I'm aware of how backwards and fearful the U.S. is when it comes to sex, but it's nice to see it all spelled out, organized, and backed with facts. Some of the facts are appalling! It's incredible how much people want to control other people's personal lives, and the lack of empathy. So many people are not just ignorant, but stupid! The author brings up some interesting points, such as our sex ed for kids approach is in order to make adults feel more comfortable, and does a great disservice to our children. The way our society is set up now will keep therapists in business for decades. This book is an important read for a sex-positive activist. I wish we could change our methods to match countries that have a successful model, but there are too many rich religious groups invested in profiting from the current set up that is preventing us from self-actualizing and being happy and healthy.
Klein spells out the assault on personal rights and democratic process here in the US via an assault on human sexuality. The key to this assault is framing the debate in terms of an "indecency" problem that requires a solution when the real problem in our society is not indecency but sexual intolerance created by an enemy who claims the problem is one of indecency. That's the proper framing of the debate, says Klein: sexual INTOLERANCE (and what to do about it). Until the debate is reframed this way, expect the assault against personal rights and democratic process in the US to continue. The enemy has no respect for either.
Marty Klein is awesome. His sexological knowledge is expansive. His ethical awareness is superb. His comments are trenchant. This is not a new and recent work, but the facts have not changed except to get worse. Unfortunately, the anti-sex forces keep making life hard for sexual freedom and sexual pleasure. Also unfortunate is the effect on young people.
It is a good book well researched. Another aspect of sexual liberation is a higher energy level, better health and often a critical attitude towards external "authorities".That may one reason why those unearned power fight sex..However, the author fails to mention that watching a lot of porn can be dangerous as it leads to desensitization and possible impotence.
I had to get this book for a Human Sexuality class I was taking in Grad school for my counseling studies and the course was given by none other than Yvonne Fulbright herself. One of the best classes I have ever taken and the book is not only good for the class but also for personal insight and discovery as well as societal issues with sexuality. Quick delivery too!!! The Abstinence Only law was written so that the program cannot be evaluated, and it requires educators to lie to teens about contraception and condoms, which they are told are ineffective, often with disastrous consequences. The program is a miserable failure, and much of the money is funneled to the politically connected. The book gives you an idea of what is wrong with purely politically motivated laws and how they waste taxpayer money.
Nicely done. The author sometimes comes across as a little high pitched or over-angry, but when you consider the kind of hysterical reactions he's arguing against, it fits into perspective.
I wasn't quite sure what I would be getting when I bought this book, but once I started reading it I was glad I had. It looks at the many ways that government, religion and individuals are waging a war on the basic rights of adults to engage in sexual activities with other adults. The book then explains that this is then made to be a threat to our children. Never in this book is kiddie porn stated to be acceptable.It explains vey well how the war on sex is hurting our children by refusing to accept the fact that they are sexual active, not giving them access to birth control and denying them a good sex-education program. At times even taking them from loving, caring parents because their parents engaged in sex acts someone did not approve of.I was not aware of the extremes that some people are going to in forcing their own personal beliefs on others in an area that is not of their business.The pain and the damage that is done in the name of the war on sex is massive and continuing to get worse, people need to know what is happening so they can work to stop it.This book is an eye opener!
