Fun book for the kids! Includes traditional Jewish (although not necessarily biblical) aspects that we don't personally follow but short and sweet and fun to read to the kiddos. Keeping the Sabbath (Shabbat) is something we feel is worth upholding and teaching the kids that they are a part of it both in the preparation (Friday) and celebration (at sundown) is really important.

I ordered this book on a whim because I wanted something Jewish in the mix of my baby's board books, and I really love it. The rhymes and illustrations are cute without being too cutesy, and the things the family is doing to prepare for Shabbat are things families actually do (make dinner, get cleaned up, set the table). It is a lovely celebration of the anticipation of Friday night, and I would definitely recommend it to other Jewish families.

It's a cute book. We like to read it on Thursdays at bedtime so when the kids wake up on Friday they know that today is the day we prepare for Shabbat. I think we have read it enough times that we could all probably recite it without the book!

Purchased this wonderful book for my granddaughter. She is four years old and has already memorize the book. She tends to read this hours before Shabbat. I am so pleased to have made this purchase.

Cute book, decent rhymes. Way better than most Shabbat books I've seen.

Perfect for my 3 year old granddaughter. Shows excitement about the Shabbat, which is about what you want for a young child.

My granddaughter can read it and she is in the 1st grade this year.

A good companion to the President book. My 7 year old loves both. I like that it empowers girls to see the significant role these women had on their country and their husband's presidency.

This is an awesome book. There is so much out there about our presidents but not so much when it comes to their wife. we learned many facts including one president did not have a first lady as she died a year before he took office. It was very interesting and educational. My children really enjoyed this book.

This is a really good Anatomy book. It's a bit way too advanced for me as I was looking for basic anatomy just for drawing that this shows you muscles and veins and everything else underneath the skin.This book would be great for somebody that's going for a more realistic or hyper realistic Anatomy. This will not show you how to draw body parts or anything like that though this is basically just shows you what body parts look like under the skin and you live from there. This is definitely a book for somebody that's more on the details of anatomy versus the basics are overall concept of anatomy.

I'm a hobbyist "artist," and I wanted to find a cheap anatomy book to learn to draw the human figure at the suggestion of an actual artist friend. This certainly let me learn a lot about the human skeleton and muscles from just about every angle I could need. I'm sure I'll hang on to it for as long as I intend to draw.

I really like having this book as its focus is on creating lifelike action poses. The book includes skeletal and muscle drawings. It then shows how these move when you are drawing an action pose. I found it very helpful when depicting humans moving in a scene. The stop-action (time lapse) photos also allow you to see the incremental changes that occur as the body moves.

I've many anatomy books in my studio library, but it is THIS old rag that return to over and over again.

As an Animation student we are required to learn, practice and always draw the figure. I have been doing figure drawing for 2 years now trying to find a book that would let me see the skeleton first, then the head, work down the body and start with the muscles in a clear, simple and complete way. This is the only book that has all of this and I've seen a lot. It is cheap and it has everything an artists needs to have a good understanding of anatomy. It has a lot of detail but not too much that an artist wouldn't care. It's perfect.

AWESOME BOOK SERVES IT'S PURPOSE FOR ME, IT GETS A FIVE.

This book was my required textbook from my college art class over a decade ago, but I still reference every now and then. It's not the best in terms of organization and cohesion. It's similar to a medical illustration book combined with photographs of anatomy and Old Masters' drawings. This is not a technique or how-to-draw book, but a good book to supplement your other illustration books.

I just adore this book! It's a sweet theme and great illustrations. We all end up with the kind of pet we need instead of the one we wanted-great message. I am a teacher and can't wait to share this one with my Kinder students-I know they will love it too!

This is one of those great books that is clever enough to be a fun read for both the kids and the adult reader. It has just the right since of humor for our family. My 5 and 7 year old daughters loved it when we checked it out from the library. Perhaps because the younger one is a huge unicorn fan. But this is not your typical unicorn and princess tale. No princesses to be found and it is just, plain funny. My older daughter wanted to buy it to give as a gift to her little sister for her birthday. So now it is in our permanent collection, and I'll probably buy a few more as gifts for other kiddos in the same age range.

I purchased this book for a 5 year old who was able to read most of the book with some guidance. This book is adorable in story concept and illustrations!. Great for imagination, believing and moral. I also purchased the sequel by Amy Young, A New Friend for Sparkle. I loved the glittery lettering but it is only on the paper cover, not the Hard cover which wears easily. Great Book for Unicorn enthusiasts!.

I have been disappointed by many books. Even books that have great reviews I have found lacking. I would say this book is fairly short and pretty simple, but it has a sweet little message about how sometimes we grow to love somone even more the more we get to know them.

Ironically this book was a perfect fit for our daughter. Dark curly hair, unicorn obsessed(and had asked the Easter Bunny real unicorn), and her name is Lucy. When we read this she loved it, even named her stretchkin unicorn the Bunny brought Sparkle. Great story and cute pictures.

This book has adorable illustrations and a cute story. I love the size of the book as it is easy for my toddler to hold and turn the pages herself. It isn't always easy to love someone but you can always find good qualities, this book shows you just that - although Sparkle wasn't the Unicorn she wanted, he still made her laugh!

Pretty pictures and a cute tittle thatâ€™s how I can describe this book. Your better offf buying NOT NORMAN a goldfish story same concept better story.

This book is just a cute and sweet story about a girl and her unexpected goat.The illustrations are fabulous and the story is adorable with a sweet message.I bought this as a gift and was really happy with it.

Well, this was my first Kindle Single. Guess I should've researched the purpose of Singles first but I jumped the gun because this one sounded so interesting. In the end, it left me a little frustrated because I discovered... ta-da! A Kindle Single is SHORT! This was basically a medium to long-ish sized magazine article. It outlines how cool the discovery of Disfarmer's work was, what a gem it was, how unusual and mysterious he seemed and then how hard it was to research him and find a publisher or supporting information.Just when it started to really roll (they began to interview some of the subjects), up popped "THE END." What?! Is a Single just an ad for a larger book? This Single definitely left me with more questions than answers. What else did they find out for the larger, coffee table book?? How did they decide to describe the times that formed such hardship for the subjects? How about a few more pictures or at least one photo of Disfarmer himself?Update 12/14/12: I located the full length Disfarmer book at the library. I got all of my answers there! If you want to know the story of how this book got published, despite the obstacles in its way, then this single is for you. If you want to see the photos and read more about Disfarmer, and you don't particularly care about the publishing aspect of it, then definitely check out the source material. This is a reasonable, and very short complement to the movie â€œDisfarmer,â€ which I watched and reviewed a couple months ago. As I said in the review, Mike Disfarmer, a small town photographer in the center of Arkansas, had left a lifetime of photographs of the people of the town and surrounding farms, primarily from the Great Depression and the beginning of World War Two, which were essentially worthless, until someone in New York City saw some value in them.Julia Scully who was editor of Modern Photography Magazine for 20 years, was a key link in the â€œvalue-addedâ€ process, but even she had a slog of it, being turned down numerous times. Reading this short pamphlet was worthwhile just learning what the very respected publisher of the somewhat off-beat books, David R. Godine, called the photographs, which is the subject quote. Alas, I have â€œwrestledâ€ with his rather condescending remark, concerning the people of the region, and how they felt it appropriate to appear in their formal pictures. At any rate, he found no value in issuing a book on Disfarmer. Fortunately others have.For Scullyâ€™s short account, 4-stars.

I didn't expect to download a coffee table book, but I did expect to have access to a few more than the four images I viewed in the sample before I looked at before I bought the book. BTW, four includes the cover.Disfarmer was a brilliant photographer and that is clear from the four images shown. So we'd like to see a little more as wew read. Reading the text we learn he was quirky and elusive. Very. Okay. The detective work uncovering who he may have been is fascinating, although becomes a bit redundant. a) He didn't talk about himself. b) He was quirky. So there's a lot of filling in the blanks. But for all your reading, there is none of his work besides those four images in the front of the book. I found this frustrating because I'd find myself wondering about an being discussed and it happens a lot. So after a while, I felt I was supposed to buy the other book...the book with the images.It's a given that it's not practical to buy or sell a coffee table book in Kindle format (particularly at the prices they charge). So if you're going to offer a mini book introduction in a Kindle format AND charge readers for it, give us a little meat please. It makes good business sense, particularly when it's not possible to increase size in Kindle books to view closer, or details, etc and since a reader doesn't get possession of a physical book, all you'd be giving is a few small images on a phone, pc or tablet to view. I mean Kindle doesn't allow resizing of images, so you're limited to the images as they're shown on your device.So reading the book today the text referenced a number of specific portraits and I scrolled forward hoping to find at least one or two of them in the middle maybe?. There had not been even one since beginning the book (all images included can be viewed in the sample). But I didn't know that. So I scrolled and scrolled and ended up at the end and I thought it must be my phone. So I D/L'd the PC kindle version and same thing. Just the four pictures in the sample.Sometimes marketing is too clever for it's own good, and come ons that don't pay off come off as a bit greedy and are not clever OR admirable or desirable.As I see it, I bought this little book with expectations based on the cover photo and the few images shown in the sample. I naturally assumed I'd not only read about Disfarmer, I'd see some of his work too. That is how the book is promoted...with images. I didn't expect to see every piece of work he'd ever done. I did expect, particularly as I'd went from chapter to chapter, or as specific images were mentioned, that I'd see some reproductions, however small. Nope. Not a one. Disappointing.

This book was very interesting. It was about a photographer from Arkansas during depression times. The only thing I didn't like about the book was that you read all about these awesome photographs, but only get to see the one on the cover and one on the first page in the book. I think the author needs to add a small sample of the photographs!

This story of a country photographer named Difarmer helped me to imagine this man's life in part. The story focuses on those who saw genius in his work but it seems obvious that the genius was never known to Disfarmer... he was trying to make a living. We can discover surprise genius in those that are simple is the moral I learned from this short story. Very enjoyable reading.

I ordered Backwoods Genius because the topic intrigued me. What it turned out to be was a sort of behind-the-scenes long article about the difficulties ofgetting a photography book published. I'm a writer so this was interesting enough, but it seems to me that a more in-depth book on the topic could still be done.Plus I wanted to see massive amounts of photos and they only included a few. They were amazing. The whole thing just made me want more. With these smallKindle editions you just get what you get sometimes. I'm glad to have learned about Mr. Disfarmer and want to know more reading forward. I hope someone tackles thebig picture.

I gave "Heart of a Lion" 5 stars because:1. ... It captured my attention and interest immediately, in the first few pages; I read it in 2 sittings (literally) - I didn't want to stop reading;2. ... The plot and the characters were believable;3. ... The narrative descriptions made me feel as though I was right in themiddle if the story, a participant not just an observer;4. ... In my nearly 65 years of life I have had a number of experiences which I could identify with various experiences of several of the characters;5. ... I was impressed with the manner in which the characters, some more than others, interpreted their interaction with our Creator - it help me see new ways to understand old truths;6. ... I felt as though I had worshipped as I read "Heart of a Lion;"7. ... Also, as an aside, the grammar and story continuity were superb, causing no challenge to my being able to focus on what was happening in the story;I would recommend this book to anyone who might have ever wondered what it might have been like to live in the days before and just after the Flood. This novel is appropriate for teens through senior adults.Be prepared to laugh, cry, hold your breath and be amazed as you discover the "Heart of the Lion."

I generally enjoy historical fiction, but this book seemed to deviate too far from scripture. Often I found myself simply skimming pages just to finish the story. The author captures well the highs and lows of faith and lack thereof. I could feel the worry that Noah and his family felt, wondering, "are we crazy, have we heard God correctly?"But the inaccuracies were rampant:Scripture says that man was vegetarian before the flood, but the author has them eating meat.Genesis 6:9 says "Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God." But the author presents him as overcome by sexual temptation and unable to separate himself from lust. Can he support this idea? If not, don't mess with God's appraisal of the man. And certainly DO NOT imply that sexual immorality is the norm.I got tired of the author implying that sin came to "helpless men" besieged by immoral women. Sure there are immoral women, but God tells us that sin entered the world through one man - Romans 5:12. There is a dangerous tendency in men in some "Christian" circles to blame women for the sin of man, but God never says this nor treats women thusly.Galatians 3:28 English Standard Version (ESV)There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.I doubt I will read another book by the author.

I have always loved Gilbert Morris' novels which is why I bought this one. However, he did not hold up to his usual standard of excellence. When anyone attempts to write fiction based on a Biblical character, they need to be very careful to stick to what is Biblically accurate. As has been pointed out in other reviews, he had them eating meat before the flood. He also mentioned seeing lights that shone like the rainbow. How did they know what a rainbow looked like before the first rainbow occurred AFTER the flood. I also don't believe that there was rain and thunder storms before the flood. He told a good story which held my interest but after reading some of these inaccuracies I was disappointed. I will stick to reading his books that are historical fiction, but not based on Bible characters.

The author had a good plot, but seemed to be honing his writing skills as he wrote. The first part of the book contained strange similies such as a man belching like a frog that boomed. Also, the author had Noah eating meat, even though Genesis says only after the flood that animals would be good for eating. Also, he had Noah's son being born before he began the ark and one of them even in charge of engineering it. But the Bible says that Shem, the oldest, was 100 years old two years after the flood. Since Noah took 100 years to build the ark, Shem wasn't even born until two years after Noah began building it. Also, he talked about flat land at the bottom of the mountain with emerald grass, then said the land was rocky and mountainous.I did appreciate that he went into Noah preaching before the flood and life aboard the ark. I have read two other books about Noah and, though one was superbly written, neiter covered these two things.
