This IS the definitive aquarium guide. Text and most photos date to the early 30's but tons of insight and information. Has been my standby since early 70's. Just replaced my original copy because nothing out there, new, compares. For those serious about learning aquarium fish be sure and get this to go with any modern publications.

Fantastic, VERY informative book that every aquarium owner ought to own a copy of. Also see a similar but equally as useful book called "Exotic Tropical Fishes". I recommend owning both. You will gain great knowledge and insight into how to properly maintain an aquarium with this book and on top of that, you will learn of many, many beautiful species of tropical fish, many of which you might not necessarily see in your local fish store.

This is the go to reference book for Aquarium owners. This book as been a point of reference since 1935., (which I have the 1st edition.)This printing was the 16th edition, 1953, and was in reasonable condition. I would recommend any edition of this series of books by Innes.

Great book on basic no frills care of aquariums and fish. You may need to experiment a little on the advice. Not all fish respond the same to various treatments and conditions. Book is "Old but not obsolete". I have given this book as a gift many times. By the way I am a Biologist specializing in Freshwater Aquatic Biology and Limnology (the study of inland waters).

I admit I bought this in no small part for the nostalgia factor. My father had this book lying around when I was a kid and I thought it was excellent reference material at the time as I learned about aquariums. So, I decided to get a copy.In that regard, it seemed easy to find "good" used copy cheaply, so I did.The book is clearly dated, but I think I'm surprised how well it holds up. The basic information about the fish is well done and accurate. I'm sure some things aren't current knowledge, but I didn't immediately spot it as I looked through my favorite fish. There was even some historical knowledge about the fish that I didn't know and was interested to learn. The pictures are also good shots and I consider the color plates like works of art. I realize at the time they were done because color wasn't easy in aquariums, but they have a certain style that I think is visually appealing and adds to the nostalgia element I mentioned. I show these color plates to my two year old boys and tell them stories about the fish.In the age of the internet, I'm not sure a general reference book like this is even needed when very good information and pictures can be found quickly with an Internet search. But, I think it's fun to have around. Who knows, maybe someday my boys will want a copy around for the same reasons I do.

Dr William T. Innes is considered to be the "father" of modern day aquarium fish keeping. He set the standard that many fish keeping guides follow. He has cataloged fishes for the aquarium by families and takes the time to distinguish differences among the families. Exotic Aquarium Fishes was published in 1935, and in general still a good source as a guide. Although some of that scientific names of fishes have changed, there are more varieties discovered and the equipment has changed, his approach to managing a successful aquarium still works. Dr. Innes also has done work in locating and breeding many varieties to be raised in an aquarium environment. One fish the Neon Tetra was named after him (Hyphessobrycon innesi). If you look inside the book, you will notice that many of the pictures for each species are drawn or painted. In 1935 photography was not moistly black and white so Dr. Innes drew many species to help describe to patterns and colors. If you plan to get a copy of his book, GET THE OLDER EDITONS THAT WERE PUBLISHED BY INNES PUBLISHING. Later other publishers have tried to expand this classic such as those by Aquariums Inc and TFH, a rival if Innes. These expanded editions ruin the quality of the guide and I'll bet if Dr. Innes was alive today he would be disappointed. There are newer and more detailed aquarium fish guides today, but if you want to read a book from the father and qualified expert of the hobby and trade, this is a wonderful book to get.

Bought it to replace my worn out orig. one I bought back in 1972-73 lots of good info. The Grand father of Aquarium books. Fun to go back and see the book that got me going with fish in the first place

It was my first book in the 60s and i patterned my research and study of desease to and from fish on and it help me more than anyone could ever know Passing on the old book 19th edition with the new 21st edition to my grandkids to make sure they can enjoy the hobby as mush as i did without leranring all the lesson the hard way.

The best book written on this subject !

Being a loyal fan of anything military, I look for Humor in Uniform first when each new "Readers Digest" arrives. So having a collection of these delightful anecdotes is like having struck oil in my backyard!I know there are many more where these came from and I'm fervently hoping for another volume. If I could give the book more than "5 stars" I'd do it, but I guess I'll have to settle for 5

After 33 years in the military my husband always turns to Humor in Uniform in the Readers Digest before reading anything else so when I found this compilation of the stories in book form I grabbed it up to give it to him for Christmas. Then I decided to take it with me on a lengthy plane trip and thoroughly enjoyed it as did a couple of my seat mates along the way when they saw what I was reading, and chuckling about. I think it's still in good enough shape to give it to him and plan to order one for my brother-in-law who is also retired military. There are some stories I remember so it's not all fresh but they were still fun to read again. Not just for military but it helps when you see so much that's familiar.

Disjointed. I can think of lots of things I thought were funny from my days in the military. Somehow this collection isn't as much fun.

I have always enjoyed laughing at funny situations, but the best times, as I remember them, are when similar things occur in my own life. Laughing at oneself is the best medicine for reducing a BIG head about how great we THINK we are.

Maybe just me, but when I read these anecdotes in Readers Digest, they seem funnier. Maybe it's seeing too many at one time that reduces the humor? Still, not a bad book to read after some serious reading gets you down. Always amazes me the funny things to happen or said among our heroes in uniform.

Have a child or friend going through boot camp? This is a great book to send them and help them get through the tough times.

My Dad was in the US Army for 50+ years, so I get a good laugh out of hearing other servicemen/women's funny experiences. Love this book!

If you enjoy Reader's Digest various funny columns -- then you will enjoy this book. Since I ordered all of the Reader's Digest books I don't remember if it was delivered on time from this vendor (since I was not in a rush) , but nevertheless all of the books I received were in good condition.

I highly recommend this book, Preparing for the Glory, by John and Carol Arnott. I attended a conference at the Toronto Airport Christian Church in July 1997. I received an impartation of joy and the Father’s Love. I cried several times reading this book and got excited about the coming tsunami wave of God’s Glory and the greatest harvest of lost souls. John and Carol Arnott are two generals and wise stewards of the manifest presence of God. The suddenly of God’s presence showing up in Toronto on January 20,1994 is still burning in the hearts of many individuals and churches all over the world. Get prepared for the biggest wave of God’s Glory the world has ever seen! 🔥🔥🔥

John and Carol have demonstrated something that was rarely seen before in church history: faithfully stewarding a revival over time. They continue that stewardship in their new book, Preparing for the Glory. Chapter after chapter is written from a solid perspective: faithfulness to the Scriptures and church history and a deep commitment to what God is preparing us for.As someone who had the privilege of being there with them and experiencing my own personal touch in 1995, I listen when the Arnotts speak. I listen because they know His voice and are faithful stewards of what He gives. I highly recommend this book!

I love all of John & Carol Arnott's books. Normally, I take an abnormally long time to read most books (like 6 months!). However, the Arnott's books have captured my attention and interest so easily. I just started reading their newest book, "Preparing for the Glory," that I got for Christmas. I am already on the second to last chapter! It must be that we share a passion and undivided focus on the Holy Spirit's presence! 🔥🔥 If you love the Holy Spirit, you will love this book!Quotes"You see, when the Holy Spirit comes, He wants to take over. He doesn't just want to come on you a little bit; He wants all of you." (pg. 59)"God loves when we "tarry" in His presence through soaking, worship, and reading His Word. Being intentional with our time is a huge key to seeing revival. God also loves when we release our need for control and allow Him to do whatever He wants in and through us. Even if we fall over or look strange, He wants us to be willing to be filled by Him, no matter the cost. God loves us so He wants to be with us. He wants us to focus our attention on Him and to position our lives toward Him. In doing this, we make ourselves ready for revival." (pg 2)

An exceptional work by two exceptional people. May we take their wisdom to heart and let God lead us in His next great move.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I also believe that we are living in a time that a great move of God is on the way. There have been numerous signs given to us from God. These end times signs remind me of scripture in the gospels where Jesus tells the disciples what signs to look for. The body of Christ must prepare itself for this time. It is not time to put on the facades of being believers, we must "be" and "do" what we have been instructed by our heavenly father.

The book is great! I am president of Message of Faith Ministries. We have a Bible School. We are studying the history of Spirit out pourings. We recently finished the study of Azusa St and are now studying Toronto! I highly recommend this book! Dr. Franklin Hunt

As a whole I found this book challenging. The authors, based upon former moves of God, believe we are being prepared for the final move of God prior to the Second Coming of Christ. They gave some excellent suggestions for the Church to follow as this event approaches. An excellent read!.

Fantastic and insightful. Thankyou Carol and John for writing this book. I'm so grateful to be able to glean from your journey and learn wisdom. It has bought me back into true relationship with Jesus and given me a lot to think about and meditate on. With many blessings Alexandra McKenzie

Review

“The authors of this interesting and opinionated book state that the driving force behind the work was Einstein’s comment that “science without epistemology is–insofar as it is thinkable at all–primitive and muddled . . . The last chapter of the book is an excellent exposition of the need for a systems-level model-based approach in biology and medicine.”  (Computing Reviews, 19 February  2013)

The book, Epistemology of the Cell, by Dougherty and Bittner, is a gem. Dougherty is a Professor at Texas A&M and has written extensively and brilliantly on the issue of using systems thinking in the growing field of genomics. Now systems thinking was, in way, started by Norbert Wiener in the 1930s, as he began to model various systems, from the dynamics of nerve fibers to the development of the first artificial arm. Yes, he did the arm, not the physician at Mass General. Wiener also developed the systems to the control the pointing of radar controlled guns on ships in WW II.What made Wiener unique was that Wiener asked "Why". The why meant finding the cause and the result and establishing the connection between the two, establishing the system. Physicists and chemists ask "why" questions, the find the cause and the causality chain. Biologists were for ages asking "what" as people who classified.Darwin broke that chain of biologists somewhat by asking "why" as regards to evolutions and he is pilloried even to this day. Physicians often ask "what" and "how" and do not really want to be bothered by the "why". It is not their jobs to find out why, just find out "what" is wrong and know "how" to fix it. Thus a physician is taught "what" to look for to diagnose prostate cancer and is also taught "how" to remove it. The physician does not know or care "why" the cancer is doing what it is doing. That is epistemological. That, in essence, is a simplification of what Dougherty and Bitter go about to explain. Their book explores the challenges set forth to those exploring the gene and the cell and entices them to think beyond just the what and how to go to the why, the explanation of the process, the system, from cause to effect. The authors have written a treatise which compares a few others which look at the epistemological basis of research, asking the correct questions, and pursuing the best path to answer them (see the work by Winograd and Flores Understanding Computers and Cognition: A New Foundation for Design as a prime example written some 25 years ago). Dougherty has with his colleagues and associate been developing the ideas contained herein for well over the past decade and I have read many of his works, they provide great insight to what should be done.Chapter 1 begins with a discussion of the definition of epistemology, on p. 2. They define scientific epistemology by what it addresses; knowledge and its truth. Then they use Kant to develop the transition from the Enlightenment to today. On p. 4 there is a brief but focusing discussion where he explains the simple Newtonian world maturing into an Einstein one and likewise a Watson and Crick paradigm of DNA/RNA/proteins into the way we understand cell dynamics today, as pathways, miRNAs, repressor enzymes and the complexity of both intracellular dynamics and intercellular dynamics. They rely extensively on a Popperian view of Science, which for those more familiar with Kuhn may tend to have some slight dissonance, but it holds together quite well. All in all, Chapter 1 sets the stage well, both from establishing the necessity to have models which answer why, and to establish the counterpoint of the thinkers who have reverted back to Aristotelian classification as the finders of what.Chapter 2 is a discussion of Aristotelian causality. p 14 states it well with the statement,"explanation must involve a causal relation...".On p 21 they state, "Galileo and Newton do not deny causality as a category of knowledge but they widen the scope of knowledge to include mathematical systems that relate phenomena, while bracketing "questions about nature" of the phenomenon...".On pp 33-34 they have an excellent discussion of Bertrand Russell's work on causality. In Chapter 4, on p 70, the authors use the work of Norbert Wiener and his associate Arturo Rosenbluth on Cybernetics Cybernetics, Second Edition: or the Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine. For it was indeed "the synergy of communications, control, and statistical mechanics..." that set the framework of how we should view cellular and organ dynamics. The authors then given examples of gene regulation. I would have simply stated that every cell and every organic system is a multidimensional distributed random process. One could take a Feynman like approach and posit the obvious, and then fill in the details. The authors work from the bottom up to demonstrate their world view. Namely that when we look at cells we are looking at complex dynamic random systems. Systems we can ascribe states to, states being measurable quantities, which in turn operate on other states in a dynamic fashion. In Chapter 5 the authors start the transition to complex state models. They again rely on the wisdom of Wiener on p 89 to state:"Wiener recognized the difficulties that the mathematical requirement of science and translational science would present for medicine ..."For back in 1948 when Wiener had published Cybernetics, Medicine was still a "what and how" practice. It did not transition to a "why" approach. The translational science that the authors speak of is:"... mathematical engineering, applied mathematics with a translational purpose.."Namely, to translate nature to measurable quantities. Quantities which we can then by knowing the "system" we can then manipulate and predict. We can observe and we can control, the end goals of translational science. In a Popperian sense, the authors address the issue of measuring, predicting, and examining what does not do what we said it would. The key arguments are developed in Chapter 9 and 10. Chapter 9 is the "sola fides" discussion, faith alone, as a mantra to those who fail to understand the system nature of the cell dynamics. The authors, on p 149, evoke William Barrett, the insightful Columbia University philosopher, who wrote The Illusion of Technique The Illusion of Technique , a superb work integrating the principles of epistemology and science in the late 1970s. Frankly, to see Barrett in a book of this type was an exciting surprise, for I had thought that Barrett was falling into obscurity, a loss to many who are struggling with issues that Barrett has thought through decades ago. The authors then on p 148 also discuss the nature of stochastic dynamic systems.Dougherty brings insight via avenues that I found resonated strongly. The discussion on Wiener, where Dougherty, unlike Gleick in what I feel is presented with uninformed bias, sees Wiener as the father figure, one combining systems thinking, clear and built upon strong mathematical foundations, which is then integrated with real biological systems. Although I find their approach insightful and compelling, I would have taken pathways in cancer dynamics as somewhat well-defined stochastic systems. For example, we know the effects of PTEN, the AKT pathway, and the MYC pathway, the p53 pathway, and the complex dynamics which are well described in the readily available NCI data base of pathways. One can use as states the concentrations of any one of these proteins and then state simply that they all interact with one another, the result being homeostasis or if a change cancer. The model is multidimensional, stochastic, highly complex, and strewn with "noise", namely uncertainties. Models have been developed and tested for such cancers as prostate, melanoma and colon. Dougherty, himself, has made substantial contributions to this area. It would have been useful perhaps to demonstrate this approach as well.On p. 163 the authors place a stake in the ground to say what would be expected for those to work in the field, that the books by Loeve Probability Theory I (v. 1) and Cramer Mathematical Methods of Statistics. (PMS-9) be used as standard bearers! As I read that in the book I looked on my bookcases and saw my old well-worn copy of Loeve, which got me through my PhD. Cramer was my core text for my introductory course, but then again it was MIT. Thus they set a high hurdle, but a necessary one for those to work in the field. My first book, Stochastic Systems and State Estimation (Wiley, 1972) Stochastic Systems and State Estimation, in a sense was one of the many which established the bar.The clear strike at the adversaries is set on p. 165. After again referring to Barrett and Kant, the authors end with:"Does anyone really believe that data mining could produce the general theory of relativity?"I think this can be extended. For example many researchers run millions of microarrays and are currently finding hundreds of SNPs or thousands of miRNAs and each time they send out a press release saying they have "discovered" some new "gene" or worse "cause" or "cure" of say prostate cancer or melanoma. In reality one does not know whether this is a marker for cancer, a marker for a predisposition for cancer or just plain noise. What the authors, and others, have argued is that it is essential to have a well-defined dynamic system model of how say PTEN and AKT interact and how they in turn control MYC and where the controls on p53 are in this chain. The microarray analyses should be done in the context of defining the linkages in the state model and not as ends in themselves. The model can then be validated. From such a model we can then see conditions on their way to cancer and conditions representing advanced cancers. For example, recent authors have announced a way to measure PTEN in prostate cancer and laud that as a diagnostic step. In reality by the time PTEN has been deactivated there is most likely a metastasis. Understanding and refining a model is the essence of the "why" articulated by the authors. On p 166 there is a superb critique of what the authors call the pre-Galilean thinkers, namely the biologists who like Linnaeus were really just classifiers of forms and shapes failing to understand why they were what they were. One must remember that biology was all too often just a study of things and a process of naming them and classifying them. The systems which made for these differences were little understood, and worse, beyond the mindset of many who practiced in the field.Chapter 9 is. in my opinion. the pinnacle of their argument. Simply put, we should now begin to perform our experiments within the context of a model. For example, we know many of the pathways of the key genes intracellular, but we do not yet understand the dynamic model that controls them. Thus, when we do microarray tests, we should be doing them to determine the constants in the model and then validate that design. We should, in effect, identify the system, using a system framework, not just some unstructured set of classifiers. We have the structures, now is the time to put them to use.Science is iterative. It is an iterative set of models and refinements. On p 171, the authors refer to Turing's last paper on tessellation, or why zebras have stripes. The paper by Turing was submitted a day or two before he committed suicide and it was done without the benefit of Watson and Crick who were simultaneously doing their work at Cambridge. He intuited intercellular flow of some yet to be defined controlling substances. The concentration of these unknown substances would rise and fall in concentration and as such the color would change. This approach has recently been applied, using a system model of flower genetics, and it explains and demonstrates the control of patterning in a genus of flowers. Having the model for this genus of flower, which is experimentally verifiable, one can then do the inverse, namely the controllability issue of creating desired flower patterns. That also is the essence in cancer dynamics, namely of creating a control or cure, but with a verifiable model. One must have the model, thus say the authors. Thus says nature! If one takes the authors systems approach and applies it to intercellular systems thinking, then it can be argued that the stem cell of cancer theory as has been recently evoked can be readily explained, as readily as those zebra stripes! That is the strength of the model posited by the authors. My only negative is the price. There are some 187 pages and the price is well above $100. Amazon does have a better price but not much. That is over $0.60 per page, and for that I would blame not just Wiley, but the IEEE, which somehow has all too inflated prices. This book is so insightful that the barrier to entry should be more modest. However, it is worth the insight at any price however. And one last nit. The work of the authors should also shine a light on macroeconomics, which suffers not from a surfeit of models and mathematics, but from any ability to validate them, just look at the current state of the economy. Thus what biology brings from data to systems, macroeconomics brings from systems to reality. Both have to merge and be able to be predictive. We are approaching that in biology, especially with the insight of the authors, it is a pity that such has not yet passed the minds of those who opine on the world's workings.

[For full disclosure, the reviewer is a colleague and personal friend of one of the authors.]This book is a philosophical disquisition on the Epistemology of Science, as it relates to the interface between Engineering on one hand, and Biology and Biomedicine, on the other. The book is written by two accomplished scientists: a Mathematician (Dougherty), with a long career in the Engineering, and a Biologist (Bittner). These distinct backgrounds reflect the multidisciplinary foundation of the book. The philosophical outlook of the book is that of the revolutions in Science and Engineering that occurred in the first half of the 20th century, including Einstein's Relativity Theory and Quantum Mechanics in Physics, as well as the views of Biologist Conrad Waddington and Engineer Norbert Wiener, both of whom advocated a Systems approach to Biology. The authors argue that this epistemology, based on a positivistic/idealistic framework, is the final, mature foundation of science, which is the outcome of a long process that began with Galileo and Newton. The authors argue that Biology will become a successful, mature science only if it adopts this same epistemological view of science. The book supports its viewpoint with many famous quotes by eminent scientists throughout the text.A brief outline of the book follows. Chapter 1 introduces the main epistemological framework of the book, stressing an idealistic view, based on mathematical modeling and prediction, as opposed to a realist view, based on "everyday" explanation. It also emphasizes the limits of Science, and its pragmatic nature. It likens the current state of Biology to that of Physics at the end of the 19th century, and argues that Biology can only make the leap to a mature science if it can resolve the same epistemological conundrums that Physics had to face in the early 20th century.Chapter 2 is a comprehensive discussion of the evolution of the concept of causality in philosophy, from its beginnings in Aristotle through its definitive (according to the authors) formulation, proposed by Hume, going through the views of Francis Bacon, Galileo, Laplace, Kant, Mill, Einstein, Russell, and Reichenbach. This is important to the book, the authors argue, as the pre-Galilean view of Science (combated in the book) had as a distinguishing feature a naïve realist view of causality.Chapter 3 focuses on the scientific method, and its evolution from its beginnings in the ancients through modern 20th century Physics. It emphasizes the role of the controlled experimentation and prediction, a breakthrough credited to the early modern scientists, such as Bacon, Galileo and Newton, and of Mathematics as the proper language of scientific knowledge. It classes the concept of "explanation" as rationalistic and as an impediment to modern science: explanation, as causality, must remain outside the arena of scientific discussion. This chapter emphasizes again that Mathematics is the proper, and the only safe, language of science. Finally, it highlights the importance of an epistemology including uncertainty (expectation) as opposed to a deterministic epistemology (based on causality).Chapter 4 discusses the abstract regulatory processes of the cell as the essence of the "secret of life," as opposed to the mere physicochemical components that implement them; in this way, biology is separate from physics and chemistry. This is a "systems" view, first proposed by Waddington, as the authors point out. From this, the authors argue that this essential component of the living cell must be modeled as a stochastic dynamic system, with the accompanying issues of synchronicity, fault tolerance, and parallelism present in physical plants. This chapter requires some mathematical sophistication from the reader in its later sections. It discusses the important notion of canalizing genes, and goes on to survey briefly the "master-slave" model, intervention in probabilistic regulatory networks, and the "intrinsic multivariate prediction" phenomenon, all studied by the authors in previous scientific papers. Finally, the material of the chapter is analyzed from the epistemological perspective outlined in earlier chapters.A definition of translational (applied) science is given in Chapter 5. Translational science is identified with synthesis, as opposed to "pure" science, which is concerned with analysis. Synthesis is then identified with the modern engineering approach of Wiener and others. A wonderful quote by Wiener (page 91) summarizes the need for truly multidisciplinary teams in translational science, a goal that is still mostly a prospect at the present time. The discussion is supplemented by an example involving the external control of Boolean regulatory networks.Chapters 6 and 7 are the most technical in the book, dealing with the concept of stochastic validation in pattern recognition (classification), and in the inference of regulatory networks, respectively. Chapter 6 also includes a discussion on the need of a stochastic approach to describe physical systems, and how this can be done using conditional expectation. It also discusses the need of modeling assumptions for validating classifiers (and indeed, in translational science in general). Chapter 7 deals with some of the same issues of validation and performance, but this time for the much more complex case of network models.Chapter 8 is a somewhat acid critique of the current subjectivist and relativistic currents observed in much of 21st century Science, using for that the particular perspective of unreliable methods for classifier error estimation. It starts by reaffirming the overall epistemological viewpoint of the book, through Hume and Kant, and then proceeds to give specific examples relating to classification error estimation, showing that there can be large variances and no correlation between estimated and true errors. In an interesting twist, the authors compare belief in these techniques to the exhortation to believers, made by early protestant leaders, to rely on faith alone (sola fides = faith alone or, more to the point, "blind faith"). This is followed by warnings on the "illusion of technique" offered by modern computer technology (this is, incidentally, in no way a luddite manifesto) and the attempts of expanding the scope of the scientific method to suit one's desires. Finally, Chapter 9 is an essay on the limited prospects of medical intervention in the absence of a systems approach, citing many examples to support this view, and thus returning to the main theme of systems biology proposed by the book.

Two of the leading figures in translational genomics and computational systems biology, Dougherty and Bittner have taken on a subject that is at the very core of modern biology. Evoking Wiener and Rosenblueth, the authors draw on their own immense experience in systems theory and engineering, molecular biology and biochemistry, to guide the reader through foundational issues that, if ignored, stand squarely in the face of progress in biology and medicine. This elegantly written book is unique in its scope while achieving the depth that the subject matter deserves. Every systems biologist ought to read this book.

A burned out high school science teacher on summer break is on his way to Yellowstone to scatter some of his son's ashes. He has a breakdown with his motor home, and while waiting for repairs, meets the mechanic's two sons. And this is the beginning of a summer vacation he will never forget. This book deals with several serious topics: Alcoholism; grief, less-than-perfect parenting; debilitating health issues. But in spite of (or maybe because of) dealing with these issues, lessons are learned, wonderful relationships are formed, and unforgettable memories created. The book has a positive message, but sometimes it feels like the reader is being spoon-fed each "lesson". Often there's a whole page of stilted dialogue when a couple sentences would suffice. It's like, the reader is always ten steps ahead of the writer. This is not a book for someone in a hurry. It's for someone who likes to saunter. It's not for someone who wants a book with lots of complicated plot twists or "graphic realism". It's definitely "PG rated" and you'll pretty much know where it's headed before it gets there. So just relax and enjoy the ride.

What I don’t understand is how a writer with so much under her belt does such a lousy job writing. I agree with the other reviewers who have panned this, particularly for the bad dialogue, but what struck me most were all the lame bits of banal description, both in terms of the details she chose to describe, as well as the character actions. It was just tedious to read/hear about mundane articles described in detail, and basic body actions. I mean, why can’t he just fetch the camera from the RV? Why do we need to have the guy tromp back to the RV, open the door, reach into the side pocket, retrieve the camera, stomp back, ad infinitum... I love rich description, but for the love of Pete, describe something we care about, not an ashtray. I got the impression the author was stretching it to make a novel out a plot that didn’t have what it took. I can’t fathom how an editor didn’t level with the author and just put this one out of its misery.

Take Me With You had a steady beginning as August found his camper in need of repairs in a sleepy little town in Nowhere California. The mechanic, a man with two boys, conned him into taking the boys with him for the summer, as he was due to begin a "three month"jail term... (only his second by self admmission- minus two other jail terms of which he'd conveniently forgotten) except it was in reality a six-month term! Of course August didn't learn that until they were well on their way. Of the two boys, Seth (12) and Harold (7), Seth was well mannered, orderly, and curious everything in August's life, while was initially silent but eventually began to speak . His father's behavior was the cause. Throughout the three months of summer, the trio plus August's pooch, Woody. Have adventures in national parks as they look forward to the three months of school they would have in August's care. Wes, father of the young boys, was a alcholic and his current prison sentence was six not three months, which changes yet again. The boys returned to their father but secretly corresponded with August for eight years. With his disability. August couldn't carry on the parks tour, so Seth made a deal to buy the old camper, so the trips, goal of which was to spread small amount of August's son's ashes in the nation's parks , continued. This beautiful story shows the bonds that are formed BOTH ways, and the growth that comes to all. The reader is left with the feeling of a wonderful union among the campers....,and a hope that they will have each other for years to come!

Loved the first two-thirds of this book about “burned-out teacher August Shroeder” who has been sober since his nineteen-year-old son died. Every summer August budgeted for gas money and would take a trip in his motor home. This book is about the trip he planned to take with his son Phillip to Yellowstone Park. Instead, the trip he and his little dog Woody make is a memorial trip. It is all derailed when his motorhome breaks down.In the several days that it takes for the mechanic, Es, to get the motor home running again, August meets Seth and Henry. They fall in love with Woody and enjoy August too. Seth is a super responsible 13? Year-old, Henry is a 6 yr. old who no longer chooses to speak. When their father had to spend some time in jail due to a DWI, the boys had to go into foster care. The story doesn’t elaborate, but Henry hasn’t spoken since. The motorhome will be ready to go by the next day when Wes asks August if he will take his kids on the trip for the summer He has to go back to jail and needs a better place for his boys—just for the summer. August intends to refuse, but at the last minute finds himself telling them they can come.Seath is enthralled with a world of parks and scenery he’s never experienced in his life. Mountains, canyons, lakes and rivers. Seth loves climbing, but Henry is timid. August’s wisdom helps the boys to drop some of their coping skills and start to become more of who they were meant to be. The insight and conversations between these three makes this book a treasure.I’ve only read 2 of Catherine Ryan Hyde’s books, but both of them had older men cast as mentors for young boys in a heart-warming and meaningful story. But half to two-thirds of the way through the book there is a disconnect while the boys move on with their lives separately from their older friend. When they are brought back into relationship, I didn’t feel the same connection. It’s maybe the only way the story could be told, but my interest in the book waned somewhat after the relationships resume.Still this was a book I didn’t want to put down. I love books with older people and kids in relationship. Wisdom meets energy and enthusiasm and it’s a combination meant to be.

Nowhere Near You

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—This follow-up to Morris Award finalist Because You'll Never Meet Me picks up the story of pen pals Ollie and Moritz right where the previous novel left off. Separated by an ocean—and by unusual health conditions that could threaten both of their lives should they ever meet—the teenage boys continue to exchange letters as they encounter new challenges and uncover more secrets about the laboratory where they spent time as children. For the first time in his life, Ollie has left his isolated cabin in the woods to join his doctor on a road trip to visit other experimental "Blunderkids" from the lab. Meanwhile, Moritz is adjusting to life at a new school as well as a burgeoning relationship with fellow student Owen, who is deaf. As in the first book, the strength of the tale lies in the unique bond between Ollie and Moritz, both of whom are forced to confront their limitations and face their fears about their relative places in the world. The boys' voices remain distinct, and the dual narration once again helps to build tension, though the story loses some of the freshness and novelty of the first one. More firmly rooted in science fiction, the tale also ventures toward the allegorical, which feels a bit heavy-handed at times, and the ending leaves loose a few threads that beg for a third installment. VERDICT Fans of the first volume will likely enjoy reading this new chapter in Ollie's and Moritz's lives.—Lauren Strohecker, McKinley Elementary School, Elkins Park, PA

"Unforgettable and distinct voices . . . A fantastic novel that will be especially resonant for readers who struggle with being or feeling outside of 'normal.'" - starred review, Booklist"This brilliant follow-up to a clever and unexpected novel does exactly what it should in keeping the same epistolary format but taking these two unforgettable characters way out of their comfort zones and toward lives that are lived rather than waited out, and the result is powerful stuff indeed." - starred review, BCCB"Ollie and Moritz continue to be compelling characters, struggling to figure out how to use their talents while living within their limitations. In many ways, they are no different than most teens, just a few steps further along the continuum." - VOYA"Part mad science, part convincing portrayal of the volatile, resilient nature of friendship and grief--and that, as Ollie says, is not science fiction." - Kirkus Reviews"The strength of the tale lies in the unique bond between Ollie and Moritz, both of whom are forced to confront their limitations and face their fears about their relative places in the world . . . Fans of the first volume will likely enjoy reading this new chapter in Ollie’s and Moritz’s lives." - School Library Journal"The pacing is impeccable, as letters move from sunniness (Oliver) and bemused distance (Moritz) to both writers exploring their darkest fears, experiences, and worries for their futures." - starred review, BCCB on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"A witty, unusual take on friendship and parlaying weakness into power." - Kirkus Reviews on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"Ollie and Moritz are memorable characters with engaging and often humorous voices. . . A quirky, almost whimsical feel even as Thomas grounds it in heartfelt and often painful emotion." - SLJ on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"The two may be eccentric outcasts, but their conflicts, heartbreak, and eventual bond form a relatable and engaging narrative." - Publishers Weekly on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME"It’s the distinct, deeply memorable voices of Ollie and Moritz that make this novel an affecting page-turner." - Horn Book Magazine on BECAUSE YOU'LL NEVER MEET ME

This is such an exciting mix of genres. It's like realistic sci-fi, if that makes sense. We follow the two main characters, who have fantastical problems, as they try to make their way into the world. Imagine Eleven from Stranger Things trying to go to high school. It's told through letters the two write to each other, and is a story of a strongly-bonded friendship. It would help if you read the previous book though I don't think it's entirely necessary.

I have been waiting not-too-patiently for this sequel to Because You'll Never Meet Me. I loved the friendship between Ollie and Moritz and couldn't wait to see where their adventures took them. I was not disappointed - the book picks right up and sucks you into their world where you cheer for them, roll your eyes at them, or want to hug them as they help each other grow up through their letters. The new characters we meet are well-written and full of depth. I've been recommending these books to everyone I know.

The second in a fantastic epistolary series. The book follows the previous Moritz and Ollie with visits from additional Blunderkids. The book is built on weird science and long-distance friendships, fully capturing the messy and enheartening nature of both. I cannot say enough good things about it.(Full disclosure, I know Leah personally. She is a huge dork.)

Great read! Different plot line than a lot of stories that tend to follow roughly similar story lines. Really enjoyed it and LOVE that Leah is from northern MI!!

It arrived on time and in perfect condition. I would recommend. Nice price too.

Love it.

The ending left a big detail open so I'm wondering if there will be a third book in the series.I still love the characters and I really liked the new ones Molly and Arthur. One thing I wish there was more of was Ollie visiting more Blunderkinder. He only met two and from the description I was expecting something more. Another thing I missed was Moritz's dad. He only had a few tiny parts in this one.Outside of that it was a solid follow-up and the ending will bring a smile to your face for sure. I wish Ollie all the best. He is the sun after all.

Thank you Netgalley and Bloomsbury publishing! Can I give this ten stars? Is that maybe a thing? GUYS this book blew me away. This is the follow up to Because you’ll never meet me which was fantastic. When it comes to books with more the one sometimes the second book ends up dragging. This did not happen.Nowhere near you had me hooked from start to finish. It still follows the letters between our favorite boys Ollie and Moritz. This installment brings us some new scenery and along with it some new characters. Author was my most favorite new character to meet he was so down to earth I just loved him so much! Molly and Klaus were just fabulous! We also meet Bridgett, Brian, and some adult characters. I loved them all! These characters brought so much to the story I couldn’t imagine Ollie and Moritz journey without them.Let’s talk plot, OH MY FREAKING LANTA, I was on a rollercoaster of emotions. First I was happy, hopeful, sad, scared, ALIVE, loving, torn to pieces because nothings right in the world, to hopeful. I would not have had it any other way. This was dare I say it even better than the first which I did not think was possible. I can begin to explain the weight this book holds in my heart now. I need more time with this characters so PLEASE say there will more because that ending. If I am being honest I finished this book and sat in my chair a cried my eyes out. I cried of sadness for a moment but mostly I cried with hope. I could live with this being the end but I hope, pray, and dream there will be more because so many questions are still open. This was a fantastic read. Everyone needs to get their hands on these books. My heart may never be the same. 5 fluffing starsFavorite Quote“I thought of you calling me good. I thought of you, just you—“

Great book that makes a compelling case for free trade.

Irwin makes international trade easy to understand.

I encourage anyone who is skeptical about the self-professed economic know-it-alls whose claims run counter to the long-established wisdom not only of Adam Smith and David Ricardo but even that of more contemporary economists like Milton Friedman or Thomas Sowell. Free Trade is a good thing - it is advantageous to each side of all trades conducted by mutually voluntary consent. I haven't read all the way though this yet but I am already pleased to see that Professor Irwin has addressed many common fallacies, misinformation and worries around that derogatory term "Globalism."I wasn't sure what to expect exactly, perhaps an assessment citing the truths and falsehoods of each anti-free trade propaganda claim. I did suspect that there would be a predominant appeal to collectivist justifications - 'better for the common good' - and so far that's in there too but moderated. In the age of Trump, where economic nationalism, protectionism and big govt economic central-planning are all just de rigeur, this is a good place to start for the collectivist-brainwashed out there, since Professor Irwin seems to be addressing their contentions more directly. However, even if you are a skeptic and want to hear the other side of the story, the one economists have been explicating for 200+ years - and protectionist sentiment was strong in their times too - this book will give you a solid education and a lot to ponder. Why not five stars? First, I rarely give anything that high of a mark, otherwise it seems meaningless. To improve this book, I would suggest to Professor Irwin to scale back the collectivist justification and place some emphasis on individual liberties - on which the United States was originally founded. It is better for the individual to obtain the best perceived value and owes nothing to anyone else, whether one trades with those of another country, state/province, region, town/city, postal code... or not. Protectionism penalizes anyone who demands the freedom of choice. It benefits some at the expense of many - Milton Friedman noted that the penalty is diffuse, it punishes all consumers. It does not encourage the consumer to buy domestic, it threatens the consumer to buy domestic or be penalized. Moreover, it punishes domestic exporters who will face retaliatory penalties in foreign markets where they are more efficient. Everyone back into their safe space hidey-holes now!Personally, I buy domestic products when they are the better value to me. I will not reward inefficiency and uncompetitive operation just because of some nebulous obligation to pay more for less because it helps my neighbor. I don't make excuses why I cannot compete and I won't accept the same from others. Protectionism is no better than cronyism, government handing out special favors to special interests. By the way, for anyone who believes the myth of the cheap wage country threat - Professor Irwin will demonstrate here how low wages=low productivity; Americans don't earn more money just for the hell of it - minus those helped by minimum wage laws, another bankrupt idea - they produce more: with superior skills, and the leverage of capital investments. Sweatshop factory wages are cheap because that is all they are worth.

This is a comprehensive look at trade. Politicians ignore the facts, and prey on the ignorance of voters. If you vote, read this.
