About the Author

Andreas Deja was ten years old when he first applied for a job as a Disney animator. The Walt Disney Studios wrote back to Deja telling him that they had no openings, but were always on the lookout for new talent. At the age of 20, he applied again and was accepted. This launched a long and successful career with Disney. Deja has left his mark on some of the most memorable and successful Disney animated features and shorts. His early work includes animation and character design for The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver & Company, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. In addition, he is known for his animation of some of Disney’s most evil villains: Gaston, Jafar, and Scar. The list of memorable characters continues with King Triton, Mickey Mouse, Hercules, Lilo, Goofy, Tigger, Mama Odie, and Juju. In 2006, at the 35th Annie Awards, Deja was awarded the Winsor McCay Award for outstanding contribution to the art of animation. In 2015, he was named a Disney Legend by the Walt Disney Company. Presently, Deja is working on his own independent animated short films and is actively involved in his animation-related blog, Deja View.

This book is awesome!!

Simply Brilliant! This book could NOT have been written by ANYONE else. Andreas KNEW almost all of them. So these are FACTS, not opinions.I worked at Disney Animation many years ago. And I have been waiting along time for a book like this! The way Andreas fills the page with heartfelt stories, and techniques and using negative space to fill with beautiful images. BREATHTAKING! If you're a fan of a Walt Disney, Andreas Deja or animation you MUST buy this book!I can't wait to sit down and start sketching! Not that I can hold a candle to any of these artists. But you can't help to be utterly inspired. Thank you Andreas! A legend animator creates a legendary book!!!

The Nine Old Men, the key animators of the 1940's and 50's, continue to inspire many up and coming animators.Andreas Deja, one of the leading Disney animators of the Renaissance era, knew and was taught by most of the Nine Old Men and writes about their careers and contributions to Disney Animation.Unlike Canemaker's earlier book which chronicled the lives of the Nine Old Men, Deja focuses on their skills and animation style while providing many animation sketches of a few scenes from a given film. I love the craft of these animation drawings. For up and coming animators, this should provide inspiration and insight on how to approach various animation aspects.Deja has hinted on writing about the other "earlier generation" of Disney animators (a book that needs to be written) as well as coffee table books on individual animators such as Milt Kahl (which would be a real treat).A great read for animators and Disney enthusiasts.

It may say "lessons, techniques, and inspiration" but this is more a series of biographies than anything else. If anything, you will glean some teachings imperceptibly by studying the drawings and sequences inside. There are hints of how and why the 9 animated the way they did, but nothing explicitly instructional from them, for obvious reasons. That said, it's a good read, and the drawings are fun to look at... You may even remember the scene or short illustrated.

Over the past 25 years we've seen lots of books written by great fans of animation. This is the first done by a great animator who-- as a result of Divine Fate or cocked up luck-- arrived on the art scene just after the Golden Age of animation had sadly ended. Fortunately for us, Andreas sees himself as the chronicler of that great age, the age of the fabulous Nine Old Men. As is the case, I'm sure, with each of Andreas' hardcore fans, my copy of "The Nine Old Men" was pre-ordered the moment I discovered it was available---and I anticipate waiting at the door soon to greet it with the words, "Hello my new friend, welcome to Hawaii." But in the meantime, forgive me for jumping the gun somewhat to review Andreas' book based on the utterly remarkable "See Inside the Book" appearing above. "The 9 Old Men" appears to be a typical Deja production--- and by that I mean, a pure delight. Anyone who has visited Andreas' blog "Deja View" (itself one of the Wonders of the Modern World), knows this man/boy is possessed of the deepest appreciation for 2 dimensional animation ---so deep, in fact, that his live lectures come across as art events themselves ---somewhere in between poetry readings and improvisational theater. All that enthusiasm and affection is present in the pages of "The 9 Old Men" ---the meticulous selection of extraordinary artwork, the heartfelt exposition (spiced with Andreas' clever "asides"), the astute delineation of the process by which drawings are made to move (in both senses of that word). In 100 years, if anyone wonders what that thing called 2 dimensional animation was all about, all they'll need to do is consult this lovely gem of a book. Actually, as I think about it, Andreas has done something more than that. Something more beautiful. I read once that Gustave Dore, interrupted work on his long planned masterpiece, The Veil of Tears, to design a sculpture for the tomb of his friend and hero, Alexandre Dumas ---a magnificent D'artagnan, sword drawn, standing guard over Dumas' soul for all eternity. This is, in essence, what Andreas has done ---delaying completion of his own labor of love, the short film Mushka, to undertake a similar gesture of friendship to departed friends --only he's erected a safe resting place for 9 great souls, not just one.

I've been waiting forever for this book!! It's so beautiful! I was not disappointed with its content! Detailed a ketches of each artist and great, applicable background stories for any artist wanting to make themselves legendary 😉

I waited a good long time for this book to finally come out. I have been fascinated with Disney's 9 old men and their work for quite some time. I also have been following Andreas Deja's blog, also being a big fan of his storied life's work. I finally received my copy of the book and was not disappointed at all! What a great resource for fans of traditional 2D animation this book is! The insights of Andreas Deja are like no other, he knew these men and worked closely with most of them during his apprenticeship and career with Disney. If you are a fan of Disney, this book is a must have. If you know someone who aspires to me an animator, again this book is a must!!!

Wow! What a beautiful book! I love the way it is organized. Each chapter is a short biography of each animator and the characters they animated in various Disney films. This book is filled with beautiful photos and sketches. A "must have" for future animators. Thank you, Andreas, for writing this wonderful book!

Bill Bryson is at it again, he is back to telling history from an unique and witty perspective. With "At Home" Bryson wanders through his mid-1800s home and offers a bit about its history. I really do mean, "A bit" because while Bill Bryson begins in a particular room, such as the kitchen, dining rom, and etc. but he rarely stays there long. instead we are taken on tangets throughout history. We discover the meaning of words (such a "Chairman" and "Room & Board")that routinely pop-up in our daily lexicon... but when taken singularly... really don't make much sense. Why do we call it "The Boardroom" when it houses the CEO of a powerful company. Bill Bryson provided answers to this and countless other unique question.Final Verdict - while "At Home" really is not a history of the home, but it is a chance to indulge in 300+ of Bill Bryson wit and ecletic tid-bits of information.'4 1/2 stars - A must read for any Bryson fan!

Simply wonderful. I work at Winterthur Museum which is sometimes/often said to be the home of the world's foremost collection of American antiques. Guides were impassioned in their love for this book as it explained in great & wonderful detail everything that wonderful Winterthur is all about.AND it has broad appeal. Knowing that my engineer spouse would find some fascination in it I plugged it into the car's CD player when we were locked in its embrace for 8 hours...& he loved it. We talked about finer points raised in the book endlessly & thoroughly enjoyed both the book & what would ordinarily be a painfully boring trip we know all too well. For our next road trip I've got Bryson's book on 1927....I am just hoping he doesn't read it himself as he isn't the best representative of his own work. If you accept his Iowan birth, he comes across as stuffy & pretentious because of his diction which is full of British overtones having lived there so long. If you accept him as a citizen of the world, he can't honestly represent Des Moines. He should just shut up & write - a lot!

LOVE THIS BOOK! I enjoyed every single page! It's a big book and took me forever because I only had time for several pages each time I picked it up. Learned SO much about the history of homes and of England. I even learned that Christopher Columbus didn't discover North America. I always enjoy a Bill Bryson book. He's an amazing author and has a wonderful way with words. I recommend any of his books. If you want to discover where people used to sleep, the origins of glass, how people lived...you can discover all that and more in these pages.

This is the year I have become a big fan of Bill Bryson! The reporter who was born in Iowa and lived a good portion of his life in Great Britain is a wonderful tour guide to the mundane realities of life and science. In At Home he invites us into the Victorian vicarage where he lived for many years. We tour the home exploring each room such as the bathroom, bedroom, garden, dining room, cellar etc. We learn all about furniture, food consumption, clothing, crops, tea, salt, pepper and many other fascinating subjects. He traces the growth of industry and technology as the industrial revolution is examined. We learn much about how people in the past had to deal with disease, death, childbirth, education and existing from day to day. The past was a different country where life was often hard, brutal and short. Bryson is a man of erudition and wit who takes us into how ordinary people have lived in the past. This is a long book which is a great way to learn history and science in a painless way. Bill Bryson is a national treasure and you cannot go wrong in reading any of his books; this book published in 2010 is a gem!

I am really enjoying this book though I find I am forgetting what I've read almost as soon as I have read it! That is because there is SO much information in here! I enjoy Mr. Brysons writing, it is like listening to a charming and well read friend. If ind I prefer to own his books (rather than borrow from the library) so that I can jump in and out of the conversation or refer back to them. This one in particular is crammed full of the intriguing histories of all sorts of unnoticed daily spaces and objects. I feel as if I know my ancestors better after reading and therefore know myself a bit more. Quite a nice book if you like this sort of thing!

Bill Bryson never disappoints and this book is no exception. I read it several years ago, recommending it to everyone I knew. Such fascinating material for him to work with and he works with all material so well. When I saw it was available in an audio book I decided to buy it for an upcoming drive from Florida to New England. We enjoyed it very much. Nothing personal to the author but I know he's an American so I did find his British "ness" terminology a bit annoying. Having lived overseas for many years and knowing many people taught in British English, I full well know how easy it is to pick up their interesting terminology, still I found it somewhat difficult to put up with coming from a mostly American accent. . Overall though I enjoyed the audio version and I recommend it and the book itself highly.

Bill Bryson makes history very accessible with this easy-to-read and beautifully illustrated book. Ever wonder about the evolution of the modern home? This is your book! Bryson takes us through every room and thoroughly explains how they developed from the simple, one-room huts of our ancestors to the multi-room, multi-story homes of today. Everything about every room is delved into, from plumbing fixtures and appliances to tines on forks and table manners.

I love the flexibound binding. I think this binding will result in the book's pages not coming out eventually as it is well used in the field. The paper is thick, white, glossy and has brilliantly colored pictures that are absolutely beautiful. Not only do the high quality pictures help me identify rocks, it is so beautiful that I just enjoy browsing through the book. I'm a complete novice and love rocks more than I like to admit. But I have to say, that I ALMOST enjoy going through this book as much as going through my rocks.Patti Polk writes in a style so that I remain interested and want to continue to learn. It's no wonder since she wrote the book for novices as she states, "ease of use is a priority, with special emphasis on the beginning collector". I especially enjoyed the sections "Introduction to Collecting Rocks and Minerals", "How to Locate and Collect Rocks and Minerals", and "Use and Care of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones".Who knows, with great books like this that make learning fun, I may get past the novice stage at some point

This is a gem of a book, if you will pardon the pun, and a welcome addition to my collection. I already have seven books on identifying gems and minerals and another twenty or so on where to find them, so what is special about this book? First of all I noticed the pictures, beautiful pictures, but more importantly pictures which I could relate to. In my other books I get an erudite description, but usually the pictures do not look much like the rocks I find or see at shows. Patti has chosen the rocks to photograph so well that they all look like the rocks and minerals I have, or have seen. I found the introductory thirty pages on equipment and practical collecting very clear. If I had never been on a field trip I would now know what to expect: the picture of a flat tire in a remote area is a timely warning that there are risks in our hobby. But it was the 230 pages of examples of uncut materials, polished items and completed jewlery which really caught the eye. The classification and illustration of the various categories of agate is splendidly done as are the other groups and minerals. Bravely Patti has added the 'value' of each item, listed by pound, ounce or gram. This is a very valuable resource, although it may go out of date very quickly depending on the value of the dollar and popularity and availability of each item. It has led me to rethink what rocks and minerals I have now, and to look again at the items which I have partially discarded as my 'yard' rocks. Patti Polk's enthusiasm for our hobby flows through this book and we must be thankful that she has filled a gap in the literature available to rockhounds.

Great photos and lots of information in this book. My mom is a true rock hound and has been collecting rocks, minerals, fossils, etc.. for YEARS and has an incredible collection. I gave her this book for Christmas and it's one of her favorites. She has so many pages and notes highlighted in it now. She carried this book with her on a recent trip to Colorado when she went digging for aqua-marine and rose quartz and all kinds of other rocks. She has years of knowledge and tons of books on the subject -- and this particular book ranks as one of her favorites and she refers to it often!

A great book for your coffee table or nearby your rock collection! Filled with excellent photographs, the author does a great job of covering the basics of mineral and gem collecting. The book does not go into the nitty gritty details of identifying minerals, cutting or shaping gemstones, etc., etc., but rather gives you just enough information to get started. It is written from the author's extensive personal experience and covers most of the topics. I keep my book out and displayed near my rock collection because it is enjoyable to pick up and thumb through from time to time. Even non-collectors enjoy looking at this book!

Very useful for someone who appreciates gems and and dabbles in jewelry-making, but is not necessarily going into the selling side of the business. Information is presented simply and clearly, includes a glossary and many helpful photos. Tells a little bit about the author and her expertise. Also gives interesting tidbits on uses of gems and minerals over the centuries.

Love this book information however, the print is very, very small and light printing. What a plus it would be if this was corrected and printed on non glossy paper. the info is a five star but the print is very tiny.

very informative! perfect for me as a new rock tumbler user. hardness info was very beneficial for determining rocks that could be tumbled together.

I should start off this review by stating that I do not feel that cutting up nature's treasures is always a good thing. I'll not review the lapidary aspects of the book, because save for slicing a piece of agate in half, and polishing the exposed surfaces, I'm not a 'cutter.' Opening a geode is also generally a good thing, just don't monkey with the crystals and matrix to make bookends.I'm an agate guy, so much of the book was like revisiting a dear old friend. This would the book's main strength, if it was not for the museum quality pieces shot with precision and care. The book is all about natural beauty. If you already know of good collecting sites, I still highly recommend the book for its beauty and quality of the images. There is at least one stunner on every page. However, if you don't know "where they are," this book is too vague--dramatically so--in assisting the aspiring amateur with places to look for the good stuff. That's by far the otherwise exemplary volume's shortcoming. It's a great book, but a poor field guide. It's really as simple as that. It serves--what I believe to be its intended purpose--exceedingly well. Give it a sacred spot on your bookshelf. Bringing this into the field may not even be lawful. Don't break the law.

Boethius wrote this while in jail waiting for his execution around 524 - 525 AD. I had never read anything by the man, but this text, short as it is, became one of the cornerstones of medieval thought and influenced countless other authors and thinkers.Boethius wrote it to console himself. In his darkest hour he turned to two things, God and his training in philosophy to give himself hope, to sort through his doubts and concerns. His imaginary conversation with Lady Philosophy shows his education from Athens, his reaching out to God for his final and ultimate source of strength is driven from his belief in the miracle in Jerusalem. This isn't argument for the existence of God, Boethius assumes outright that God exists, this is a book from a man on the ropes, his life in tatters, with no help coming and his death assured. This is the cry of a man seeking hope from the sources that had supported him his adult life. This is from a man that was staring fate square in the eye and refused to do anything except meet it on his own terms. Boethius ends the Roman era with aplomb while planting the seeds of Medieval Scholasticism. The book is easy to read, his arguments clear and straight to the point. He treats the existence of God like the existence of philosophy, both are beyond dispute. But what struck me the most was how timeless his worries and concerns were and how Lady Philosophy's answers are just applicable now; Boethius is relevant today as much as he was when King Alfred the Great set about laying the foundation to recover his civilization.I have no way of proving this idea, but there was a passage that struck me as being the inspiration for one of the well know quotes from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Read this from Boethius: "This very place which thou callest exile is to them that dwell therein their native land. So true is it that nothing is wretched, but thinking makes it so, and conversely every lot is happy if borne with equanimity."And here's Hamlet Act II, Scene ii: "Why, then, 'tis none to you; for there is nothingeither good or bad, but thinking makes it so: to meit is a prison."Too much of a match to be mere coincidence. The book's impact cannot be measured. Boethius himself cast a long shadow against the centuries, his translations and commentaries of classic Greek philosophical texts were used by the educated Christian world during the Medieval Scholastic period and beyond. The Consolation is a fusion of Christian and Classical Greek and Roman thought that quite literally changed the world.

An underappreciated work very much in need at this time. In short, a discussion about what being self cognizant and sufficient allows in comparison to what depending upon fleeting experiences and "things" allows. A comparative evaluation about true happiness versus that which is simply pleasurable. This work was written as Boethius was awaiting his death and as he contemplates the purpose of leading a good life. Incredibly insightful.

... Then said I: 'Verily, thy pleas are plausible—yea, steeped in the honeyed sweetness of music and rhetoric. But their charm lasts only while they are sounding in the ear; the sense of his misfortunes lies deeper in the heart of the wretched. So, when the sound ceases to vibrate upon the air, the heart's indwelling sorrow is felt with renewed bitterness...."This is H. R. James translation first published in 1897. As a younger man, I disdained any version which turned Boethius's unrhymed Latin meters into rhymed English- how could such versions be literal? Mellowed out in middle age, and still unable to read the original, I appreciate James's renditions and imagine them as faithful in their way as any before or since:SONG I. The Thorns of Error.Who fain would sow the fallow field,And see the growing corn,Must first remove the useless weeds,The bramble and the thorn. After ill savour, honey's tasteIs to the mouth more sweet; After the storm, the twinkling starsThe eyes more cheerly greet. When night hath past, the bright dawn comesIn car of rosy hue;So drive the false bliss from thy mind,And thou shall see the true.It is a very edifying work- very worthwhile reading when one is in a serious mood. It is more of a distillation or recapitulation of ancient philosophy (from Plato to Seneca) than bold new thought- Augustine is better in that respect.... And yet wealth cannot extinguish insatiable greed, nor has power ever made him master of himself whom vicious lusts kept bound in indissoluble fetters; dignity conferred on the wicked not only fails to make them worthy, but contrarily reveals and displays their unworthiness. Why does it so happen? Because ye take pleasure in calling by false names things whose nature is quite incongruous thereto—by names which are easily proved false by the very effects of the things themselves; even so it is; these riches, that power, this dignity, are none of them rightly so called. Finally, something which struck me forcibly when I read it a year ago:... But let us consider a few instances whereby appears what is the competency of human reason to fathom the Divine unsearchableness. Here is one whom thou deemest the perfection of justice and scrupulous integrity; to all-knowing Providence it seems far otherwise. We all know our Lucan's admonition that it was the winning cause that found favour with the gods, the beaten cause with Cato. So, shouldst thou see anything in this world happening differently from thy expectation, doubt not but events are rightly ordered; it is in thy judgment that there is perverse confusion.

I admit I'd first heard of this book when reading Confederacy of Dunces decades ago. I thought I should read read it and it was worthwhile ,if not consistently fascinating.I suspect this is a somewhat weird translation , very faux Shakespearean or Elizabethan .Although at times it's deliberately antiquarian tone works. The first half to three quarters of the book are the best. There if your patient you'll find a lot of nuggets of solid moral philosophy and considerable literary charm and imagination. The later part of the book seems overly preoccupied with the problem of free will and how can there be free will in a world where God foreknows all.The fact that I thought I had an easier and clearer answer to this problem than the embodiment of Philosophy did not lead me to think I'm a philosophical genius.Rather I suspect I was dealing with something that deeply troubled the author for reasons I don't understand. You will know you are not in the modern world when you read this but do not for a moment conclude that this books concerns have been rendered irrelevant by modern"enlightenment".

Jerry Siegel was different from most of the other kids in Glenville. While they were playing ball in the street, shooting hoops at the community center, or shopping on 105th Street, Jerry was holed up in the attic with his precious zines. He also loved to take in the movies at the Crown Theater, just a couple blocks from his house, or at the red- carpeted and balconied Uptown Theatre farther up 105th. Scrunched in his seat with a sack of popcorn in his lap and his eyes fixed on the screen, he marveled as the dashing actor Douglas Fairbanks donned a black cape and mask to become the leaping, lunging, sword-wielding Zorro. Jerry admired Fairbanks and all the other leading men—those strong, fearless, valiant he-man characters who took care of the bad guys and took care of the gorgeous women too. Jerry worshipped Clark Gable and Kent Taylor, whose names he would later combine to form Clark Kent.   Jerry usually sat in darkened theaters alone as he absorbed stories, tracked dialogue, and marveled at the characters. After the movies he would walk to the newsstands on St. Claire Avenue to pick up a pulp-fiction novel or a zine. Soaking in every line of narrative and dialogue, he would read the books and magazines cover to cover—then read them again. Turning to his secondhand typewriter, he would dash off letters to the editors, critiquing the stories and suggesting themes for future editions. He would scour the classified sections for the names and addresses of other science fiction fans and send them letters in which he shared his ideas for stories, plots, and characters. For kids like Jerry, science fiction provided a community—a network of fans bound together by a common passion.   One of Jerry’s favorite books was Philip Wylie’s Gladiator. Initially published in 1930, it was the first science fiction novel to introduce a character with superhuman powers. Jerry moved through the swollen river of words like an Olympian swimmer, devouring the description of the protagonist, Hugo Danner, whose bones and skin were so dense that he was more like steel than flesh, with the strength to hurl giant boulders, the speed to outrun trains, and the leaping ability of a grasshopper. Danner’s life is a tortured pursuit of the question of whether to use his powers for good or evil. That made Jerry think about how hard it was to choose right over wrong.   Then there was that unforgettable image of the flying man—the one he had seen on the cover of Amazing Stories. Jerry would hang on to that image for the rest of his life. The flying man, clad in a tight red outfit and wearing a leather pilot’s helmet, soared through the sunny sky and smiled down on a futuristic village filled with technological marvels. From the ground, a pretty, smiling girl waved a handkerchief at the airborne man and marveled at his fantastic abilities. In this edition of Amazing Stories Jerry saw a thrilling new world of scientific advances and social harmony— a perfect green and sunny utopia to be ushered in by creative geniuses with more brains than brawn, more natural imagination than school-injected facts, more good ideas than good looks. Jerry wanted to help create that utopia. Luckily, he had a partner in his quest.

I liked this book a lot. The reading level is clearly at a youth level, but not childlike. I read it both for my own sake and as a grandparent. I learned a lot of history type information about the creators of Superman as well as the history of the KKK. It dawned on me I did not really know a lot about the actual history of the KKK.In regard to resisting the KKK, I had heard of Stetson Kennedy. It now seems my knowledge of him was slightly inaccurate and exaggerated. However I am quite sure he did a lot of good.I feel discussing a matter like the KKK without any racial terminology would be difficult. It is possible that certain terminology SHOULD be used so the issues can be clearly understood. Nonetheless I personally would not want a child to read this without parental input. My own children are now grown. I can still vividly recall one of my children watching a major network news show when a discussion of the "N - word" came on and the actual word was used. My child was in early grade school. She turned to me and asked me about the specific word. It was clear to me she had NEVER heard the word anywhere and that made me happy. That contrasted with my own experience as a child in the 1950's. Clearly the word was not being used at school or on the playground. But it was still a sobering experience for me and I was glad I was there to try to answer questions. I remember President Obama saying he thinks every generation gets better about this subject and I agree with him about that.Additionally there is a brief passage about a sub group in the KKK that engaged in a specific and gruesome type of physical torture. Parents should be aware of that. I refer to a brief narrative about corkscrews. There was also a passing discussion about Wonder Woman. According to this work, Wonder Woman, in addition to entertainment, spoke to females about domestic violence. I did not know that and it never dawned on me that Wonder Woman could be used to facilitate such discussion. I appreciate knowing that.

I found this a very readable, fascinating account of the creation of Superman and how this fictional superhero was used to fight the Ku Klux Klan. I've heard the story of Superman's creation before but not in as complete a fashion as is explained here. It's an interesting story about two Jewish teenagers growing up during the Great Depression who desperately wanted to join the comics industry. But neither could ever imagine their creation becoming the phenomenon it did. Unfortunately for them, they turned the copyright over to DC Comics (normal procedure at the time) and as a result didn't receive the benefits they should have. But Superman has throughout his history provided not only entertainment but the idea that good can defeat evil, even the real thing. The Ku Klux Klan may not have started out as an organization of evil but it certainly became one. What I didn't know was that it petered out after their extreme acts of violence got out of control. Reading about the deliberate reincarnation of the organization was a bit sickening, but ironically it seems that the people responsible for its recreation were more interested in money than ideology. Unfortunately, many of those who joined the organization did fully buy into the hate and fear that the organization encouraged and often acted on it, violently.Seeing these two stories come full circle when the Superman radio show decided to have Superman face an organization that clearly represented the KKK. This book represents the impact that even a fictional character can have on the history of a nation. The power of propaganda for good or evil can easily be seen in this story, a story that happens to be true. A great example of the kind of history book that children will want to pick up and read. There is however a lot of text here, more photos and extras would have been nice. But the story is compelling enough to make up for that, but reluctant readers will be put off by the amount of text. A great read though for more advanced readers.

The 1915 revival of the Klan was as much a business enterprise as it was one of hate. It’s sickning to think that as a non-profit shouldn’t be allowed to promote hatered. 80% of the KKK’s revenue went to a PR firm in Atlanta. And that is just in section 2. There is so much more. A very interesting book that weaves the history of the US,, the KKK, Superman, and WWII into a very interesting narative. They helped create many childrens programming techniques that we take for granted today.Well worth reading — easy to read.

While this book deals in a swift, readable, delightful style with this one very meaningful intersection of contemporary history and popular culture, it also tells us a lot about the history of the Ku Klux Klan and the character of Superman--why both came into being, how they evolved over time, and why both are still relevant today. And it also makes you love and appreciate the Man of Steel even more.

I like Helen B's review. I think the "sobriety" we feel when reading about the Klan was a little much for my 11-year-old, who didn't finish the book. I thought it was great and hope he will re-evaluate it as a teenager.

Actually entertaining and interesting to read! Would recommend to any age group that's interested in either comics or the downfall of the kkk in America.

Hate saying I loved this book when I hated that so many young women where abused by so many messed up creeps in the world. I dont quite understand how the interviews were conducted or when. Was it during her captivatey or after the prince was sent for a ride off the cliff. Any way so sad that so many innocent women every day are objected to abuse by so many bastards just because they have money or ball.

I like it for an afternoon of reading. It made me angry for all the lost futures of these women.

Very outstanding..a must read for all three books....opened my eyes to he'll on earth..want to help stop this....God be with these victims

deleted. garbage.

This is an excellent book describing the dreary, unrewarding life of Harem Slaves. Their personal stories of how the got there is both riveting and also horrifying. At times it left me shaking my head in bewilderment when some of these women described their feelings towards their en-slaver. A fascinating read even on it's own.

It was okay. I liked the first two books more. I think because they were just about one character.

Interesting. Good book to read.

Horrifying story, but very interesting
