This picture history covers the story of one of California's most celebrated airlines. Pacific Southwest Airlines started as a DC-3 operator flying between its San Diego base, the LA area and Northern California. As time goes on, the fleet gets improved with DC-4s, L-188 Electras, Boeing 727s and 737s, DC-9-30s, and in a short-lived experiment, widebodied L-1011s. Starting around 1970, painted smiles began appearing on PSA's aircraft; these were well received and became the airline's trademark. PSA prospered because it was an "intra-state" airline not governed by federal CAB regulation. In the early 1970s, when "intra-state" airlines could not leave their home state's borders, a group of Texans came out to study PSA. The airline they created, Southwest, now operates many of PSA's routes. In later years, the Boeings gave way to DC-9-80s and BAe-146s, followed by an ill-advised and poorly executed merger with USAir and PSA's smile was history.
Bought this for my father, a former PSA employee. He was shocked they had a book like this on his former employer and he loved it! He even went through and found people he knew and facts he never learned. A great memento of an historic airline, awesome that someone took the time to put this together.
I was disappointed that the pictures were all B & W, but that's the style these books come in. Overall, pretty good.

As a former PSA employee I was hoping for more than a collection of photos with little in the way of caption, explanations and especially, ID's of the people in the photos.....An editing proof could have been circulated among the retired PSA'ers as to who all the people pictured were.....I recognized many faces and wondered "who was that, I just can't remember all the names".....Other than that it's an intriguing pictorial of the greatest airline there ever was.....Jim
A lot of fun reminiscences of PSABut, just same old photos etc. that were everywhere, nothing new.No good interviews of personnel that were there.
