Dear reader, I am a layman with a fair background of physics and general science education. I have been reading on Quantum Theory intensively for the last few months, that I have found this book. The author is famous with two good books on quantum theory and its implications, and this kindle single is a short essay on the main problem of wave/particle duality. I love kindle singles because every page turn gives a 1% progress of the book and hence joy! This book is an excellent example of tackling a basic problem and giving the reader every single valuable information available in the science literature. What makes this book a 5 star, is Gribbin's laying the wave/particle duality problem from the beginning till the very end (from Young's 1801 double slit experiment to the 2013 single electron double-slit diffraction experiment of the Batelaan team) with many valuable details. For example, I am thankful for the information on the development of the cathode ray tube (and the vacuum tube) and its impact on many important 19th century experiments. This is a hard to find detail and this book is the first time I found any information on the details of the experiments made by Lenard, an obscure yet key scientist who received the 1905 Nobel prize for his work on cathode rays.Bottom line: The central mystery of the quantum theory is well documented and thoroughly discussed here in this little volume. There is yet no solution, of course, to the mystery question. But this is not John Gribbin's fault!
This is a very well written essay and should be a good read for all readers regardless of their degree of preparedness. The author starts with what Richard Feynman, Nobel prize winner, called a central mystery in quantum physics - the double slit experiment that "is impossible, absolutely impossible to explain."Then the author goes on goes on to describe chronologically the important quantum mechanics developments and discoveries. In chapter six, while describing the Schrodinger's cat paradox the Author introduces the concept if the Many Worlds Interpretations (MWI). Here I was surprised by his statement:"This does not, as is often mistakenly suggested, implying that at the moment of truth the universe splits into two, one with a dead cat and one with a live cat. The idea is that there always were two universes, in one of which the cat died while in the other it lived. Here is no collapse and no splitting..."Other books I read were actually saying splitting. Wikipedia, on the other hand, says, there are numerous variations of the original Everett's proposal of WMI. Everett, who first introduced the idea of MWI, talked about universe branching, and, clearly, this is not the same as splitting. In any case, this is not an important point. In the last chapter the author describes "the most beautiful experiment in Physics" first visualized, by Richard Feynmann in1965 who doubted it would be ever practical to carry out. It was carried out for the first time in 1974 by an Italian team. This is the double slit experiment (DSE) with firing particles one at a time. The essay ends rather abruptly without discussing the expected but classically unexplainable result of the DSE. While MWI based explanation is similar to Schrodinger's cat paradox discussed in the essay, it is not obvious. Yes, when firing electrons one at a time towards the two slits, each electron goes through slit A in our universe, and through slit B in the other. So how does the interference pattern arise in our universe? The two electrons (one in our universe exiting slit A, and the other exiting slit B in the other universe) interact with each other, and, when many such pairs will go through the two slits, we'll see the interference pattern.
Very lucid and detailed explanation of the two slits experiment, the history of its permutations and its reason-defying ramifications.I've read many accounts of this famous experiment; this was the most helpful.Bill
I am not a physicist, theoretical or otherwise. But this paper presents such a mysterious puzzle that everyone should take the time to read it. Ultimately it demonstrates just how little we understand the unifying principles that manage our universe. The answer must lie in extra-dimensional thought. Sub-light speed particles behaving as though they were beyond the limits of time's passage. Crazy in the most beautiful way.
Gribbin examines in some depth the famous double-slit experiment, and describes the results of recent experiments of the same type. If you want a quick overview of the underlying mysteries of quantum physics, this is an easy read that gets right to the point and stays with it.
Fast-paced, exciting account of the fundamental mystery of quantum mechanics, short, sweet and accessible. Good grief dose for the curious.
John Gribbin is a just a great writer when it comes to physics and astrology. He explains concepts well with good historical background. I would recommend for anyone interested in quantum physics.
Do we know anything? Science is philosophic way of thinking but it doesn't always explain everything we see. So if the hard sciences cannot explain the behavior of light or matter why are we so convinced that evolution explains our existance. We no longer go to school to learn how to use our minds we go to school to be indoctrinated
