I bought this book after reading Melanie Mitchell's book Complexity: A Guided Tour. I wanted to read more about her Copycat project, and Fluid Concepts has a few chapters on that.This book is really a collection of articles about different projects attempting to model the way people think. It's not about artificial intelligence the way most people think of it nowadays (pattern matching), but more about how people relate ideas to each other. You might think it would be outdated, but I get the sense that most AI researchers have not pursued this way of thinking, instead focusing on neural networks (machine learning).The articles are collected with (some) hindsight and editing to prevent too much repetition. That said, it's still a bit repetitive in many places. However, that's forgivable because the ideas are so revolutionary that some repetition is desirable.Hofstadter's ideas seem right on to me. If you want to learn about those ideas, this book is more accessible than Goedel, Escher, Bach, though if you get interested in Hofstadter you should definitely read GEB.

This book is, as others have commented, different from DH's other more entertaining books.It is a serious attempt to discuss the real issues and difficulties with AI research. There is a lot of quite dry material and in places it is repetitive.It provides terrific insight into the problem of imitating human thinking at a deep level, and I found it very rewarding. It was also very interesting to follow the threads of how he went about doing research, and what he thought of other AI research.His views of various flavours of AI research were very instructive and inightful I thought.In summary a good book, but this is not (high quality) brain candy like Godel Escher Bach etc.

When I first read this book years ago, I found it very intuitive and exciting to look at the problems in this new way. It definitely makes a clear distinction between "expert systems" and proper intelligence. I recently went back and started reading it again. I'm still amazed by the false sense of simplicity of the problems Hofstaedter tries to solve and how complex they actually are. I wonder if they are not complete in some sense anyhow.It's great fun reading the book and following the train of thoughts is enjoyable and simple enough ... at least for somebody with a basic understanding in maths and maybe some AI knowledge. So if you started to read GÃ¶del, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid but never finished it, this is a much easier and more pragmatic read than Hofstaedter's more generic book.

No problems, good experience.

Explores the broad strokes of a decade's worth of research by one of the most eloquent and interesting cognitive scientists working. I personally would have been happier to delve deeper into the specifics of the projects--appending some of the papers in question would be a nice touch in a re-issue.

Loved it! Fascinating read on cognitive science. A little out of date, but well worth the read.

I'm brand new to After Effects. This book held my hand and walked me through it and gave me understanding. I'm still in the early chapters, but I find I can't wait to get to the next one. Lynda is so clear and complete in her explanations that it would be difficult not to understand and learn.

a bit more underlined than I was expecting, but its used,so I guess that's what used means....many thanks,I am going to make good use of it!

A most useful book

I'd recommend it to anyone who works with after effects

traditionally the Meyers books are considered the standard, but they're kind of dense, a lot to absorb, and they move through material a bit fast. If you're committed and hungry, then maybe they're what you want, but if you want a gentler beginning to build your confidence, I think you're better off starting with this book, and then taking on the Meyers books once you have a solid overall grounding. The difference in layout alone is plenty reason: this book has a lot more white space and breathing room, while the Meyers books are just crammed margin to margin, and feel smaller, even though they are the same size. Properly delivered, AE gives itself up wonderfully, but there's so much to it, you run the risk of overwhelm if it piles on too fast.

Before turning the first page of this book, the only thing I knew about After Effects was that it was an Adobe product. I breezed through the trainings with no problems, and by the end had a firm grasp of the program. The exercises are well written and straight forward. I found the instances of repetitiveness helpful because of the sheer volume of information covered. I flagged all the major charts and definitions for review, as I am sure this book will be a handy reference long after the last page. Familiarity with Adobe products such as Illustrator and Photoshop will help, but are not essential. I only wish Lynda had written a second volume to cover more advanced techniques as well, but I plan on using her H.O.T. line of books next time I plunge into unfamiliar software.

I am a Production Manager for a major TV Station in the Southwest. This is by far the most comprehensive and informative step by step book on "Adobe After Effects" that I have ever read on the subject. Perfect if you are a beginner and working on MAC platform. If you are already familiar with previous versions of After Effects maybe you should look for a more technically advanced book. But if you are new to the subject you won't find a better book than this one. Period!

While the author states that she is writting a cross platform book,she ofter fails to explain the correct way of doing things on the Windows platform. The Windows user is left to figure it out on their own. The Windows user may find another title more suitable.

I have to say I love this book. I'm a 59 year old, working physicist and never once understood how weather works - this answered all my basic questions. I bought it used originally, so I wasn't able to use the online videos and animations - so I'm buying it again new in order to do that. I've read several other of the "big name" books on such things, having to do with numerical climate modelling, weather and climate, etc., but this one takes an integrated approach, avoiding many complex equations, so you can see the entire forest and not get lost in all the equations of this complex subject. It does tell you when it's skipping over something - so it's a great intro as well as add-on to graduate-level texts.

An OK book attempting to balance between deeper science and accessibility to under graduates

The material in the book scanning through reminded me of high school biology textbooks except in an open form to place inside of a binder. The vocabulary words are bolded, not highlighted. Overall the content appears to be easy to understand which will be great as I transition to college. I look foreword to indulging in this book.

About the Author

Kevin Dunn is the Elliott Professor of Chemistry at Hampden-Sydney College, where he teaches the course which inspired this book. He holds a BS degree from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. He appears on The Learning Channel's "Mysteries of Magic" and is co-author of a dozen journal articles in theoretical chemistry. He lives in central Virginia with his wife and several cats.

Behind the tall walls and deep dungeons of academia is, well, our teachers that will unfortunately, possibly teach our children. This paragon of academia wants to teach through this book using demons -renamed "meme-ons," and lucifer as your friendly guide to the fire aspect of chemistry. Much of it, he just wants to run his mouth about this type of nonsense that barely relates to the topic. If you are a serious Rennaisance Fair-ey(?) you'll eat this book alive! Amateur blacksmiths banging a hammer, art school potters, hood wearing alchemist's -buy it! To his credit, the fire-starter bow drill did look like a real working mechanism -and very well thought out. If he would have kept his politics and his occult in his pants, I would have taken the book seriously and read past the fourth chapter even with the ye Olde English stuff.

I'm using this book in a college chemistry class for nonscience majors. Dunn's writing is a bit eccentric, no doubt, but the projects are great and my students are engaged as never before, so--I win!Science books that are intended to be marketed both as trade books and as textbooks generally fail at both. Often the two goals are just incompatible. Dunn has achieved something special here: he has done a nice job of resolving the conflicts between these two goals. The text is rigorous enough to be used in a general-college class, yet accessible to any interested person looking for a nifty science project (or a handbook for surviving the collapse of civilization!)...and as a bonus, it's a great read. In addition he maintains an extremely helpful website for the book; I have learned almost as much about the projects from reading the comments of his students as from reading the book, and having a central place for errata to be posted online is very convenient for my students.I'd love to see a character in the next Mad-Max-style post-apocalypse movie pull out a copy of Caveman Chemistry and start a fire with two sticks, or make soap starting with ashes. But even if civilization survives, I will take consolation in this: with the projects in this book, we can participate in a tradition of human technology going back 500,000 years.

Idiosyncratic and irreverent, Caveman Chemistry is like no other chemistry textbook that I know of. It is authored not only by Kevin Dunn but also four figments of his imagination who have leapt from mind to mind down through history and do their best to make the leap out of the book and into yours. You learn the history of chemical technology through a series of hands-on projects that demand that you get your hands dirty making things from scratch: fire, paper, glass, soap, batteries, photographs, polyester, and others. The book does not shy away from potentially dangerous projects like making gunpowder, alcohol, and chlorine gas, trusting that readers are capable of all due caution.The book gave me a greater appreciation for the sources for the products that I use on a daily basis. Rather than being conjured out of thin air, the stuff in my life has its origin in the natural world. Now to get my hands dirty...

As a current chemistry major with a long and sordid history of odd compounds, this book is a JOY to read even for me. It is this type of writing that truly brings "normal" non-scientific readers into the realm of the laboratory.It is fact and procedure written in a style that is instantly comfortable and reasonably non-technical. As one reviewer stated, THIS is what required reading should be.Everyone is worried about the "brain drain" in the US right now. If books like this were present in the arena of primary education for the last ten years, we wouldn't have anything to worry about. For people that can't immediately "dream this stuff in color" it is books like this that create a first breach in the dam that is our current bureaucratic education system.

Honestly this has been one of the most engaging factual books I've ever read. A book like this demonstrates clearly that what many think of as "college level scientific material" is easily digestible by normal humans if it's presented well. The strangeness of a five-voiced book gives way to some genuinely good explanations, and I think even elementary school kids could walk away with a completely PRACTICAL understanding all kinds of stuff that sounds complicated but is actually fairly straightforward: salts/acids/bases/alcohols, metathesis/condensation reactions, etc.

I met the author Kevin Dunn at a soap maker's guild conference. He gave such an interesting lecture regarding chemistry that was so hilarious that I had to buy this book for my 14 year old son who was about to take High School Chemistry. (He compared chemical compounds to "nerds and cheerleaders") He read this book over the summer and WOW!! He could not put this book down. He absorbed this book like a sponge and it gave him a great advantage over the other kids in the class. Needless to say, he is "acing" chemistry class. Kevin Dunn is the coolest "nerd" I have ever met! We just purchased his book "Scientific Soapmaking".....

History, arts and science rolled in one. Truly a labor of love. If I only had teachers like Kevin Dunn when I was growing up ...

As beginners, the information in this book is invaluable.I have ordered several books about how to get started--this is hands-down the BEST! The author has been in the business for a while and everything in this book is interesting to read, precise in its explanations, and templates are provided to download from their website. If there were six-stars I would give them.

The story, The Idealist, is illustrated by Brian C. Hailes. Hubbardâ€™s fast-paced prose is always a delight to read.The next sequence of stories are all vivid and exciting. Thanatos Drive by Andrew Dykstal and illustrated by Qianjiao Ma; A Harvest of Astronauts by Kyle Kirrin and illustrated by Sam Kemp; and Super-Duper Moongirl and the Amazing Moon Dawdler by Wulf Moon and illustrated by Alice Wang. The final stories are An Itch by Christopher Baker illustrated by Jennifer Ober; Dirt Road Magic by Carrie Callahan and illustrated by Yingying Jiang; A Certain Slant of Light by Preston Dennett and illustrated by Christine Rhee. I really enjoy the diversity of these stories, and each corresponding piece of artwork was a perfect match. Overall, this is the primary Science-Fiction and Fantasy anthology I purchase.

It seems to get better and better every year. These are all new writers but don't think that means the stories are less than pro-level. I'd argue they're better. I haven't yet read them all yet but I will soon. My eye was drawn first to "Super-Duper Moon Girl and the Amazing Mood Dawdler." With a crazy title like that, who wouldn't notice it? It's a fabulous, funny read about a lovely disabled girl living on the moon with her very cool rapper-med-dog. It's silly and enchanting. If this is what the rest of the anthology has in store, I'm sure it will be another best-seller.
