Hate saying I loved this book when I hated that so many young women where abused by so many messed up creeps in the world. I dont quite understand how the interviews were conducted or when. Was it during her captivatey or after the prince was sent for a ride off the cliff. Any way so sad that so many innocent women every day are objected to abuse by so many bastards just because they have money or ball.

I like it for an afternoon of reading. It made me angry for all the lost futures of these women.

Very outstanding..a must read for all three books....opened my eyes to he'll on earth..want to help stop this....God be with these victims

This is an excellent book describing the dreary, unrewarding life of Harem Slaves. Their personal stories of how the got there is both riveting and also horrifying. At times it left me shaking my head in bewilderment when some of these women described their feelings towards their en-slaver. A fascinating read even on it's own.

It was okay. I liked the first two books more. I think because they were just about one character.

Interesting. Good book to read.

Yes, we survivors can tell in a second of eye contact.Alice's courage may be appreciated by many, but is viscerally appreciated by other victims.Her prose and the rhythm of her writing makes this memoir all the more powerful--as if the story weren't horrific and devastating enough, of the rape and of being forced to live the rest of your life with the flinching and rage of someone who has been forever altered by having been raped.Thank you, Alice Sebold.

Frankly, you'd have to be sick to "love" this book. It opens with a horrifyingly detailed description of the author's rape when she was a virginal college freshman. Then it describes her experiences with a police/court system that put rape at the bottom of it's priority list. It's brutal and depressing. It's also a book that you'll be glad you read and that you'll never forget.I bought this book over two years ago because it was on sale and the description sounded fascinating, if forbidding. It took me two years to work up to reading it and another six months to work up to reviewing it. It's a hard book to read and an even harder book to talk about.I DIDN'T buy it because it was written by a best-selling author. I was vaguely aware that there was a much-talked-about movie "The Lovely Bones" and that it was based on a novel. But I never read new fiction and I failed to connect that book and it's author with this one. Now, of course, I see the connection. Ms. Sebold first fictionalized her rape, then (when she was able) she wrote about it as the shocking truth it was and is.Because rape is a crime that no victim walks away from without deep, lasting scars. Even a strong, confident woman must deal with the anger, fear, and shame of being forcibly, brutally raped. And Alice Sebold was as vulnerable as any young woman who ever lived.I DID love the beautifully told, deeply sad story of her childhood in a suburb in Pennsylvania. It was a neighborhood of families who had "made it" and their children should have been living "Leave It to Beaver" lives. But the Sebold parents bore no resemblance to the warm, loving Cleavers. Both husband and wife were running from the demons of their own childhoods - poverty, harsh parents, unreasonable expectations. Two people who are drowning in their own inner turmoil have little left to give their children.Mr. Sebold was a brilliant academician. Absent physically much of the time and absent emotionally ALL the time, he left the care of his two young daughters to his wife. The fact that she was an alcoholic did not (in his mind) disqualify her from raising their children. When she was drunk, he closed the door to their bedroom and told his daughters "Mommy has a headache." Then he went back to his books.Eventually, Mrs. Sebold stopped drinking, but she never dealt with the cause - her anger at being forced into a role that she didn't want and wasn't able to fulfill. If times had been different, she and her husband might been a contented childless professional couple. But that wasn't how things were done in the 1950's. Mrs. Sebold retreated from life as a full-time mother into the comfort of alcohol. Deprived of booze, she replaced it with crippling anxiety attacks. Her husband retreated into his professional life and their daughters got along as best they could.Having been raised by a woman who loved being mother to a large family and a father who felt at least SOME some responsibility for parenting his children, I cannot imagine the sadness of the author's childhood. As she says, they were NEVER a family, but "four solitary souls" living in the same house. Alice Sebold was raped emotionally many times before a stranger dragged her into a secluded tunnel.Her older sister Mary was a pleaser and an achiever. She was taking her final college exams when her younger sister was raped. Alice was more of a rebel than her sister, but neither of them escaped their mother's strict rules and her obsession with sexual purity. Was she hoping to keep her daughters virgins so that they didn't make the "mistake" of having children of their own? If so, it worked.Sebold's story of her family's reaction to her rape is almost unbelievable and yet it's probably more common than otherwise. Typically, her mother focused on creating the proper outfit for her daughter to wear to court. Clothes make the rape victim, right? Her father made painful and sometimes surprisingly effective attempts to comfort his daughter, but nothing in their history made it easy for him to give love or for her to accept it.Equally fascinating were the reactions of the young people around her. Expecting little support from her parents, she reached out to her peers with sometimes startling results. And she was forced to come to terms with the fact that her rape was NOT a passing phenomenon, but a last legacy. She had joined a club that no one wants to be a member of.The story has a happy ending. Alice Sebold went on to find a rewarding life as a teacher of creative writing. She says her students "saved" her. And she eventually became an acclaimed writer. No one could be more deserving of her "luck."I'm glad I read this book. It's one I'll never forget.

Reading this book after watching the movie adapted from it was enjoyable. I seek these out and am usually rewarded. As I read..reflecting on the changes that were made adds a level of comfort to the read. Highly recommend this book and the movie.

Very well written and the little details of human interaction and observation are what makes this story so unique and special. As a new mother, the beautiful parent-child perspectives caused me to stop and look at my parents anew. I also look at my little baby girl and can't imagine this happening to her but that's the world we live with, I suppose. Horrible and lovely all at once. Well done.

This book is in no way easy to read. It starts out with a graphic account of 18 year old Alice Sebold's rape. I say account because it is mostly just facts, but that doesn't make it any easier to read. However I do think it was necessary to know the details to be able to understand how a horrible ordeal that lasted an hour affects the victim forever in so many different ways. It's a story of courage but without a halo. Sebold doesn't come off as having all the answers. She just explains how she got through the rape, trial and its aftermath. And she didn't do it without difficulty.The book strikes me as clinical in many ways, in particular Sebold's account of the trial and the defense attorney's attempt to exonerate his client. The facts themselves are enough to indict the legal system that always tries to blame the female victim. However, in this case, the prosecutors had a nearly perfect victim. Sebold was a virgin before the rape, was brutally beaten in easily photographed ways, had not used drugs or alcohol and after a few initial stumbles, is able to catch on to the defense lawyer's attempts to cast a bad light on her or twist her words. I really appreciate that the book didn't become a raging diatribe at any point. It simply points out ,as Sebold says, that being a woman can suck, because they are always trying to smash you down. Even the aftermath of the rape and Sebold's trying to get on with her life after the rapist's conviction rings very true and is touching without trying to emotionally manipulate.If you want to know how such a brutal crime can affect you or simply read about someone who made it through, it's worth reading this book.

I would recommend this book as it was recommended to me . It made one think about what becomes of us when we die. It lets our imagination go to more possibilities of what our life could be like when we pass on, whether a terrible death or at the end of a long and happy life. As many believe the dead can return and influence these we leave behind. It makes life after death not as scary if we can see what how such a terrible death can change those wee care about.

All I kept saying to myself during my read of this book was "Holy Crap!!!" And I'm only through a quarter of the book!! I'm tempted to call my narc husband and tell him that someone wrote his biography, because this book reads like HIS PLAYBOOK!! My gut kept telling me all along something was wrong, but since my husband is real good at maintaining the facade of caring, and an expert at downplaying my feelings and doling out the intermittent presents, I had a hard time reconciling the 'caring' facade with the cold sadistic attitude. This author shows why I and you are targeted by narcissists (being successful, and/or empathetic), and how your best qualities are used against you by the twisted narc. I really was feeling stupid after wasting years on a narc spouse, but in truth, the reason I was used is because I'm a good person and therefore a predator narc's primary target for abuse. The author also gives a list of red flags to identify a narc, so you don't waste time on them ever again. Of course there are strategies to deal with any narc that is currently in your life. I would encourage anyone who is in a relationship, even a familial relationship, in which you feel something is wrong, but you can't quite pinpoint the cause....READ THIS BOOK!! You may just find the answer to your confusion and pain...I'm not done reading this book yet, but one thing I can already clearly understand....any narcissist or borderline personality disorder type person who reads this book is going to HATE it....because it EXPOSES them!!!

I have read 50+ books on narcissistic personality disorder, narcissistic abuse, domestic abuse, trauma, PTSD, etc. This book is one of the best. Ms. Arabi is an excellent, thorough and insightful researcher and journalist. She lays the groundwork for recovery by explaining the impact of narcissistic abuse, synthesizing those truths with provocative insights from leading scholars and then offering practical suggestions and methods of recovery.This book is extremely well-documented and well-researched. Arabi not only addresses NPD and narcissistic abuse but delves into PTSD/CPTSD, citing the works of renowned experts such as Judith Herman, M.D., author of the foundational book “Trauma and Recovery,” and Patrick Carnes, Ph.D. (“The Betrayal Bond”). She also ties in the work of Bessel van der Kolk M.D., who in his book “The Body Keeps the Score” reveals how trauma rewires the the brain, along with dozens of other sources, both classic and contemporary.Each chapter of Arabi’s book features an impressive endnotes section as well as links to articles, podcasts and social media resources. She manages to combine all these sources into a comprehensive and revealing look at narcissistic abuse and its effects on the survivor. She then offers practical tips and alternatives for recovering from the trauma of narcissistic abuse. I was personally inspired and motivated by her creative recommendations for recovery – I even surprised myself by experimenting with the guided meditation links and redoubling my commitment to doing Zumba four times a week. And I haven’t even finished reading the book!Bravo, Ms. Arabi, and thank you! I very much recommend this book.

This is not the first book I have read on NPD. I wish this would have been the very first book I read, instead. It would have saved me of much headache and heartache. I am not finished reading this book, but I had to come in here and provide a review already. Just from the very first pages, this book has been able to help me understand my own personal situation with the narcissist in my life. A book that finally says it clearly the way it is and with sounded advise, not just for professionals in the field, but for the regular folk who has unfortunately been the victim of narcissist abuse. Because we have to call it for what it is: Abuse. I wish the courts in this country would be given this book and more education on this matter, especially when there are children involved. Courts force you to share custody with the narcissist parent when children and the former spouse should actually be allowed to keep contact to a minimum or no contact at all. In this particular case, exposure to the narcissist is not really a good idea for developing spirits and minds. Anybody who knows anything about NPD will tell you that the best thing to do is to go no contact. Other books suggest to remother the narcissist or do this or that. It does not work with these individuals because in their minds, they are always right and the whole world is conspiring against them. That's the main reason why neither the courts, nor supposed trained professionals can provide a diagnostic of NPD for those individuals because they can put a great act together for the whole world to see. By the time you realize what you're dealing with, you're already caught in their web of lies and deceive. Shahida Arabi explains all of this very clearly, in a way that anybody can understand. She has included clear examples of situations that are the "norm" for those suffering from this abuse. Anybody can see the scars left by violent physical abuse, but when it comes to emotional abuse, it is very difficult to prove in court or even to those who may be close to the victim. Shahida explains all the tools that a narcissist will use to control those around him or her. She shares her own personal and professional experience, as well as those of victims who have entrusted her with their own experience. Some reviews say that she's a bit repetitive at times. I have noticed that while reading the book. But believe me, repetition can be good to make some points, especially after you have been a victim yourself. Some things need to be repeated more than once because you have been gaslighted so much that you have trouble discerning reality from fog and you keep doubting yourself after so much abuse of this kind.For what my own personal opinion might be worth, and from the view point of someone who has suffered the abuse of a narcissist, this book is a must-read. If you're lost and you don't know where to go, you feel isolated and your gut feeling is telling you that something has to change and you don't know who to trust or where to go for help, start with this book. It will help you understand your own situation, why the narcissist in your life treats you kindly one moment to completely ignore you or put you down the next; why that person accuses you of being controlling when you feel you have absolutely no control over your life and you feel that he or she is actually controlling you, instead; you will understand where did that loving, caring, compassionate person of the early stages of your relationship has gone and why you might be now dealing with someone who doesn't even resemble that soulmate of yours; and more. I love the fact that she's been there and she's done her hard work to understand this pathology not only from a victim's stance, but from a professional point of view.I also got the Kindle version since it is free when you buy the book and I had absolutely no problems downloading it. I had noticed a few slight changes from the paper to the electronic version (I'm guessing one is a newer edition, not sure why there're these slight differences, but it seems to just be an editing thing.) But there are minimal and it doesn't affect. I love that I can read the book on my tablet or from the paper copy with no problems.I think I said enough. I could go on talking about it, but I will let the book speak for itself. Read the sneak-preview in here. If you're a victim, I'm sure you'll identify yourself even in those few pages. That's what happened to me. Only a victim can understand what I mean.

I loved this story about Anna and Ethan. If you read Cora's Pride, Anna and Cora are more like sisters then best friends but Anna just doesn't fit in this wilderness life. She wants to leave and go on to Oregon as they wanted to do before they met Nathanial, one of Ethan's younger brothers.Now that Nathanial and Cora are married and all are living at the Homestead of Harley's at Harley's Corner., Anna can't wait to leave. Nathanial had promised to get her safely to Oregon but now can't so he convinces his older brother Ethan to do it. Well Ethan and Anna can't seem to stand one another. She is a beautiful and very helpful woman and he is more of a recluse rather not wanting these women around. Well things go from bad to worse and then Nathanial convinces his brother why he needs to take her to at least the old Army post so she can join another wagon train. Problem is no wagon train is going to take a non married woman along.I love how this story takes on so much at this point and even before while still at the homestead. Can you see these two going anywhere together and survive each other? I couldn't that is for sure.You first need to read Cora's Pride before you read Anna's Heart so you know the whole story so far. Both are fantastic stories and you won't regret either of these stories or any of Peggy's stories as they are all fantastic.Surprises galore, adventure galore, problems galore exist in all of her books and she weaves tales brilliantly.I highly recommend this story as all of Peggy L. Henderson's stories. She is truly a brilliant author.

I love this second book in the wilderness bride's series. I loved Anna from Cora's Pride and was so happy that she got her own book. I loved seeing the relationship between Ethan and Anna evolve. I related to Ethan so well. He was guarded and had his heart closed off to everyone, including his brothers. Ethan and Anna both had issues to overcome from their past. I loved watching them work through it and solve the problems as their love for each other grew. I love the sense of humor that Ethan started to let Anna see. So many fun moments in the book. I really enjoyed seeing characters from the Teton and Yellowstone series show up here! I highly recommend this book and all of Peggy's books!

It turns out that the person to take her will be none other than Ethan.What happens on the trail? Anything exciting? Tragic? Surprises? Oh you must do yourself a huge favor and read it for yourself to find out everything that happens between Anna and Ethan and the people on the wagon train.I can't tell you how much this whole series has opened my eyes and my heart. I love these stories! You must get it!

The second book in the series, following Cora's Pride. Anna, if you remember, is Cora's best friend, not one of the sisters. Of course you get to see all the characters from the previous book, plus some from the other series as well! This is a simple, clean story; great for when you just want a nice romance to read and love the western setting of the 1800s. Of course there are a few twists and turns along the way, as life was never dull back then.These books are not as long as some of Peggy Henderson's others, but this is still a full length novel like the previous one.

Another wonderful tale of the vast wilderness surrounding the area of the Tetons by Ms Peggy L Henderson. With lovable, laughable and irascible characters, an exciting story line laced with adventure and romance, this was an easy to read beautiful escape for the time it took to travel through the pages of this story. Another tale you don't want to miss from Mrs Henderson. I can't wait to read the next story soon to come from Mrs Henderson in this series. It should be noted that this and the former in this series, can easily be read as a stand-alone.

Ms. Henderson is an amazing writer, I've loved every book I've read by her so far, and this new edition does not disappoint! I love how she managed to interweave the stories of her various series, cameos are so fun. :)Anna's Heart is the second book in Ms. Henderson's Wilderness Brides Series, which started with Cora's Pride, and follows Anna and Ethan as they journey west towards Oregon. This story has humor, passion, adventure and tension, and is overall a great read.

Good. Ethan & Anna. This story did not garner my attention from the very beginning as many other books have done. I felt like I was just plodding my way through it. Ethan is holding onto hurt from losing his parents and Anna mourns her deceased fiancee. Ethan agrees to take Anna to fort Hall so that she can continue her journey to Oregon and a future she longs for. Along the way Ethan finally realizes that he loves Anna and they marry. Because of Anna's loving heart Ethan learns to live in the present. This is a good love story.

From the first it’s obvious that Peter Ford has given us an intimate portrait of the man and glossed over very little. Some of the revelations make painful reading.Peter Ford traces Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford’s beginnings in Canada and how he came to live in the U.S. and became Glenn Ford. We learn that his acting credentials were well grounded in years of performing in community and amateur productions. Peter Ford pins down the appeal that kept Glenn Ford a major star for decades.I was surprised at the issues dealt with. No son likes to hear that his father cheated on his mother, but Glenn did many times and was candid about his affairs with some of Hollywood’s most beautiful women.But there is a sad family saga here and we view it from the inside. Peter Ford’s mother was the brilliant dancer Eleanor Powell. Peter relates how his parents’ marriage was eroded by long absences and Glenn’s infidelity. It also damaged the relationship between father and son.The younger Ford also acknowledges that Glenn Ford’s movies, with exceptions such as “Gilda” and “Blackboard Jungle”, were entertaining, but not that notable. It was frustrating for his father who loved acting that there were few opportunities for truly iconic roles. He was to star with Rita Hayworth in “From Here to Eternity”, but for various reasons it didn’t happen – a fascinating thought nonetheless.Glenn was a man given to moods and not a little self-delusion. He did not avoid confrontation. There was a tough side to Glenn Ford, gutsy really. We learn how after the attack on Pearl Harbour he joined the marines just as his film career was taking off with no guarantee that it would be waiting for him if he came back. Amazingly, his association with the military eventually put him in harm’s way during the Vietnam War.Peter reveals the negative impact his father’s third marriage had on them all. Often the saddest part of a star’s story is their decline and passing. Toward the end, Glenn became dependent on others – not always with his best interests at heart.Peter Ford’s biography of his father is self-revelatory by its very nature. Life as a child of a Hollywood star is part of the story. Beautifully researched and written, no other biographer could have had the intimate access to his subject that Peter Ford enjoyed. A book that every adult son should read, in that he may better understand his father and even be a better son in-time-of-need; and, thusly be a better father himself.

I really enjoyed this book on Glenn Fords' life. While he was an actor before my time, I got to enjoy this Canadian born actors 50 year film career from streaming and seeing them on American Movie Classics. Like many actors of his time, Ford served in WWII but had a hard time returning to the screen until he took a lead in the movie Gilda with Rita Hayworth. His performance in this film noir classic brought him to the forefront of hollywood actors once again.He later served on a special forces team in the Vietnam War. In later years some of his best work was done in westerns where he became the fastest draw of all the western actors. Checkout: (The Last Challenge 1967) Fords characters are always hard working men with enough foibles to make them all believable. He was as versatile in comedy as well as serious roles and always insisted that he wasn't an actor, "I always play myself". To date I have watched 25 of Fords 109 movies.

This IS the definitive aquarium guide. Text and most photos date to the early 30's but tons of insight and information. Has been my standby since early 70's. Just replaced my original copy because nothing out there, new, compares. For those serious about learning aquarium fish be sure and get this to go with any modern publications.

Fantastic, VERY informative book that every aquarium owner ought to own a copy of. Also see a similar but equally as useful book called "Exotic Tropical Fishes". I recommend owning both. You will gain great knowledge and insight into how to properly maintain an aquarium with this book and on top of that, you will learn of many, many beautiful species of tropical fish, many of which you might not necessarily see in your local fish store.

This is the go to reference book for Aquarium owners. This book as been a point of reference since 1935., (which I have the 1st edition.)This printing was the 16th edition, 1953, and was in reasonable condition. I would recommend any edition of this series of books by Innes.

Great book on basic no frills care of aquariums and fish. You may need to experiment a little on the advice. Not all fish respond the same to various treatments and conditions. Book is "Old but not obsolete". I have given this book as a gift many times. By the way I am a Biologist specializing in Freshwater Aquatic Biology and Limnology (the study of inland waters).

I admit I bought this in no small part for the nostalgia factor. My father had this book lying around when I was a kid and I thought it was excellent reference material at the time as I learned about aquariums. So, I decided to get a copy.In that regard, it seemed easy to find "good" used copy cheaply, so I did.The book is clearly dated, but I think I'm surprised how well it holds up. The basic information about the fish is well done and accurate. I'm sure some things aren't current knowledge, but I didn't immediately spot it as I looked through my favorite fish. There was even some historical knowledge about the fish that I didn't know and was interested to learn.The pictures are also good shots and I consider the color plates like works of art. I realize at the time they were done because color wasn't easy in aquariums, but they have a certain style that I think is visually appealing and adds to the nostalgia element I mentioned. I show these color plates to my two year old boys and tell them stories about the fish.In the age of the internet, I'm not sure a general reference book like this is even needed when very good information and pictures can be found quickly with an Internet search. But, I think it's fun to have around. Who knows, maybe someday my boys will want a copy around for the same reasons I do.

Dr William T. Innes is considered to be the "father" of modern day aquarium fish keeping. He set the standard that many fish keeping guides follow. He has cataloged fishes for the aquarium by families and takes the time to distinguish differences among the families. Exotic Aquarium Fishes was published in 1935, and in general still a good source as a guide. Although some of that scientific names of fishes have changed, there are more varieties discovered and the equipment has changed, his approach to managing a successful aquarium still works. Dr. Innes also has done work in locating and breeding many varieties to be raised in an aquarium environment. One fish the Neon Tetra was named after him (Hyphessobrycon innesi). If you look inside the book, you will notice that many of the pictures for each species are drawn or painted. In 1935 photography was not moistly black and white so Dr. Innes drew many species to help describe to patterns and colors. If you plan to get a copy of his book, GET THE OLDER EDITONS THAT WERE PUBLISHED BY INNES PUBLISHING. Later other publishers have tried to expand this classic such as those by Aquariums Inc and TFH, a rival if Innes. These expanded editions ruin the quality of the guide and I'll bet if Dr. Innes was alive today he would be disappointed. There are newer and more detailed aquarium fish guides today, but if you want to read a book from the father and qualified expert of the hobby and trade, this is a wonderful book to get.

Bought it to replace my worn out orig. one I bought back in 1972-73 lots of good info. The Grand father of Aquarium books. Fun to go back and see the book that got me going with fish in the first place

It was my first book in the 60s and i patterned my research and study of desease to and from fish on and it help me more than anyone could ever know Passing on the old book 19th edition with the new 21st edition to my grandkids to make sure they can enjoy the hobby as mush as i did without leranring all the lesson the hard way.

Being a loyal fan of anything military, I look for Humor in Uniform first when each new "Readers Digest" arrives. So having a collection of these delightful anecdotes is like having struck oil in my backyard!I know there are many more where these came from and I'm fervently hoping for another volume.If I could give the book more than "5 stars" I'd do it, but I guess I'll have to settle for 5

After 33 years in the military my husband always turns to Humor in Uniform in the Readers Digest before reading anything else so when I found this compilation of the stories in book form I grabbed it up to give it to him for Christmas. Then I decided to take it with me on a lengthy plane trip and thoroughly enjoyed it as did a couple of my seat mates along the way when they saw what I was reading, and chuckling about. I think it's still in good enough shape to give it to him and plan to order one for my brother-in-law who is also retired military. There are some stories I remember so it's not all fresh but they were still fun to read again. Not just for military but it helps when you see so much that's familiar.

Disjointed. I can think of lots of things I thought were funny from my days in the military. Somehow this collection isn't as much fun.

I have always enjoyed laughing at funny situations, but the best times, as I remember them, are when similar things occur in my own life. Laughing at oneself is the best medicine for reducing a BIG head about how great we THINK we are.

Maybe just me, but when I read these anecdotes in Readers Digest, they seem funnier. Maybe it's seeing too many at one time that reduces the humor? Still, not a bad book to read after some serious reading gets you down. Always amazes me the funny things to happen or said among our heroes in uniform.

Have a child or friend going through boot camp? This is a great book to send them and help them get through the tough times.

My Dad was in the US Army for 50+ years, so I get a good laugh out of hearing other servicemen/women's funny experiences. Love this book!

If you enjoy Reader's Digest various funny columns -- then you will enjoy this book. Since I ordered all of the Reader's Digest books I don't remember if it was delivered on time from this vendor (since I was not in a rush) , but nevertheless all of the books I received were in good condition.
