Starship Troopers

Amazon.com Review

Juan Rico signed up with the Federal Service on a lark, but despite the hardships and rigorous training, he finds himself determined to make it as a cap trooper. In boot camp he will learn how to become a soldier, but when he graduates and war comes (as it always does for soldiers), he will learn why he is a soldier. Many consider this Hugo Award winner to be Robert Heinlein's finest work, and with good reason. Forget the battle scenes and high-tech weapons (though this novel has them)--this is Heinlein at the top of his game talking people and politics.

This is a classic SF futuristic warfare novel that was (may be still) on the reading list at the USAF Command and Staff College where it first got my attention. Written in or around 1959, Heinlein's views on duty, honor, selfless service, dignity, combat unit cohesiveness, future infantry tactics and weaponry, society, women in combat, politics, and even parenting are magnificently woven into a fast read novel written at the high school level (at least the 1959 high school level). A must read for any junior officer or NCO. Great for a military professional development discussion or class. Heinlein was a prolific SF writer. And, I have read a number of his books. But, Starship Troopers is by far the best. If you saw the movie.... I provide you my regrets, although it had a number of budding stars. About the only thing the novel and the movie share besides title is that the protagonist is named Johnnie and the antagonists are bugs.

I first read this book years ago as a child, and in many ways it shaped my entire world view; it quite literally changed my life.I recently retired after 27 years of Naval service, and as silly as it may seem to some, this book was the foundation of my success; in military service, in the lives of countless young Sailors, and in my new role as a civilian. It shaped the character of who I was as a leader of men and women at war.Heinlein may have authored "better" books (according to the critics) but having read virtually all of them, none of the others ever quite so captured the essence of what it means to be both in military service and what those of us fortunate enough to have served all know in our hearts: the true value and moral responsibility of citizenship.

Best WAR story ever written, past, present or future. It is NOT what you saw in the movie, it is SOOOOO much better!!! Heinlein lays out his vision for inter-galactic warfare, but it is really a book about how a boy becomes a man and a person becomes a worthy citizen. Accused by the Hippies of its era for being "Too Fascist" this libertarian fantasy portrays a future where society really is a liberal-globalist paradise run on a capitalist economy, but with the right to vote limited to those who volunteer for military service. It is a future society with total freedom and total responsibility. All wars are in outer space where human colonies run into hostile societies, especially the "Bugs." We get to follow Johnny Rico, a very typical recent high school graduate, as he goes through basic training and enters combat in a wild tech-warrior mech-suit (first imagined in this book) as a member of the Mobile Infantry. if you like HALO, this is where the game world and tech came from. But, it is really a story about a new a better society and how to find meaning for your life through service to humanity. The best scenes are short, but all take place in a classroom, where "Moral Ethics and History" are taught by a veteran with a missing arm. So, ignore the movie, ignore the controversy; just buy this space adventure and ponder why we don't live in Heinlein's perfect society . . . . yet!!"Do you apes want to live forever!!"

Can't believe I waited this long to read it. I have been a Sci-Fi fan for many years. My die-hard friends always recommended "Starship Troopers" and the Forever War as two classics that all Sci-Fi fans have to have read.Well.... I saw the abysmal movie years ago so was not interested. What a dolt. Robert Heinlein's book is, I now agree, a must read classic for all Sci-Fi fans. I can now see the influence he had with current writers of the genre. Between him and Asimov their influence is seen everywhere. Really glad I finally read it. Not as much action as I had hoped for but the other areas where he explores human nature, government and society and an individuals role in all of that was enjoyable and well worth the read. You have to answer those same questions for yourself as you read Rico's experiences and journey from late teen into adulthood.

Citizenship based on merit, not just because you are alive. Citizenship means the assumption of responsibility, greater than the non citizen. Citizens are self starters and self directed. This is somewhat obscure as the story focuses on the soldier who follows orders, but it is a society that decides what needs to be done and the citizen volunteers to reach that goal. There is a movie which is in it's own way more interesting, but largely misses out on the political questions, like they are entirely different stories, as I am not interested in politics I was not expecting the point of view of the book. I like the politics of volunteering to be a citizen, citizenship is something chosen, and that choice is not to get a welfare check. Welfare is just money but marriage is a complex of traditions and customs that shapes your life. Citizenship is a choice to shape your life. I would have liked to see this idea for a baker or plumber. I like science fiction because it explores ideas, this is not the usual battle book, but the working out of a unique conception of the partnership of public/personal. The concept of equality is thrown in the trashcan, and the author tries to put something different in it's place.

Star Ship Troopers was written in 1959 well into the cold war world. I was a high school junior when I read it and was enamored by the war story in it. Several years later, during an especially unpleasant House Unamerican Activities, the science fiction community railed against the content of the book. The book's theory was that a fascist state would function better when humanity was endangered by foreign powers than perhaps some other form of polity. The author took significant criticism and, it is even said that subsequent writers wrote stories to show the opposite was true. The work is well thought out, well written and a fascinating story for either those interested ;in Space Opera or those interested in "what if" politics. I've learned that it is on the list of books for the major military academies. A tribute to a wonderful, thoughtful author and a necessity reading for most everyone interested in the history of the time in which it was written.

Zita the Spacegirl, by Ben Hatke

Review

“For no reason at all, a little red button crashes to earth while Zita and her pal Joseph are out cavorting around. Of course, no one could resist pushing a mystery button, which pops open an interdimensional portal that whisks Joseph away. Zita follows and lands on a delightfully bizarre alien planet, where she sees Joseph being captured by a tentacled, scuba-headed creature. She makes some allies, takes off after him, and zany mishaps and dashing adventures ensue. Any story in which one can escape prison with a tube of "doorpaste" (just like toothpaste, except that it makes magic doors appear when smeared on a wall) obviously puts more stock in wowing imaginations than satisfying logic, and it needs solid cartooning chops to back it up. Fortunately, Hatke's got them, and he doles out an increasingly loony and charming array of aliens, robots, and unclassifiable blobs and hairy things for Zita (herself a cross between Ramona Quimby and a Matt Phelan waif) to encounter. It's fun, plenty funny, and more than a little random. Kids will love it.” ―Booklist“A headstrong young girl makes a hasty decision and finds herself in a galaxy far, far away in this graphic-novel shining star. Confident Zita finds a strange device in a meteor crater while playing with her more timorous best friend, Joseph. Impetuously, she accidentally activates the device, and before they can say "lift off," the duo ends up on an ill-fated planet, with Joseph about to be sacrificed by an alien doomsday cult and Zita determined to save him. Hatke's skill shines: His characters are richly imagined and portrayed, from the loyal, bumbling Strong-Strong (resembling a cross between a golem and an Uglydoll) to the menacing Screeds, an arachnid-like mechanized device that serves an evil purpose. The giant speechless Mouse, who communicates via ticker tape, is especially ingenious. Hatke takes a page from epic adventures like Jeff Smith's Bone and Kazu Kibuishi's Amulet and throws in a dash of intergalactic zest for a winning combination, sure to captivate young graphic-novel aficionados. Be prepared to blast off; this debut is truly out of this world.” ―Kirkus, Starred Review“While exploring a meteoroid crater, young explorers Zita and Joseph discover an unusual device featuring a conspicuous red button. Zita's curiosity compels her to press it, only to discover that it summons an alien creature that instantly abducts Joseph. The fearless heroine follows him to a planet inhabited by Scriptorians, who intend to use him as a ritual sacrifice to prevent the destruction of their planet. In her quest to save her friend, Zita assembles a cadre of unusual cohorts: a giant mouse that she rides; an oversize bloblike creature named Strong Strong; a Heavily Armored Mobile Battle Orb known as One; and Robot Randy. Together they head off to the Scriptorians' castle to rescue Joseph. Along the way, she meets Piper, a fellow earthling traveling through space who becomes an important player in the story. Aptly named, he is part Pied Piper and part inventor but always a smooth talker who alternately assists and sabotages the mission. In order to save her friend, Zita must ultimately risk her own chance to return to Earth. With echoes of The Wizard of Oz, this charming, well-told story has a timeless "read to me" quality that makes it perfect for one-on-one sharing. Adults will enjoy the subtle humor and inside jokes, and children will love intrepid Zita and her adventures. The art is simply delightful: a realistic heroine surrounded by a world of bizarre creatures. Fans of the Flight anthologies (Villard) will cheer for the return of Zita.” ―School Library Journal

I read this to my 3 year old daughter who fell in love with Zita. She wakes in the night, sneaks over and turns on her light, and spends hours flipping through her Zita books. I would rather she sleep, but it's hard to fault her love of books. She carries it everywhere and asks people she meets to read it to her.She loves Bens other books, especially Goblin, Julia, and Robot.

Originally written for the Comic Book and Graphic Novel Review Column at the Fantasy Literature Review Site.Zita the Spacegirl by Ben HatkeZita the Spacegirl is one of those perfect YA science fiction stories that you wish had been written years ago so you could have read it as a kid — which means that you’re gonna want to get this book in the hands of a child in your life. Just make sure you get a chance to read it first. The story begins when Zita and her friend find a strange object that has fallen from space — a square, hand-held device with a big, red button on it. Just imagine what you’d do: Would you press that button? Guess what the young child Zita does? That’s right — she presses the button. Instantly, a door of light opens before her and the arms — tentacles? — of a strange creature reach into our world and grab Zita’s friend. Zita runs away in terror to think about what she’s just seen and what she should do.As you’d expect, she goes to talk to her parents and spends the rest of the book waiting for her parents to figure out some way to save her friend. She is then reunited with her friend at the end of the comic. They live happily ever after. You don’t really believe a word of that, do you? Like many great adventures written for children, we never see the main character’s parents or any other adults on earth, and the young child must take on adult responsibilities. Zita decides she is to blame for her friend’s kidnapping, and therefore she must fix everything. And why not since she’s got the mysterious device? So she presses the red button once again, and steps into her adventure. In this review, I can’t begin to do justice to Hatke’s vivid imagination in coming up with such a wide variety of creatures and machines and inhabitants of the world Zita enters. Some seem kind but are dangerous, some are boisterous but benign, and still others threaten her before becoming her closest allies. In this world we finally see adults, but they are strange and unpredictable and difficult to judge. The story’s tension is created by several factors other than the unpredictability of those she encounters: First, she soon realizes getting back to earth is not going to be easy. Secondly, to make her being stranded even more frightening, Zita realizes that everyone is abandoning the planet because it’s about to be destroyed by an approaching asteroid. And she can’t find her friend or get off the planet herself. Finally, she finds out that the recusing her friend will require a major mission dependent upon her finding new friends and building a team on a strange planet.Zita the Spacegirl is a delight. As you can tell, I highly recommend it. The dialogue is funny, the art is stunning, and the plot is compelling. Your kids will love it. Both my children — 8 and 11 — enjoyed it and the second volume. The third volume comes out in less than two months. Even though it’s a continuing story and you’ll want to find out what happens next, unlike some comics and novels in a series, it has enough closure to give a sense of satisfaction as you come to the final page. Do not pass this book up.

Zita the Spacegirl is about a girl who gets sucked through a portal to another planet.Hatke gives us a classic hero’s journey in an imaginative, sci-fi setting. Our protagonist, Zita is a compassionate and feisty girl, who meets a bunch of lovable, flawed new companions and scary aliens on her quest to find her friend who was kidnapped by a deep sea helmet with mechanical tentacles. My favorite things about Zita:~It’s about a female hero. She’s so realistically a young girl I was not at all surprised to read the Hatke has three daughters. She’s frightened, idealistic, so sweet, and brave. It’s always nice to have female protagonists, but often girls have girl problems (like boys, social problems, family). Instead we get a classic damsel in distress, with the roles reversed, the boy needs rescuing, and the girl gets to be the Hero.~She rides a giant, sentient mouse.~None of the characters were perfect. Our group of heroes were broken and flawed, and it made them relateable and compelling. (A broken robot, a gun happy prototype, a con man, and a little girl walk into a bar...)~The story is self contained. While there is a sequel to Zita, the first novel is a whole story beginning to end. I remember being particularly frustrated as a child (while stealing my brother’s comics) about cliffhangers and to be continued’s. There’s nothing worse than an unfinished story. (I’m looking at you Peter Jackson.)~Hatke has a great colorsense. The palette is soft and consistent. I love a man who knows his colors.~DID I MENTION THE MOUSE THAT SHE RIDES?~Threat of apocalypse = automatic +5 bonus points! All around excellent book (especially if you’re looking for something to get your kid’s interested in graphic novels or science fiction!), 183 pages of pure, epic fun! With laser guns! Pew pew!

Love Zita, Love Ben Hatke! The illustrations are wonderful and creative, the story telling even more so! Great family fun, my 3 year old and my 13 year old love this series. So basically great storytelling and family fun for all ages! Not to mention my husband and I both do not mind reading this over and over and over to my 3 yo...

We first checked this book out at our wonderful public library, fell in love with the illustrations and the fast-paced action and the wonderful characters and knew we had to get this book. Finding out there were sequels was like icing on the cake. Completely recommend this story to boys and girls of all ages who love a rollicking good time, happy endings, and great characters! Compassion and friendship, bravery, honesty, and seeing things through to the end even when not comfortable to oneself are all themes in this story. My son (8) LOVES this book and reads it on his own, but especially loves to snuggle with Mom while I read it to him!

Zita is such a simple and amazing graphic novel with lots of action and awesome humor. I couldn't put it down (adult) and I would recommend it to any reader of any age.Zita is dragged into a new world and a creative adventure. She makes friends with all sorts of creatures that help her on her quest to save her friend and return home. The character design and the scenes are well constructed and have a great style.

Based on what I saw on 60 Minutes (CBS) Sunday (10/23/11) about this book (published by CBS/S&S) and on the "Look Inside" on Amazon, I think the book is well enough written and contains valuable lessons and information that I'd like to have on my bookshelf...forever!***I'LL BUY IT***!I'm greatly stunned and saddened by Steve's death. I don't know how this could have happened to one of God's greatest gifts to the world. I have loved Apple and Steve Jobs for many years and nothing will be the same without him. This is a great loss for the world. ;...(

With the exception of one laptop and 2 non-smart cell phones, in my personal and professional life since 2004 I've had nothing but Apple products - computers (both desktop and laptop), iPads, iPods, and my crown jewel: my iPhone. None has ever disappointed me. I say this not to put forth a review of the Apple products but to explain that I am part of Steve Jobs's choir: I value, respect and rely on the products that he created. I'm sold, so to speak. And so it seemed only logical that I would eventually read this book to gain insight both in the genesis and evolution of Apple and in the person of Steve Jobs. The book did not disappoint in either. What I found out about the early years and the development of the personal computer was fascinating. I do remember a lot of the news articles from those years - I was living in San Francisco at the time and a good friend of mine worked for Apple - but I would not consider myself previously knowledgeable about Apple in any comprehensive way. I learned so much of the nuts and bolts of Apple Computer, Inc., from this book. The chapters about the creation of the iPod, iPhone and iPad were very interesting to someone who has used these products for years and years and feels she has some proficiency using what they offer me.But the insight I gained from the book on Steve Jobs the man left me very sad. While I consider him to have been a true genius with an almost other-worldly imagination, I can't imagine that I would have liked him very much or respected him outside of his professional arena. As the founder and developer of Apple Computer, he was spectacular. He had an intense imagination, vision, and belief in things that had yet to be discovered. He was fortunate enough to find those people who had the same precise work ethic that he did. To find those people and to hone the abilities of the ones who stayed, he had no reservations about crushing their substandard efforts or their feelings. The ones who lasted were the ones who believed in his vision and their Jobs-given opportunity to indulge and demonstrate their own creativity. The ones who lasted were the best and brightest the tech and artistic world had to offer. The ones who lasted were the ones who took his ideas and made them into our reality. I am profoundly grateful to them and to him for the advances they made in technology and artistry. And I guess the one cannot exist without the other. Without his exact personality would the tech world have been turned on its ear and eventually controlled by Apple? I don't know. Actually I doubt it.In terms of his family, it seemed as if his attention to them was given only when it was not required or demanded elsewhere. His children were discussed very little; the same is true about Laurene Powell, his wife. But it is clear that in his wife he found the one person who was his equal in intelligence and commitment. Their marriage is portrayed as strong but him as absent. The sections on his cancer and eventual death were moving but not enough to make me feel for him as a person. I am sorry he died but my sorrow has to do with the loss of him professionally and what he might have accomplished and achieved had he lived but not with the loss of him as a man. And yet I can recognize his genius and I'm glad I read the book.

Although I have awarded this book four stars, I confess that I was unable to finish it. Jobs is certainly not an attractive subject for a biography. Human relations were not his strong point. He was rude, mercurial, arrogant, brash and condescending among other things. On the other hand he was brilliant, had enormous vision, was able to choose the right people to accomplish his goals and he rocked the technical world to its foundations. For me his unattractiveness outweighed the time needed to complete Isaacson's lengthy biography which is probably the best that will ever be written about Jobs. His writing style is very dense; each page is filled with information, observations and a myriad of other details. I found it trying and wearied of Job's bad behavior, arguments unsuccessful romances and what have you., Let others tread where I could not.

My mini-synopsis: This book was a looooong journey. By far the longest books I’ve read (not very helpful in keeping my average read time down) but it was also one of my favorite. It went through the life of Steve Jobs in an insane amount of detail. From every product launch, to every girlfriend, it covered the whole gambit. I had already heard many things about Jobs such as the fact that he had a child and refused to accept that it was his until years later as well as the fact that he was terrible to his employees. This book drove home those points as well as adding some other crazy facts such as him believing that the youth of today was doomed because they didn’t do LSD. Steve Jobs is iconic and probably the best product centric CEO in history. His journey through life showed that there was definitely a major cost to this but ultimately, the world is better for it.What I learned: Out of all the books I have so far, this one has the biggest impact on my current work. That impact being an obsession on getting the product right. There are many lessons and experts that convince you to be lean and test the smallest hypothesis which is a great strategy but sometimes, you need to follow your gut. When I started reading this book, I had just finished designing out a feature that would encourage much more interaction with our product but was meant to be in a later version. I kept having a feeling that it needed to be put in as soon as possible and reading about Jobs’ gut feelings and obsession for getting it right, pushed me to follow my own feeling and I believe it was a huge decision. Another thing I learned from this book is exactly how I don’t want to treat people. Maybe I am too much of an optimist but I believe that being nice is one of the greatest attributes you can have. I don’t mean you should be a doormat but genuinely wanting to find the best outcome for all parties involved is just right. The way that Jobs treated everyone around him is unacceptable and it is the one thing that will constantly cause an asterisk to be by his name. I learned a lot from this book and I believe it will continue to have a huge effect on my life moving forward.

The Female Persuasion: A Novel, by Meg Wolitzer

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2018: There’s nothing like a crush – the all-consuming gush of obsession and excitement that shocks the system into euphoria. We often read about romantic infatuation, but in The Female Persuasion, Meg Wolitzer sets her sights on another kind – female friendship and mentorship, and the craving to be heard and admired by the one you admire. It’s a rich and satisfying novel – it will be called timely –about Greer Kadetsky, a young woman coming of age and finding inspiration in feminist icon, Faith Frank, who evolves throughout the novel from abstract celebrity, to boss, confidant and challenger who pushes Greer to confront reality. “Maybe that's what we want from women, Greer thought as her thumb pulsed and percolated with blood. Maybe that's what we imagine it would be like to have a woman lead us. When women got into positions of power, they calibrated and re-calibrated tenderness and strength, modulating and correcting. Power and love didn't often live side by side. If one came in, the other might go.” This novel shimmers with hope and yearning and examines just how potent (and complicated) female support can be in a world that does not always champion women. —Al Woodworth

From School Library Journal

Bright and ambitious, Greer Kadetsky, the child of former hippies, attends her fallback school while her high school sweetheart, Cory, an academic powerhouse, enrolls at Yale. During her first weekend in college, she's groped at a frat party by a serial abuser, and she becomes inspired to stand up for herself by a speech given by Faith Frank, a charismatic icon whom Greer later engages in conversation. Greer's burgeoning friendship with a feminist freshman, Zee, also motivates her. After college, Cory sets off to capitalize on his Ivy League degree in international finance, while Greer reaches out to Faith, and both women embark on a new venture, a foundation to empower and support women around the world. It's a testament to Wolitzer's skill that few characters remain unexplored. Greer, Faith, and Cory are all unflinchingly defined. The three true-to-life protagonists face struggles that will interest young adult readers because of the book's weighty and relevant themes. Here, they will also find a powerful character-driven coming-of-age story told in a stark, wry voice. VERDICT Buy for discerning teens and collections serving academic high flyers.—Suzanne Gordon, Lanier High School, Sugar Hill, GA

The good news is that this novel is extremely well written; the author’s voice is engaging and fresh, and she uses humor to great effect. The bad news is that, for me at least, the characters never felt fully developed or social issues fully engaged with, so the whole novel wound up being very bland and not very interesting. In part, that may be because so many characters were given what felt like relatively long backstories for no reason I could discern (assuming that the blurbs are correct and that this is, at its heart, Greer’s story). Greer’s relationship with Faith felt underdeveloped and far less well explored than it could have been, and even Greer’s own “growth” from young, budding feminist to major player seemed nonexistent. A pity, because the interesting premise and really great writing should have resulted in a much better product.

I am a huge fan of this author's many wonderful novels, and exquisite writing because of the universality of her themes, her characters' authenticity, many who jump from the page and into our hearts, including the flawed because, in reality we are all flawed. In this, her latest, and I say, greatest...heart, humor, and her signature brilliance blend seamlessly as her characters explore the setbacks and heartache associated with the challenges women must take to become relevant, and even harder to stay relevant, while seeking the wisdom and support from those who dared before them. A truly great read.

Wow. I so looked forward to this book and was SO disappointed! Wolitzer desperately needed an editor to cut through the strangling, exhausting exposition and give this narrative some pace! She has four stories spinning out at once that do, obviously, intersect, but each one feels, oddly, both truncated and excessive. The same stories are told again and again, but not in some intriguing Rashomonesque way -- simply repeated by other characters. The strangest lacuna in the book is the fact that there is no real relationship between Greer and her "mentor" Faith Frank; I can count on one hand the times they are actually in the same room! This is a novel more about anxiety of influence than female mentorship, and is curiously dated for a novel touted to be relevant in the current climate.

Not a literary masterpiece, but a darn good read. This novel is a well-plotted intergenerational story of women that integrates two waves of feminism--the 60s and 70s wave and the contemporary wave. Although the language never soars and the ideas are rarely illuminated in fresh ways, I couldn't put the book down. THE FEMALE PERSUASION touches on many timely issues--sexual identity and feminism, color and economics in feminism, workplace harassment, ambition versus values, the hollowness of some philanthropic organizations--and concludes with a chapter about the Women's March of 2017 and the horrors of Trump without ever mentioning by name the monster in the White House. Ironically, the biggest and most admirable feminist in the novel is a man--Cory--who does what needs to be done for his mother with love and respect and doesn't foist responsibility for her on female relatives. This is a fast, reasonably satisfying read to be shared by women in their 60s and 70s and their adult daughters.

I found this novel mostly disappointing. The overarching theme -- feminism comes in all colors and shapes, and yeah, women characters have the same flaws as men -- was in the end kind of a huge cliché. Not enough to hang a piece of fiction on. Wolitzer uses all the novelists tools in advancing her narrative, but in the end, there's not much to this story. Women strive, women achieve (amid sexual violations on campus that go unpunished), and they betray each other. Sometimes in petty ways (like men, I guess). The sympathy for the main characters wanes as you read on (likely intentionally), but there were too many not-quite-plausible plot shifts to really enjoy the book. Wolitzer can certainly turn a phrase, and her prose often sings, but it's also marred with too many forced similes at times. She gets over-busy with the back stories at times you just want to say, move this book along.

Oh My Goodness! Thank you for writing this! There is much great fiction written by women but for me, some stand as landmarks.....Small Changes, The Women’s Room, Meridian, the poetry of Nikki Giovanni and Gwendolyn Brooks...Meg Wurlitzer just hit that mark. What an incredible writer. My patchouli soaked sensibilities are sated.

Most Popular Caribbean Recipes – Quick & Easy: Essential West Indian Food Recipes From The Caribbean Islands by Grace Barrington-ShawNever had Caribbean food so thought I'd like to understand it. Author does a good job of getting you in the mood and why he's a good teacher of the food he's grown up on.Each recipe gives you a summary of the dish, then the list of ingredients. Love that there are NO exact measurements for the spices. There are no pictures and no nutritional information but you should be able to substitute for your dietary needs. There are also suggestions with what else you can serve with the dish.Love different methods of making dumplings as we no longer fry foods.Festival bun sounds good and using things we love. Enjoy learning about the tools and utensils used. Charts for conversions and measures are included.Other works by the author are highlighted at the end.

Terrible book. It's only about 40 pages. Many , many of the recipes do not show the measurements for the ingredients. What an incredible rip off. Save your money

This recipe book is especially nice because of the way it is written. All the recipes are given in a lot of detail which makes it easy to follow even when no pictures are present. Also, the actual recipes themselves were really well chosen and taste really good! I liked it!

I guess I was expecting a little more. I won’t be using this book- I put it straight to the goodwill box in the garage. 😳 there were no recipes for sweets, and the main dish recipes just didn’t seem like anything I would ever make.

Love the pictures of each dish. Love the easy to find mouth watering dishes. Foods of the Caribbean are easy to make and tasty. Love it!

being a caribbean girl, this came in handy, I loved this

Good

Like the fact the book was a quick and easy guide to cook delicious Caribbean cuisine . Hopefully I will be able brush on my cooking skills.

Among the very best of the Arden 3’s in terms of both clarity of writing (and of proofreading*), scholarship, thoroughness (though thankfully it refrains from the lit-theory gobbledygook that mars several of the Arden 3’s), and unbiased weighing of different scholarly views about the play. The fascinating Introduction and Appendixes are clear, concise, and thoughtful, and the textual commentary detailed and uncommonly helpful (especially in unraveling the conversational language of the comic scenes). This indispensable commentary engages the reader in the editor’s own love of the play both on the page and in performance.*I notice just one typo (on p. 62 “mind end” s.b. “mine end”) and one copy editor’s oversight (2.2.30-1n, where “first mention” is contradicted by 1.2.109n).

Reading a side by side translation of a Shakespeare play is very useful when the original language is too difficult to grasp. The translation in this book was good, but the shaded color that was superimposed on the text of the modern translation was distracting. There is no need for it since the original is always on the left side of the page and the translation is on the right side. I also would have preferred that the name of each speaker in the play would be on the top of the translated text not just on the original text. This would allow the reader to continue reading without having to refer back to the original to find out who is saying what!

I read King Henry IV, Part 1 for a local book club. It is the first time since high school that I have read any of Shakespeare's works. I am glad this was my reintroduction. I enjoyed the play and look forward to reading other works by the Bard.Shakespeare presents two difficulties for me... The first is the language. Most of it is easily enough understood... Or at least the context is. There is some, however, that is so archaic it gives me pause. The second is following the story in play format. I found it helpful to have a dictionary close by for reference and to read the play aloud as opposed to trying to read it quietly. I think it would be even better if it could be performed by a group as opposed to me alone. The play reminds me of the mastery of Shakespeare. The lines are poetic and the imagery is fantastic. There was more than one quote that really stuck with me and I'll ponder these lines long after. I also enjoyed learning something of a history that wasn't taught when I was in school.I am looking forward to Part 2 and would encourage anyone to give King Henry IV a chance.

Not much to say honestly, because I haven't got a thing on Shakespeare except to say I love his work, his characters, his wit, his charm, the comedy, the tragedy, and...well you probably get my point.Henry IV Part I is personally my favorite of his plays and I take the typical stance of being a Falstaff sympathizer (expedited by Roger Allam's portrayal at Shakespeare's Globe and Orson Welles' in Chimes at Midnight), but enjoy all the characters and their interactions.Folger Shakespeare Library has been an excellent resource for me, as I came to these plays with absolutely no knowledge of Shakespeare whatsoever. There are word translations on one side of the page and text summaries for each act, and the occasional illustration. Can't ask for more for $6, 5 stars.

Having just completed Henry IV Part I, I must say that I came away delighted and impressed with Shakespeare's genius once again. Shakespeare's ability to intertwine the arduous dichotomy of the impcomparable comedy of Falstaff and the meaningful history of Henry IV, Prince Hal, & Hotspur is impressive to say the least. It comes as no surprise that this was one of Shakespeare's most popularly staged plays during his day and enjoyed an unusually long stage run.Falstaff is undoubtedly the most infamously famous literary comic character in the history of English literature. The scenes of him being robbed by Prince Hal, feigning his death, stabbing the already deceased Hotspur in the leg while claiming victory, and his employment of beggars as his foot soldiers galvanize the comic aspect of the play and make for a hilarious & farcical sublot. Interestingly, in the bar in Eastcheap, Prince Hal alludes to his future persecution of Falstaff when he is crowned king.I strongly recommend Henry IV Part I to all Shakespeare aficionados seeing as I deem it in the top five of all Shakespeare's works along with Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, & Henry V. Now on to Part II. Adieu."The better part of valor is discretion." - Falstaff

Sir John Falstaff was the only interesting character:What is honour? a word. What is that word, honour? air. A trim reckoning!—Who hath it? he that died o' Wednesday. Doth he feel it? no. Doth be hear it? no. Is it insensible, then? yea, to the dead. But will it not live with the living? no. Why? detraction will not suffer it. Therefore I'll none of it: honour is a mere scutcheon:—and so ends my catechism.

I love the Folger editions of these books. I don't want my students using "no fear Shakespeare" because I want them to learn to read these themselves. The Folger editions are like "no fear Shakespeare" for smart people only because it doesn't spell everything out. You still have to understand the text. They have the definitions on one side of the page and the text on the other. It's certainly handy.

Wordcraft: New English to Old English Dictionary and ThesaurusIf you only know Shakespeare by the fact that he existed and was a play writer and you decide that you want to read one of his history plays and the history play that you pick happens to be King Henry IV part one then just reading the text alone will be extremely confusing. Barbara Hodgdon has done an amazing job editing this play and her notes are extremely helpful besides her explication of this play there are historical graphics and historical maps that will help you when reading or seeing the works of Shakespeare. This book is more than a college textbook, it is enjoyable historical reading. Craig Barr.

“If John Berger’s Ways of Seeing is a classic of art criticism, looking at the ‘what’ of art, then David Salle’s How to See is the artist’s reply, a brilliant series of reflections on how artists think when they make their work. The ‘how’ of art has perhaps never been better explored.” - Salman Rushdie“David Salle’s brilliant canvases changed everything, and now his luminescent eye and voice have married in a book that is destined to alter not only how we look at art, but the language we use to describe it. His essays are a gift that, in addition to feeding one’s process of intellection, nourishes one’s art loving soul. Transcendent.” - Hilton Als“David Salle is widely known as one of our most daring and intelligent painters, but he is also an eloquent critic. How to See is a marvel of incisive and intimate observation. For all his audacity as a painter, Salle seems touchingly proud to be a part of the family of art and to derive his pictorial forms from what he calls the ‘the shared DNA of art,’ raising the possibility that all masterworks are in fact a group project.” - Deborah Solomon“David Salle’s thoughtful, intelligent, beautifully written essays inspire us to think about, and look at, art in wholly new ways. He makes difficult subjects (and artists) seem effortless, transparent, and he wears the depth and breadth of his knowledge of art and art history so lightly that we hardly notice how much we are learning. How to See is a pure pleasure to read.” - Francine Prose“David Salle writes about art with a joyous lucidity that is both bracing―nothing, absolutely nothing, escapes his notice―and utterly disarming. He guides his readers through the complex world of contemporary art with a rare generosity of spirit, a dazzling skill at description, and a radiant honesty that are as challenging as they are irresistible.” - Ingrid Rowland“David Salle asks of other art not, where does this belong? but, what does this make me feel and think about? Salle subtly and persuasively reminds us that all art, even the most seemingly recalcitrant, is there to be looked at, and that what artists do is, exactly, teach us how to see.” - Adam Gopnik“David Salle has a sharp, thrilling eye and an uncanny ability to reorder and make new the act of seeing. These perceptive, far-ranging essays are drawn from deep knowledge and experience―reading this book feels like having a conversation about art with the smartest person in the room.” - Emma Cline“Wonderful.” - Joan Juliet Buck“Lovely to read… [How to See] is serious but never solemn, alert to pleasure, a boulevardier’s crisp stroll through the visual world.” - Dwight Garner, New York Times“An upbeat, non-combative approach to art criticism… [F]resh, engaging.” - Roger White, New York Times Book Review

Do you want to feel part of the NewYork arty IN group? Reading this book is the next best thing. The writing is entertaining and the stories give you an insight into how the art world has been operations. Whether you like "modern art" or not, you will be wiser after you read this....

Maybe it takes an artist to write about artists, but this collection of essays and descriptions of artists' work, life and personalities is wonderful. Almost every essay sent me off to the rabbit hole looking for more examples of the art discussed, and so I found the book very expansive. Have a laptop at hand as you read and explore and enjoy at will.

It's hard to find artists who can write well past the essay level, and also depart from today's artistic hermetic language. Add to that, his significant place in art, his background, and the context of his "high period" and you have a something verging on classic here. A great read, and thankful the artist felt impelled to put his well-considered, chiseled insights on paper.

The title is better than the book. Some insights into the making of art, but mostly anecdotes of personal experiences with and of the artists.

Read for book group. Some essays were too short to really deal with the subject.

Its great to read a real painters view.

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised but my first reading of this book produced slight disappointment: I think David Salle is a better painter than writer about art. Probably as it should be, but it's a word of caution to prospective readers. Other reviewers here have pointed to his language stye as the problem. I'm not sure. His tone can be pedantic but is that the problem? Again, I'm not sure. I myself am not an artist but in reading about art I look for something like inspiration. In this book I found a little of that but less than expected. Occasionally he sounds enthusiastic but that can come across as calibrated or processed. I think it's partly a tone issue, but the book is serious and thoughtful enough that I'll keep it and possibly reread at some point. (I still think he's a very good painter.) I might get more out of a second reading. One more criticism: Each chapter has 1 reproduction but all are black-and-white. Would it have cost that much more to publish them in color?

Interesting read in parts but terribly self-indulgent author who has to prove how much and who he knows. For serious modern art lovers ONLY
