This was easily the book I referred to most in my Master's paper on fair division. It covers a lot of topics, including envy-free and equitable division, fair division by auctions, and fair division by elections. The authors devote a chapter to their favorite method, the so-called "combined procedure" that is equitable, envy-free, and Pareto-optimal for two players and would be invaluable to any divorce lawyer.For those accustomed to reading mathematics or economics, this book is readable. For the layperson, it might be a little bit too technical in spots. While it has many practical examples, it isn't really a fair division manual for the do-it-yourselfer. But it's as close as you're going to get, for now.

Steven Brams and Alan Taylor accomplish something quite interesting and worth paying attention to. They move concepts traditionally treated in policy debate and law with simple hit-or-miss human judgment and discretion into concrete analyzable mathematical processes. I was not expecting to enjoy San Gervasio very much, as it is less spectacular than Tulum or Chichen Itza, but this guide book helped make it a highlight of my trip. I will suggest you do not rent a bicycle to get there from San Miguel; it's not at all a bad ride but in the heat was exhausting and there are limits to how much energy and water I want to dedicate to the bike ride and still give full attention to the ruins. On my second visit I took a taxi from the southern hotel zone (near El Cedral) and had the driver wait the 2-1/2 hours I spent in San Gervasio, for $85 US ($60 from San Miguel). It was my second largest expense on the island (after dive-boats) and I initially thought it sounded more expensive than necessary. But after looking at the price of at renting scooter or car (for which I had no other real need), I am glad I went back in a cab the day after riding out there on an old misfit one-speed bike (having arrived just as they closed the entrance gates).I had doubts about bypassing the gauntlet of licensed "guides" clustered at the entrance gate, whose gov't issued badges suggested competence or legitimacy (when will I learn?). But I figured I'd go back and hire one if I felt the need, so I started doing the self-guided tour from the book on my own. At the first structure I encountered a large group of tourists attending to a guide, who was entertaining them with a marginally lurid description of this building as being the temple of fertility-goddess Ixchel and how Mayans came here to get married and consummate (referred repeatedly as "hoochie-koochie") right on the six "bed-like" platforms in front of us. The tourists enjoyed this but it was evidently total nonsense. The plaques at each structure, which were referenced in the Guide book, clearly described how this structure had evolved and who had used it and how, to the degree archaeologic study could say. There was zero correlation between the plaque & Guide book version vs. what the paid "guide" was telling the crowd. And apparently because of the 95% humidity and 95Â° heat, and the mosquitoes were so unseasonably bad (the Mega store in San Miguel ran out of repellant) and the crowd included small children, the "guides" didn't take the tourists to see the largest and most impressive structure, (a miniature of the iconic "pyramid"-ish structure at Chichen Itza) which really WAS where Ixchel was worshipped, but was 500 yards deeper into the jungle. I was glad I brought plenty of 100% DEET and the head-net I use for bugs when I backpack. I only saw one other couple out there at this structure, and was touched that someone had left a bunch of flowers carefully wrapped with ribbon on that structure.The book had far more Cozumel-specific detail than any of the many books I have found on credible Mayan history. This book is said to be available at the entrance gate for $10 US, but I did not see it in the gift shops there. I did see it at the La Cinco Soles chain store but I think it cost much more there, and was a cheaper repro (smaller and thinner paper) compared to the one I got from Amazon.

This was an excellent book to read prior to visiting the site. It gave a great historic background to what I'd be visiting, then a wonderful guided tour of the actual site. Much more insightful than just walking around. This book, coupled with the guided tour, was an extremely well-rounded education. I strongly suggest it to anyone.

Mayan Ruins gives in-depth information about your visit to San Gervasio. However, in addition, I would have liked photographs, and labeled diagrams to guide us on our way in a country we're not too familiar with. Regardless of its minor shortcomings, this guidebook, combined with Mapquest and CruiseCritic gave us all the info we needed for a wonderful day at San Gervasio. The background information provided on these ruins is well-worth the small cost of "Mayan Ruins of San Gervasio."

It was very helpful to read this before going to the ruins.

One thing I like about Mr. Cunningham is that he is sane. His books really reflect that. Most of these self defense / prepper / defense books are really just entertainment where you can sit back and envision yourself being Rambo in some dangerous situation or apocalyptic after-world.This book (and his other books) are written for people who have real lives with family, kids and mortgage payments. Protecting Your Homestead is a basic book intended for people who live in an area where there is some space around them. It assumes that you have little knowledge of firearms and that you will need to defend against things like animals attacking livestock, rabid animals and possibly humans. It gives good, common sense information on weapons and how to use them. Cunningham is a well known firearms instructor so his books contain good information on weapons manipulation and deployment. He also covers safety and selection. The focus is mainly on shoulder mounted weapons like rifles.While I'm .at it I would like to recommend Mr. Cunningham's other books on self defense and shooting. I have several relatives who had no experience with firearms but needed to get a gun for self defense. Besides helping them select a firearm, teaching them how to use it and taking them to the range, I also give them a copy of one of Cunningham's books.If you have a plate carrier loaded with 30 round mags sitting next to your M4 carbine which has a Trijicon MRO and a side mounted 1000 lumen light next to your bed -- this book isn't for you. But if you have no firearms experience or just shot some 22's as a kid get this book - it will be really helpful.If you are a normal person why do you need this book? Because the country is becoming more violent. Maybe its the changing culture, maybe its sunspots, maybe its chemicals in the water, who knows. I read somewhere , (I've got the numbers wrong but the flavor is right) that back in the late 1920's there were 219 murders in the US for one year (Yes, that's the entire United States for the WHOLE year!). Now, Chicago alone probably passes that by March First. of every year. .Although the more rural areas tend to be safer statistically, they also have more violent home invasions. So, having a firearm, and knowing how to use it, can't hurt. and its probably time to realize that the probability of needing one is high enough that we should put homestead defense preparation on the list of things, like car insurance and fire extinguishers, that it is good to have.

I have lived in the country all my life, rifles and hunting have always been a big part of it. This book really speaks to me because it is a very practical book for putting your carbine to work, not just target shooting. This is a great book for anyone who owns a carbine rifle and lives in a rural location with a real need for defending life on your property from predators (2 legs and 4 legs). Carbine rifles are an option for inside the home defense, but IMO handguns maybe the better choice for some. The Carbine is very well suited for what the author describes as perimeter or homestead defense as well. This book is truly a farmers, ranchers & hunters guild book for using a carbine for protecting life on your rural property.Topics covered range from safety, context, rifle types, sighting & optics, caliber selection, ammo selection, storage, retrieval and efficiently using the rifle to actually defend life. The chapter on zeroing the rifle is a great practical and simple explanation of the principles behind a concept that often gets misunderstood or over complicated, that chapter alone for some may be worth the price of the book. Overall, great book that I highly recommend to any county living carbine rifle owners in need of practical advice and training ideas to enhance your shooting skills.

This is a very useful book. It covers a gap between the CQB for home defense and the military oriented long range shooting topic. I found the chapter of access the rifle in real world situations especially useful and a fruitful area for creating drills to become a better and safer shoot.

Cunningham gives good sensible advice... This should be a basic primer for readiness. I also have most of his defensive handgun books.

I bought this book when I realized that a handgun and shotgun were not adequate for defending my rural home. Very powerful rifles aren't the best firearms for suburban home defense due to over-penetration and close neighbors, but a pistol caliber carbine is excellent for defending a rural home. My rural home is adjacent to a national forest that has healthy populations of black bears and hogs, and they occasionally cruise the property looking for food. I leave them alone, but want to be able to respond if an emergency occurs. After reading this book, I selected a .44 Magnum lever action carbine. for rural home defense.The book covers a broad range of topics related to defending a homestead. Safe firearm handling is emphasized. Realistic homestead defense techniques are presented with clear explanations about why they are recommended. Homestead defense is not close quarters battle in the Middle East. This book focuses on realistic techniques for American homeowners. It helped me make a good decision when buying a rifle, and I intend to practice the techniques described in the book.Amazon Kindle has another book by Grant Cunningham on using a snub nose revolver for defense. It was also an excellent reference.

Let me be clear (where have we heard that before?). I am neither an academic nor a museum professional and only came across this book by accident. However, as a layman I'm very much interested in museums in general, including historic houses and communities, of which my wife and I have visited many and worked for both as a professional (my wife, as a history museum exhibit and program director) and volunteer (myself, as an art museum docent).Let's also be clear that the Guide is not a comprehensive "how-to" on running historic houses. Most notably it does not deal with financial issues or with mission concepts, at least not directly. Rather, focus is on the "visitor experience" and how to draw audiences to historic houses. If I had to pick one phrase to describe what the authors think of most historic house operations today, it would be "too anal" (as borrowed from Freud).The heart of this small book is 132 pages of practical thinking and examples of how to make historic houses more attractive and welcoming to visitors, both by reaching out to the communities in which they live, and by providing memorable experiences to their clients (visitors). Those pages are book-ended by sections that formalize the authors' approach, yet overall the writing and ideas are readily accessible to those outside the academy, for whom the book has obviously been written. The authors point out that historic houses are seeing declining visitor numbers, and their purpose is to help these institutions reverse that trend. They also admit that while some of their ideas are research-based, others are mere conjecture, and they invite the museum community to contribute to their ongoing "anarchist" project.Although the "anarchist" tag is catchy, I'd say Ryan and Vagnone are radical rather than "anarchic." I hate to use this phrase because it's become a cliche, but what they are really asking house museum people to do is "think outside the box" (house). Ideas are divided into five categories: (1) reach out to, which means become involved with, the surrounding community; (2) focus on communications, understanding that communication with visitors is a two-way street (what your visitors tell you is just as important, if not more so, than what you tell them); (3) somewhat related to the number (2) as I see it, make the historic house a shared experience in which visitors are invited to participate in the house experience through their experiences; (4) take a holistic approach to the house and its objects/artifacts (and its history, implicitly); and (5) loosen up and take a practical, realistic approach to preservation and hard assets. I hope this is a fair summary.Clearly (again) not all that the authors suggest is going to translate perfectly to every historic house -- some might think, "Whoa, we can't do that," and in some cases they'd likely be right. But, think hard about all this "stuff," that's the message I get. Finally, I'd add that many of the authors' suggestions, such as encouraging your tour guides or docents to go NUDE, are translatable to other kinds of museums. Now, if that doesn't make you want to read the book, I'm not sure what will.

The Anarchistâ€™s Guide to Historic House Museums offers fresh ideas for museum administrators and staff to evaluate and improve the visitor experience to their historic house museums (HHMs). The authors, Franklin D. Vagnone and Deborah E. Ryan, use a variety of HHM case studies to illustrate their points. Each chapter in the book opens with a thought-provoking quote by a museum representative that the authors explore throughout the chapter, offering insights and recommendations for making HHMs relevant to the community and meaningful to the visitor. The authors define a key problem on p. 59: â€œFor many HHMs, it will initially be difficult to find â€˜a place of relevance and meaning, to genuinely contribute to building better communities and serving the needs of individuals, and to define the new normal in a world that no longer derives knowledge from objects, looks to institutions for answers, or defines reality through materialityâ€™.â€ The ideas and suggestions presented in the book apply not only to HHMs, but to many different types of organizations. While I was reading The Anarchistâ€™s Guide, I visited a well-known HHM in Manhattan and experienced many of the elements it described that detract from the visitor experience. I came away thinking the director should really read this book. During the same week, I visited a small, state-funded museum with a limited collection, yet I got the impression that the museum administration had definitely read the book and successfully implemented many of its suggestions to increase visitor engagement. The difference between the two experiences proved to me that The Anarchistâ€™s Guide to Historic House Museums is a useful tool for HHM administrators and staff to improve their institutions and remain relevant.

Great source for ideas about reframing cultural heritage institutions. Definitely focused on Historic House Museums, but a lot of what's being talked about could be applied to archives, special library collections, historic sites, non-history museums. It's a whole series of little case studies about why we need to stop being so darn precious about everything and aim for relevance to visitors.The way it's organized is a bit off-putting-- for someone who still habitually "guts" books like I learned to in grad school, this book was a little challenging at first. But after reading it through, you get to the point about a third of the way in where you can jump around a bit. Would definitely recommend.

I'm a Museum Studies student and I really enjoyed seeing all the case studies in this book. While it is focused on historic houses, I believe that many of the suggestions are applicable to all museums.

This should be required reading for all docents at all HHms everywhere. I am so thrilled and excited to begin implementing the suggestions in the two Historic Homes I am involved with!!!

Very helpful book by an experienced expert on house museums. Our Group is working on a house museum relating toDr. James Still; his life and times in Medford, NJ. in the 1800's. Nice to know we are not alone and that many others out there have the sameconcerns and challenges.
