I hope the insight in these books & programs available to the public, along with the daily increasing voices of women & men who’ve survived sexual abuse will make great change in how children are treated. We need to make less predators and we need to make less vulnerable kids. I believe it takes great courage to expose a personal history like this; I hope it makes a lasting imprint into our culture. I highly recommend this book to all parents, all adults and all abuse survivors. I deeply thank Dianne Lane for sharing her life.

This is a superb book. I have rarely read a anything so profound and disturbing. It is well written and portrays, in a very matter of fact way, the history of lynching in America. Mostly focusing on the era between Reconstruction and the 60's, it documents a number of horrifying lynching events in the US. While concentrating on the persecution of blacks in the South, for obvious reasons, it also documents murders in Northern states and adds details about lynching of Leo Frank in Marietta. While it could have delved more deeply into the reasons why these events took place, it nevertheless does discuss these issues to some extent.Overall, I believe everyone should read this book if one wishes to understand the race situation in modern America. The book is well referenced and scholarly but extremely readable and discusses some horrific details of individual cases without glorifying or wallowing in the gory details.

Not just a survey of American lynchings (in brutal detail, I might add)... but a meticulously researched piece about the underlying causes. The book is also a pretty shattering indictment of southern rural whites (Im not sure things have improved that drastically, having lived in the south for 7 years). Fascinating to see the backbends government officials did trying NOT to protect vulnerable citizens from this violence. Not much has changed. Read it and weep.

At Hand of Persons Unknown is not for the faint-at-heart, or for the casual African American history buff. This book is grisly, ghastly, and tragic. Phillip Dray delves into a subject that many cannot comprehend, one where people were sadistically murdered for questioning the status quo or for something as innocent as an adolescent catcall. Such lynchings occurred for one purpose: to maintain a system of dominance for those considered second class citizens. Lynching allowed bigots and racists to partake in extreme violence, as ordinary citizens became judges, jurors, and executioners because they held power in their statuses.Dray notes that Lynching was also meted out to whites, such as that of Leo Frank, the Jewish-American businessman falsely accused of rape. The Frank case illustrates that any minority group could be scapegoated and lynched if they threatened the "order of things" (Frank was more successful than many southern Protestants). This was a difficult read that gave me nightmares because it was real, and in most instances legal.

This book should be required reading in all high schools. Maybe it could effect change in the US racial climate. More effective than any rallies by the BLACK LIVES MATTER group. No history class that I took in high school or college (I live in Texas) ever made me aware of the atrocities committed against blacks. I thought lynching just meant hanging — bad enough without any legal trial — but mutilation and burning alive! The Supreme Court making unfair and illegal decisions against the blacks or totally refusing to get involved, just as did Congress — all facts that every US citizen should know. It makes the progress made by black citizens a true miracle.

This book is one of the finest history books I've ever read. If you're interested in U.S. history, race relations, civil rights, etc., this book MUST be part of your library. Yes, the subject matter -- and some of the details of lynchings -- are disturbing to say the least...but it's an important part of our not too distant past. The author has done an impeccable job of researching and compiling this reference book on lynching. Difficult to digest but difficult to put down as well. Of all the books I've read on U.S. history (and I have a degree in history), this might be the most memorable. You don't need to be a history buff to read this, however.

Phillip Dray has accomplished what so many other researchers, authors, and historians have not...getting the true story and getting it RIGHT!!. His book exemplifies the truth of history, and the untold facts of lynchings and slavery. It should be mandatory reading for all college students who are pursuing degrees in social sciences, history, law, or education. Especially compelling are the facts related to Ida B. Wells-Barnett. She was a significant part of African-American history, and has not been given her "props" in a significant way. Chapter five of the book could be a singular non-fiction novel alone. Excellent reading and information.

This well-written and shocking book about our country's dismal treatment of black Americans (mostly, but not exclusively) documents in gruesome detail some of the worst traits of man-on-man violence ever put on paper and I don't exaggerate when I say it is quite sickening how ingrained hate can effect whole communities. In some of the most hideous stories you won't hear about in grade school history, white violence against black people of all ages, sex or origin (mostly in the South, tho) are told with compelling narrative. You come to understand that it was a long haul from Reconstruction to voting rights laws, punctuated by the terror of being dragged out of your home and brutalized in the most terrible ways imaginable. Granted, some of those lynched were probably guilty of crimes they were accused of but none were given fair trials and even then, many were dragged out of police custody and killed outrageously in front of huge crowds. This is not a pleasant book but there are inspiring characters on the side of justice who worked long years to stamp out lynching and for that the author is credited with balancing a horrible subject that otherwise would be the most depressing history book ever. My only regret is that footnotes aren't apparent until you get to the end of the text and see there's a section of "Notes" that tells even more stories that could've been elaborated in real-time reading. But this caveat takes nothing away from this important book.

I swear that I thought that I saw several more books in this series (to be). I really did. Imagine my horror and despair when I got to the end of this wonderful book and found out that... it's just the one book. I am crying inside. I have so many unhappy thoughts right now, I am so very sad that THERE'S ONLY ONE BOOK IN THIS SERIES! I am now letting out very dissapointed sighs of... dissapointment. Cry. Please good sir, please write faster and submit more to kindle... please. Oh by the way, I am going to purchase your book rather than just checking it out of the Amazon library. I seriously enjoyed this one. Thank you. Oh and it's almost 2am and I get up in 4 hours for work. Second night in a row that I did this. My brain is fried. Good night.

The book starts like a lot of the other LitRPGs out there, a good-hearted guy in a dim world, a traumatic past, unlucky present, a love for everything fantasy with talent in gaming is being given a chance for a new (possibly better) life as a permanent player in the best game ever created.But after that very similar foundation the author builds almost everything better then in most LitRPG series (and i have read most of them), the characters all feel real and has the proper depth to mystery balance, the world is interesting, believable and limitless, and the part that i found most important: by the end of the book, everything major is explained properly and the book doesn't just "pause", all the big quest chains are resolved!Can't wait for book number 2, good job sir Nylund.

This book is a fantastic first foray into LitRPG and opens the stage on a titanic, multi worlds-spanning struggle that is really fun and compelling. The MC is thrown into this mix in such a way that raises all sorts of backstory questions, and allows the interesting class/leveling system to be explored more fully than it otherwise could be.Honestly, this is just a great book and a fun read. I can't wait for the next one. When the MC multiclasses, I'll be very satisfied.

This novel ties into a much larger universe, with a few references to earlier works. These references embrace the long-time fan as a welcome home.The story itself has to hit certain notes as part of the LIT-RPG genre, the protagonist has to be put into a position that requires full immersion into the Game. The selection of race/class/skills. First steps into the Game and game mechanics.After these notes are hit, the story really takes off.The characters popped, the challenges were inventive, and creative solutions are rewarded.I am really looking forward to the next book in this series.

The LitRPG genre is rife with trash novels consisting of poor grammar, abysmal punctuation and spelling, and host of other high-end defects. Not least among such defects is simply crappy writing, shite plotting, and trite, shallow characters.NONE of that will be found here.Hero of Thera is a breakneck sleighride of multi-dimensional characters, interesting world building, and entertaining plot twists. It's written with respect for the characters, the world in which it is placed, AND for the readers. Wonderful!Really, just for being proofread and well edited, I'd have marked it highly, but with the bonus of a cracking story, well, top marks!

I have enjoyed reading and video games for the majority of my life, but its really only been recently that I've delved into the combination of the two in the form of litRPG. The first I read really made me fall in love with it, then I tried others and was severely disappointed. Since I've found a few that I've enjoyed. This is definitely one of them! I liked the theme of this book, making you think about more than just leveling up or beating goblins. Instead it's a constant questioning of traditional good vs evil and what they really mean. I enjoyed the main character as well as the supporting characters, how they're all broken men and women that keep going despite that. I will definitely read more of this series!

Having started the book immediately after reading some cogent critique elsewhere on the lack of written roles for women in SF&F and gaming, I was so impatient for the first woman in the book to show up! The author did not disappoint, writing a diverse cast of characters you can care about, and the kind of immersion in one's game that the rest of us only dream about. A splendid read. Stands well on its own and I hope for more (many more!) in this set and styling. As a reader: a very good engaging read. As an editor (because I can't help myself): well-crafted writing, believable characters I want to meet again, and good storytelling.

What a wonderful ride! Other reviewers have commented on the story and also have stated how much they enjoyed it. I can't add much to what they have said but this: there were times in the book that it made me laugh right out loud. I look for that. It is a treasure to me when I find it in a book.Additionally, Eric Nylund's style and prose is so good that you want to just keep reading. You are interested in the MC.I look forward to reading the next in the series. May "The Game" continue on, :)
